The Danny Moss CDs mentioned - "Weaver Of Dreams" and "Keeper Of The Flame" are both good ones. Here are some other worthy CDs by Danny Moss as leader: Steamers - Nagel Heyer Steam Power - Nagel Heyer At Bob Barnard's Jazz Party 1999 - Nif Nuf Returns To Bob Barnard's Jazz Party 2000 - Nif Nuf Swings Again At Bob Barnard's Jazz Party 2003 - Nif Nuf

Received this one in the mail yesterday. Sam Yahel on organ and Paul Wetico on drums join Larry Coryell on this brand new Chesky session. This trio blends together perfectly. Both Coryell and Yahel play top quality solos, and the tunes are first rate as well.

CBBB and Sahib Shihab Motherlode From Rearward
Peter Friedman replied to sidewinder's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Also, Johnny Griffin's Griff 'n' Bags is available and Lady Heavy Bottom's Waltz is forthcoming (though there is a huge amount of duplication between those 2 titles). There is also a lot of duplication on the Shihab title with what was previously issued on CD as "And All Those Cats" on Rearward 102 -
You're the piano man, Peter. I like all of those Riverside trio albums you mentioned. What don't you like about the Prestige ones? MG MG, Haven't heard them in quite some time. But as I didn't think much of them when I first acquired them, I disposed of them. My recollection, though admittedly a bit vague, is that they were attempting to "cash in" on the popularity Timmons gained via his" jazz hits" with Cannonball. They seemed to lack a coherent trio feeling and had a sort of less than "authentic" feeling to them. By contrast, the Riversides had strong rhythm sections and , to my taste, swung more and with a greater sense of unity. Now, it is possible that if I heard them again today, my opinion might be different.

The booklet indicates the concert was held in the Jubilee Auditorium.

Not sure if there has been a thread on this CD? It is a previously unissued quartet session that features Desmond with Ed Bickert, Don Thompson, and Jerry Fuller. Some may resist because it is on the Gambit label. The music is, in my view outstanding. Desmond plays beautifully, and the 3 Canadians are also excellent. To top things off, the audio quality if first class. This CD gets my strongest recommendation. Those who are fans of Paul Desmond won't want to be without it.

"This Here' is a nice session, but is not one of my favorite Timmons albums. The one's I like best are, with one exception, on Riverside. In Person Easy Does It Born To Be Blue Sweet And Soulful Sounds Soul Time (with Blue Mitchell) I don't care much for most of Timmons Prestige albums. However that one exception I referred to above is "The Soul Man" which happens to be on Prestige. This one also includes some of my favorite playing by Wayne Shorter and Ron Carter.

Rolf Ericson and his American All Stars (EmArcy)

Also check out this CD on the Swedish Dragon label. Rolf Ericson & The American Stars 1956 -
There is a very nice Charlie Rouse CD on Landmark titled "Epistrophy". It was recorded at a Thelonious Monk Birthday Tribute concert in 1988 , only 7 weeks before Rouse died of Lung cancer. Listening to this recording, I am unable to detect any evidence that Rouse was so ill. Don Cherry plays on 2 tracks, George Cables plays great piano on 6 tracks and Jessica Williams is on 1 track. Buddy Montgomery plays vibes on 3 tracks, and the rhythm section includes Jeff Chambers on bass, and Ralph Penland on drums. I find this to be a most interesting and enjoyable recording.

David Newman & Clifford Jordan - Blue Head
Peter Friedman replied to The Magnificent Goldberg's topic in Re-issues
Blue Head, Fire, and Head's Up are all damn fine David "Fathead" Newman CDs. Thankfully I have all 3 and got them when they were first available. -
$3.98 was the norm, IIRC. Maybe $4.98 for stereo. Or maybe at one (earlier) point, a dollar less both ways. I bought my first LP in 1968, and that's what prices were then. I began buying LPs in the mid-50's when they first came out. The prices were what Jim said above. In the 60's one could find LP cutouts for $1.69 to $2.50 each. I recall going to a discount dept. store in Detroit in about 1964 and buying a large number of EmArcy LP cutouts for $1.69 each. Another time I went to an electronics store and found a bunch of original Blue Note LPs for $2.00 each. Typically on a saturday I would make the rounds of a number of discount stores and invariably come home with anywhere from 2 to 8 LPs I had bought at bargain prices.

In my view, you are not likely to go wrong with any of Braff's recordings. He was a highly consistent player. His Arbors and Concord recordings are all very good. The things on Vanguard are also terrific. I also agree that his Sackville date with Ed Bickert is excellent. Braff has been one of my favorite trumpet (actually cornet) players for many years. He was overlooked by many listeners who tended to focus on the bop and hard bop trumpet players while ignoring Ruby's outstanding contributions.

Album of the Week : Don Sleet "All Members"
Peter Friedman replied to michel1969's topic in Album Of The Week
A really fine session. Purchased the LP when it was first issued, and now am extremely happy to have a CD copy. Has there ever been a thread that focuses on the one and only album by a leader that turned out to be very very good? This one certainly is a prime example. -

Yes, this is a fine recording. It sounds even better on an SACD player. -
Jimmy Giuffre made some important contributions to jazz. He will be missed. R.I.P. Jimmy

Yusef Lateef
Peter Friedman replied to Mark Stryker's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
I recall the mid 1950's and early '60's when I was living in Detroit. Saw Yusef Lateef live countless times. Always loved his big bold blues based tenor sax playing most of all. It was personally disappointing for me when he eventually moved into a heavily muti-ethnic style of music. To my ears jazz lost one of the outstanding jazz players. -
Happy Birthday to one of the survivors of the jazz life. A marvelous tenor player. Thankfully I had the opportunity to see him play live a few times. They were memorable occasions.

Lightnin' Hopkins has been one of my favorite blues singers/guitar players for about 45 years. Had many of his LPs and now have quite a few CDs by him.
-
Other than "And All Those Cats", the other CD I have by Sahib Shihab is "Jazz Sahib" in Savoy. It features Sahib, Phil Woods, Benny Golson, and two different rhythm sections.

Just listened to this CD. My copy does not have the alternate takes. Lateef plays on every track. Lee Morgan is on Accident, Darryl's Minor, Be Back Ta-Reckla Wilbur Harden is on Judyful and New Date. It sure does not sound like Morgan on Judyful. The trumpet playing on that track sounds very much style wise like the playing on New Date. The crisp articulation and half valve bits that Morgan plays on Accident,Darryl's Minor, and Be Back Ta-Reckla are absent on Judyful.
