  1. Anybody get their copy yet?!?!?! UPS says Thursday (5/31) for me. I'll post my first impressions then.
  2. I usually try to listen to each CD in order. But I will be skipping right to the 1946 Metronome All Stars session.
  3. I just got the email message this afternoon. Scott said mine will ship tomorrow. Maybe those in New England and parts of the East Coast will get their shipment tomorrow. I know in Minneapolis, it takes about 3 business days to get from Mosaic to my doorstep. Next week for me...
  4. Just got off the phone with Mosaic's Scott, and he said that he's spinning disk 3, "so far, so good!" I had to update my card info with them as it expired during the interim of the Hawkins box delays... Mine will be shipping out tomorrow. I can't wait! If anyone wants to post first impressions, have at it!
  5. I remember Johnny Hodges wasn't regarded as a reader. Barney Bigard and Russell Procope helped him out with this problem.
  6. Scott Wenzel told me the Webb/Fitzgerald won't be released until late 2012. Is Mosaic still not charging for pre-orders until they actually ship? I know they didn't in the past, but when their financials are not as strong as they may have once been, that would be a way to maintain some cash flow. They still don't charge your credit card until the order ships, but orders that use PayPal as payment option are charged when they are placed - as is always the case when PayPal is used. Totally agree. Though, I always get excited when I see the money go out of my account, because then a Mosaic is on the way!!!! Looking forward to getting this set.
  7. I have had this on pre-order since they announced the set... obviously it's a relief knowing that this set will be produced. I know Mosaic has worked on this for a long time, and it should be amazing. I can't wait to hear the Esquire sessions!!!! Dang, that's cold! But, you've decided for me. Cognac it is. I readily admit to enjoying cognac, but knowing very little about it. Any suggestions for a mid-price selection? (Is there such a thing as budget cognac?) Unfortunately, probably the best time I'll have to listen to the set (house to myself for a couple of hours, usually) is mid to late morning — 9 to noon. Cognac might not be the best choice as result. Well, I do have some tasty new Gen Mai Cha green tea. Tell me that Bean liked to sip green tea before gigs! In anticipation of this set, I sold a number of my Hawkins discs. (Not all!) I've been jones-ing for a while. But I can wait it out ... :eye: I think I will be enjoying a nice Laphroiag quarter cask or cask strength scotch for this release!
  8. With all due respect, I think what you're REALLY hearing is the sound, not the music. Of course, there's nothing wrong with that, but bear in mind that the music experience is always there, regardless of the advanced (and in some cases questionable) sound reproduction. I am hearing more of the sound, certainly. Isn't that the point of SACD? I much prefer these new SACD's, the original Vinyl, APO Vinyl, XRCD, over the RVG CD's, I think MOST of the RVG's are very compressed and they don't do justice to the original recordings. I think most would agree. I am for the music first in any format, but when the recording makes a saxophone sound like it has a pillow stuffed in it's bell, it's not very enjoyable especially if there is a better alternative out there. Bottom line, the instruments and voices sound much more realistic, and in part, make the music more believable. I totally respect your viewpoint, but at this point, for me, I think I've found a good direction to go. Certainly, just because it is SACD or other "high resolution" formats does not guarantee good sound, there are many CD's that sound great. But the original recording must be good as well as mastering/remastering. There are many CD's from the 80s and 90s that sound good, and I listen to quite a bit. But this whole SACD thing has been a recent development in my life that I have been enjoying!
  9. Over the past months I have purchased an SACD player, and have been REALLY enjoying "hearing" music again. Anyways, I've purchased quite a few of the Analogue Productions SACD's mastered by Kevin Grey and Steve Hoffman. They have been ASTONISHING! If you have an SACD player and don't have any of these, go out and get them! Even the CD layer is a big improvement over the Rudy Van Gelder series. They also have a bunch of late 50s- early 60s Capitol Nat King Cole recordings that are VERY realistic! Just a heads up!
  10. Will it beat the Hawkins set out?! gregmo That's the million dollar question!!! HAHA. At this point with all the delays, anything's possible. Sure can't wait until I am putting disk 1 of the Coleman Hakins set into my cd player!
  11. Glad to hear you got a copy after searching around for a while! Nothing like having the real deal Mosaic!
  12. I'm jealous. Mine is still mid-Atlantic stuck in the damn mail ! Maybe I will get an Easter present delivery? A very early morning spin of Tal Farlow, CD5. Nice ! You will love the Lester set when it finally arrives!!! Wonderful booklet too! I haven't listened to Mosaic sets lately. Bought a bunch of the Analogue Productions SACD Blue Note recordings and am really diggin' the sonics!!! But gotta love Mosaic Box Sets! Can't wait for the Coleman Hawkins. Ok....I did listen to a little of the Count Basie Roulette Studio Recordings set...Paseo Promenade and Blue Five Jive from the Kansas City Suite.
  13. I've got the Buddy Rich and Onzy Matthews and they are enjoyable, but not essential, IMHO. I really dig the sessions with Sweets Edison and Sonny Criss and the tribute to Basie.
  14. Love the shelving for the box sets!!! Quick question: where did you get the plastic covers for the Mosaic sets? I need to get some! Thanks.
  15. Streaming now!!! I will have to buy this. One of the last performances from Johnny Hodges before his death, and he sounds great!!! Love RAB!!!!!!!!!! Sounds like Wild Bill Davis is with them too.
  16. You should get it (IMHO), the material has never sounded this good and the booklet is GREAT. The organ is off putting, I agree, but Lester sounded great on that session. There are outtakes, but they only add (for me), as I love Lester. I would not hesitate getting this if you are: a Count Basie Orchestra fan, a Prez fan, pre-WWI jazz fan. I listen to this set often. Pre-WWI? Whoops Pre-WWII, that's what I get for posting at work. lol.

  18. WTF? I hope this set WILL be released and not fade away.... Good thing I have been bingeing on some Analogue Productions Blue Note SACD's and the Nat King Cole SACD's.... But still....I remember the original release date was November now it's June? WTF, Scott assured me they WILL get the clearances necessary to release it! With the major labels having skimmed most of their staff more than a few years ago, it just takes more time. OK? Thanks for the info regarding the release. I'm not mad at anybody, you (Jetman, J.A.W.) or Scott, etc. I'm just a little frustrated, and in the back of my mind---perhaps illogically, wondering if this set will ever come out. I have mine pre-ordered, and am TRYING to be patient, but the constant delays have be disheartening. I was Mosaic to be ok, and the recording industry to be ok...perhaps a pipe dream nowadays.
  19. How about the Felsted recordings? Wasn't this on the "Upcoming Releases" page a few years ago?

  21. That is one of my favorite tracks in that set!!! I love it, so much energy. Woody really plays well and it sounds like he relished the opportunity to sit in.
