Yep! The samples on the NPR site sound great! I can't wait to see that shipping notification in my email inbox (and more importantly the box set in my hands!).

Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?
golfcrazy1984 replied to Soulstation1's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Listening to The Complete Verve Roy Eldridge Recordings. It's been some time since I've listened to this set, but man, Roy is amazing. And the remastering is great. -
Mosaic's End of July Promotion

I LOVE Sarah Vaughan, and I listen to the set quite often (usually via iPhone tune shuffling)... I really like the Sarah+2, just great intimate music. Remastering is top notch. The Sarah Vaughan and Basie session has been improved over the mid-90s Verve release. With that said, it's a LOT of Sassy! -
Didn't the Chick Webb/Ella Fitzgerald set take priority? And the now scheduled Mingus?
-
I put in a pre-order. Really looking forward to hearing what Malcolm Addey does with this music I may be out of the loop, but I didn't know this release was scheduled at Mosaic. Kinda seemed like it came out of the blue....not that I'm complaining.

School Bus Monitor Harassment
golfcrazy1984 replied to Dave James's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Things ain't the way they used to be. I wish big bands were still popular and in demand. Even if there was a public demand for big band music, I doubt you could find musicians with enough tone, originality and soul as those in Basie's band or Ellingtons, Hermans, etc. Anyways, this bus monitor harassment breaks my heart. I read the article, and it brought a tear to my eye. "How could kids treat this old lady so poorly...?" But I remember I was a little troublemaker back then, and could probably see myself teasing someone---especially one who wouldn't stand up to it. Live and learn. Hopefully these kids get a big punishment from their parents. -
How many do you own?
golfcrazy1984 replied to Bright Moments's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
52 boxed sets and 8 selects. I think I have what I want now, and will pick and choose from the current and future releases. -
I agree that his playing was more inspired and less derivitave in the 50s and 60s. He branched out from his be-bop roots, with the European Rhythm Machine though. I wonder when he started wearing the hat, and why?

Yes, lot's of Phil Woods haters here. I'm not one. Everyone's allowed an opinion. All I know, is that Benny Carter thought that Phil was one of the best----that comment coming from one of the best. I think he said something like, "when Adolphe Sax invented the sax, he must have had Phil Woods in mind"...or maybe, could never have thought that someone like Phil would come along. I think, he has, for the last 20 years---or as some have said the last 50 years, kinda done the same thing. But, hey, he got to that LEVEL. He certainly crafted his voice on the alto. Anyways, Gene Quill, IMHO, was a great altoist---who had his own sound. Great player. I was just listening to a Jimmy Rushing Roulette recording with a great NY big band (1963?) and Gene and Phil are playing altos. They both have solos, in fact I think Gene may be playing lead on this recording. Added an "e" to Adolph(e) Sax.

Just received my Sennheiser HD 700 today!!! So far so good. Listened to the MFSL "Blues in Orbit" and selections from the Mosaic "Complete Roulette Studio Recordings of Count Basie" set. Very good sound reproduction. I am coming from the Sennheiser HD 518 and the HX-200 II (at work)---so this is certainly a step up. There have been a lot of people ripping the HD 700 on a certain headphone forum, and I don't get it. These headphones are natural, open and beautiful. I am certainly not a headphone audiophile, but I am LOVING these! So, the jazz was great, but listening to the Living Stereo SACD's, one is transported to symphony hall! Truly spectacular!!! I just wish I could take these to work (in a land of cubicles), but I am sure it would annoy my co-workers. So the quick review: I am pleased, $999 pleased? Not sure about that. All I know, is I've got a lot of listening to do!!! I will try and put together a full and balanced review in the future.

The album with Cannonball is a studio album with a "live" audience. It's a loose and fun recording. Joe sounds great, as does the rest of the band. I think, Cannons working band at the time. Cannonball is on FIRE. I listen to it from time to time.

I'd say between $500 and $750.

That's right, they won't reissue entire sets (hence the first vinyl-only Hodges set will never come out on CD, dammit), but there are duplications of individual tracks and sessions all over the place. I hope you're mistaken about there being no Henderson set, unless the bulk of it would be a repeat of the Hawkins set, in which case I really don't mind. Thanks for checking. That's the session I'm most apprehensive about. It's a stellar band (although I never thought Sinatra quite fitted in), but they only play two songs, repeatedly, which could be quite taxing. Are the solos sufficiently varied from take to take? IMHO, the solos vary slightly, with Hodges and Shavers having the most variance. For me I like hearing the subtle differences from track to track, but I can totally understand how 5 or 6 takes of a song can be irritating. Lawrence Brown and Harry Carney are virtually note for note, and Hawkins just has this background riff that he plays. Buddy Rich's breaks are SO good though! The snare sound is VERY lifelike. That session has great sound quality. Nat, Frank and June sound marvelous.

I listened to disk 8 last night and I too (as crisp stated before), was taken aback by the vitality and energy of the bands and Coleman too. The session that I listened to several times was the Metronome All-Stars session: (EEE) METRONOME ALL STAR BAND: Charlie Shavers (tp), Lawrence Brown (tb), Johnny Hodges (as), Coleman Hawkins (ts), Harry Carney (bari), Nat “King” Cole (p, vcl), Bob Ahern (g), Eddie Safranski (b), Buddy Rich (d), Frank Sinatra, June Christy (vcl), Sy Oliver (arr). NYC, December 15, 1946 REALLY good quality sound. Charlie Shavers in his solos are virtuostic. Hodges is perfect and this is some of the best Lawrence Brown I've heard. It's interesting to hear a younger Sinatra. Anyways looking forward to checking the rest of the set out, but this session was 1st priority for me. Thanks Hans for checking on the possible Henderson set, let us know what you hear!

That may be so, but fact is that they abandoned a Henderson set when they decided to go ahead with the Hawkins box. I have no idea whether they will reconsider or not, but if they do, it won't be any time soon. The Hampton-led material may also be in the Chu Berry set...not sure, don't have the info at hand. I know they've duplicated some tracks in the past.

I think Bob is a killer saxophonist and composer. I love his playing, but really could never get into his compositions.

Ok....I'm glad everyone is receiving their copies, and everyone is getting a (relatively) low numbered set. But has anyone listened to it? Good or bad? Sound quality? Impressions? Mine is coming in tomorrow, but I have a gig at night, so not sure if the UPS man will get to my house before I have to leave.... At least I know I'll be listening to it all day Friday!
