  1. Am putting together an arrangement of the tune 'Teo' as played on Miles Davis' album Someday My Prince Will Come. The piece has four different sections, that each outline a mode. I'm pretty happy with everything I've notated, except I'm having some trouble pinning down the first mode being used. It's an F minor-type, and I assumed it to be the Dorian (second mode of Eb). Coltrane's solo seems to be outlining the Dorian (with an Eb in the scale). However, I'm sure I occasionally hear Wynton Kelly playing an E in the chord, suggesting an F min/maj7 and an ascending melodic minor scale. Is this part of the structure or an alteration that Kelly is making on the fly? I've been listening to it for so long now I don't know what I'm hearing anymore! Have never seen any transcriptions of this tune and a reasonably thorough Googling brings up nothing helpful. Anyone have a definitive answer?
  2. Lionel Hampton says: Brush my teeth after every meal?
  3. Hipp is just Hip "J" is like "Y" in "Yes", the "u" is the same sound as in "cool" but short (that's what the double "t" means) (nothing special about the "tta" like in "odetta" i guess) Excellent explanation, Niko, thank you. And not quite as obvious as I thought...
  4. HMV are listing a DVD on the equally shady Jazz VIP label http://hmv.com/hmvweb/displayProductDetail...&sku=292299

  6. IMO, the few sessions he did with larger groups tend to be less satisfying. Bill was often surprisingly diffident behind horn players (the Miles group notwithstanding)
  7. I'm looking forward to the remix album with guest appearances by Kanye and the Black Eyed Peas.
  8. Capital (EMI) I think.IIRC they discovered they had an old contract with Hendrix for one record and he gave them this to fulfill it. Was it the last record released in his lifetime? Re contract: correct. He signed it when he backed Lonnie Youngblood. Re last record: also correct. Hendrix signed a crooked, unread $1 contract with Ed Chalpin.
  9. The final three tracks were from the album Jazz at the Plaza (along with a version of If I Were A Bell), which I always thought was an unnecessary duplication- Plaza always seemed to be readily available. The most recent remastering is on the Miles/ Trane Columbia box. Never the greatest recordings but full of atmosphere. The studio session is some of my favourite Miles.
  10. Now that I take a closer look at the track listing, the Birdland set looks like a bit of a botch job... So, this set includes (yet again) the February 9 session which has already turned up on countless other boots and was officially issued by Pablo on their European Tours box, where it's mistakenly attributed to Hamburg, November 25, 1962. However, it doesn't include the Birdland session of June 2, 1962, so not the 'Complete' 1962 Birdland stuff at all... unless they mean the complete 'with Dolphy' as Eric isn't on the June session. These Andorrans get cunning with their descriptions of things. I suspect there are more 'Unreleased recordings' in the pipeline (the 1963 Birdland sessions will surely follow).
  11. Yeah, whatever became of him...?
  12. The Birdland session of February 9, 1962 was issued in the European tours set, credited to Hamburg November 25, 1962
  13. Both the Birdland recordings and the Milan concert have been on you-know-where, probably in the last 18 months.
  14. So the extra tracks on We Want Miles are from the Japanese Miles! Miles! Miles!... why not just include that album?
  15. I may have imagineered this, but I seem to recall seeing a gig on TV of Cherry and a bunch of other trumpet players with Sarah Vaughan. (What is the collective noun for trumpet players?)
  16. Finally, being a jazz musician pays off.
  17. Agartha/Pangaea seem to be still in print. Are the ones in the box the Japanese Mastersound versions (which are several minutes longer)?
  18. It's a beaut. The following night was pretty good too (even if Corea's Rhodes seems to be weirdly out of tune). Now, that would make a good 2CD set.
  19. What of the tracks that were issued on the boxed sets but not included on the individual albums? Not that I'm going to be parted with a couple of hundred quid for three unissued tracks and a DVD.
  20. Pretty much my reaction when I saw the Sly set (with Stand, which I already have three times, thanks). I will pick it up eventually, though.
  21. Kind of creepy? Outside of mimes, I can't think of anything creepier. Come to think of it, they even top mimes. If Guantanamo Bay was full of clowns, I'd have supported George Bush 100%, no matter what else he came up with. Would you have to waterboard them with bucketfuls of confetti?
  22. Probably completely obvious, but you never know.... Jutta Hipp?
  23. Now there would be a public phone poll to see which of the three astronauts would be 'voted off'.
