  1. Jack Teagarden is great too! Didn't even think of him 'till I read your post Quincy!
  2. Sarah Vaughan Ella Fitzgerald Louis Armstrong So that's if I were to only pick 3, and they are my favorites, and those who I like to listen to. Historically, Billie Holiday needs to be on the list. Anita O'Day needs to be on the list. And maybe Joe Williams. Love Frank Sinatra too, but wouldn't consider him a true Jazz singer.
  3. I didn't get the email either???? I mean I have the set, but I like to be up to date on what's happening at Mosaic. Highly recommended set, vastly improved fidelity and a GREAT booklet.
  4. Tonight I am listening to: The Complete Roulette Studio Recordings of Count Basie Disk 6, "9:20 Special". Beautiful band, and this set sounds great! I wonder if the original master tapes would sound better remastered today than when this set came out (1993-94)? I think they hit a home run. This is one of the sets that I wish Mosaic or someone, would bring back in print (I know Mosaics are limited) but this music needs to be heard, and the newer remasters aren't quite as good. Just got the new Allison Krauss & Union Station recording and it's nice reflective music too, big thumbs up for sound quality, musicianship and songwriting.
  5. Cool article! There are some really nice sounding recordings made at Fine Sound. Thanks.
  6. I have the Sennheiser HD700's on pre-order. I'll post a short review when I get them in!
  7. It looks like there is a copy on eBay for around $350 buy it now. The sound compared to other Mosaic sets is warmer and more liquid. Not too much on the high end, say compared to the Basie Roulette recordings, which I think is crisp and accurate. To answer your question about reverb, it's much better than other commerical releases of this material. One recording of the Jones/Lewis band with Joe Williams comes to mind, and the Mosaic set is superior in all aspects. Sessions A, B, C, and E are my favorites from the discography.
  8. Personally, the Mosaic set is great, but I don't listen to it that much. The booklet is invaluable, tons of detail on how the band was formed, personnel, cool pictures. But if you were really wanting the set, I would say that the Vanguard record is the best of the lot and really captures the band in peak form playing the best of the charts. Just my humble opinion. The sound quality on the set is warm and detailed. Very LP like, without the original post-production flaws.
  9. I've got Sennheiser HD 518's and they are fine (a good friend works as a sales rep for them...and I got 'em pretty cheap) they started sounding really good once they were broken in. I play them via my headphone input in my Yamaha amplifier. But they work fine plugged into my iPhone. I am looking into getting some Grado headphones in the future from what people have said on this board and a friend who has a pair. Cool thread!!! I love listening to my stereo system, but listening to music (good "audiophile" recordings for example) with headphones can really bring out detail that is otherwise unheard.
  10. Totally agree about how long it takes to find a repair guy that "gets it". Or rather understands how to set your horn up to your specifications or how to bring the best out of a horn. I live in the Minneapolis area and usually take a 3.5 hr. drive down to see Randy Jones (Tenormadness). I've bought a ton of horns from him and had all of my saxes and clarinets overhauled from him. He's a good friend now, but again, he may not work for everyone. I love how he makes my horns feel, great key action, height, spring tension, etc. I've heard good things about Eric Drake.
  11. I have one for sale. Send a PM I have one for sale.Send a PM Sent PM. Thanks!
  12. The Complete Blue Note Fifties Sessions of Lee Morgan Disk 4. MAN OH MAN! I am kinda tempted to get the XRCD version of "Candy" just for comparison. But I am pleased with the sound quality on the Mosaic set.
  13. I am sure Mosaic did a GREAT job on the Vee Jay's! The quest continues....
  14. No luck so far on this forum. But I did find one on eBay for $299 starting bid. Not sure if I want to bite at that price...
  15. Hi All, I am looking to purchase a copy of The Complete Vee Jay Lee Morgan Wayne Shorter Mosaic box set. Hopefully there is someone out there that would like to sell, because I missed out on this set and the Chambers/Kelly Vee Jay set when they were available. Only complete sets with booklet, box, etc. I would prefer to pay via Paypal. Please PM me if you have one for sale!!!! THANKS.
  16. Maybe JJ played in front of the band, facing the band, and directed with his trombone? I forget if there were any session photos in the liner notes. I always liked this CD, but now that you say it, I do think a more agressive rhythm section would have inspired the guys a little more. And would have complimented the arrangements better.
  17. I got the Jacquet/Webster and The Jones Brothers CD's never heard either on CD or LP! Maybe I should sell my Louie Bellson Verve Elite! I never listen to it... Thanks!
  18. Of those you listed I have 'em all but the Armstrong. The Armstrong will be around for a while. The Rich is running low, I love the session with Sweets and Sonny Criss (brilliant playing), there is a cool session with Basie sidemen and Ben Webster that is cool and a small big band session that SWINGS! I really do not like the CD with flute and vibes, very annoying timbre to my ears.. Overall I play this set quite often. The Benny Goodman set is really good as well, but has a ton of alternate tracks....the bands always sound good and Benny is a god on clarinet. The Oliver Nelson set, to me, is interesting---I don't play it that much. I bought it because of the top notch sidemen in the bands, sound quality is superb. There are some good Phil Woods moments, and I like the Jimmy Smith sessions. Oh, the Cohn/Newman/Green set is SO hip. That music never gets old!!!! You can't go wrong with ANY of those sets on your list, but because the Rich is closest to being OOP, I would suggest it. There is a lot of great music in the set, and Buddy is fantastic. Just my two cents!
  19. Well said I've never heard the sax section compared to Swiss clockwork, but it's SO true!!! I play in a band that performs original Lunceford charts, and the saxophone solis are incredibly intricate and difficult! But they sound so natural and flowing on the recordings.
  20. It would be wonderful if Mosaic had more planned! Listening to The Buck Clayton Jam Sessions box set, not in order, but a song here a song there. About the only recording that I know of that Charlie Fowlkes soloed on! Other than a Frank Wess date in the late 50s.
  21. I'll probably put the Hampton on my order along with the delayed Hawkins box set. Paying $4 on shipping for 1 CD just pisses me off....but I digress.
  22. Complete 1936-1940 Ellington Small Groups, great stuff Don't know why, but I've listed to "Night Song" 10 times in a row, just something about Cootie muted trumpet foiled by the reeds. Perfect tempo, kinda bittersweet song. I know this was a pop tune back in the day (or at least covered by several different bands) so some research is needed...
  23. I think a fair comparison is that of Oliver Nelson's 60s Big Band, I think Nelson arranged some of the charts as well as J.J.
  24. You'll love the Cosmic Scene too, Paul Gonsalves is amazing on Body and Soul, the double time section is amazing. This record was done at the 30th St. Columbia studio, so the sound quality is great. Clark Terry and Jimmy Hamilton sound very nice here too. Not to mention the rhythm section I have not gotten the Slide Hampton CD yet. Let us know when you get your shipment and your review!
