  1. A memorable evening Gheorghe and a great photo!
  2. RIP. Great player, first heard him on Charles Fox BBC radio jazz in Britain live sessions in the 70s and was then surprised that he turned up on a Pop Group b side snappily entitled ‘Amnesty International Report on British Army Torture of Irish Prisoners”. Actually I think Tristan lets rip on the A side, we are all prostitutes from about 2 minutes in. Would be interested to know how he fell in with this crowd, what a life. RIP.
  3. Interesting. In the Uk the no wave thing wasn’t that popular so Blood Ulmer was marketed by Rough Trade as punk funk, slotting in with other UK bands of the time like A Certain Ratio, Pigbag, Pop Group, Rip Rig and Panic. Powerful record and a great picture sleeve on the Rough Trade single. Which I would post but I can’t seem to get round the size restrictions on this site.
  4. Rough Trade in the UK released James Blood Ulmer’s ‘Are you glad to be in America’ on 7” in 1980. 7” releases on RT had been of a punky persuasion prior to that so this release was v progressive. Was very trendy at the time, I recall. Anthony London
  5. Tempted too, haven’t ordered from Jazz Messengers for a long time, any post Brexit complications you are aware of?
  6. Yes those mono switches can be useful! Dug it off the rack, ‘Word’ sounds incredibly modern for 1956.
  7. Great record. Must dig out my CDcopy. How is the pressing? I have a few Atlantic black labels, including the Teddy Charles Tentet and found them powerful but noisy, even those that look good and have been through a cleaner. Anthony Yes, they used to have regular trips to the States to stock the shop. More recently, well last year, the Kings Cross shop was selling LPs from one of the owner’s collection. Some choice items. I wonder if True Blue was from this collection.
  8. What a shame. Still remember first draft Anchor at Vesuvio’s SF in the 80s after visiting City Lights. Was a good flavourful beer then, when there weren’t many around. Sam Adams or Rolling Rock were the only other ones I recall worth drinking at that time.
  9. I find modern vinyl reissues with a few exceptions to be a waste of good money. I have 70 year old 10” records that sound better than some of the latest remastered reissues .
  10. Tardo Hammer with Nat Steele and Steve Brown tonight at the Parrakeet NW5 (daft name, should have stuck with the original Victorian name the Oxford Tavern). Anthony
  11. Tour de France, absolutely enthralling this year. Yesterday and todays stages full of drama.
  12. I bought that in the ‘80s, still sounding good, probably better than any originals. It’s a great compilation, well mastered.
  13. Sounds good. Fred ‘Thelonious’ Baker? Sounds wonderful, hope the weather held out. Alan Barnes is always good value.
  14. Beautiful album (and sleeve). I have this in a few editions but pleased to have an original 10” copy which has a powerful sound to it.
  15. So exciting! Note Elmo didn’t hang around….
  16. Great book, got me excited about jazz when I was 18, along with my Dad’s jazz book club edition of Ross Russell’s Parker the legend. Unreliable (the nutmeg recipe didn’t work) but an exciting read as a youngster. Sorry, meant Robert Reisner’s Bird book.
  17. I have that. If I recall, that issue doesn’t replicate any US Pacific Jazz compilations and includes some rare tracks. Possibly the Teddy Edwards off the top of my head. Wow. Was that the Gerrard St place? Am I right in thinking it was unlicensed? With a milk dispensing machine?
  18. Giuffre is massively underrated isn’t he? Those charts and then free fall? He is a genius, I love him. Bright moon, for example.
  19. That’s it. Beautiful. Thank you. RIP Steve Schwartz and Jimmy. As a failing sax player, it was comforting to know it took 18 takes to nail the end of four brothers. As an aside, and as a non American, Giuffre’s accent is intriguing. Is that Texan mixed with California and New England? Anthony
  20. The late Steve Schwartz, a great Boston jazz DJ, did a very good long interview with Giuffre not long before Giuffre died It covered his whole career. From recollection, his wife was also involved. Steve very kindly sent me a cassette copy of the programme. I have it somewhere. I am sure the unedited tapes if they exist would be very useful if anyone were to write a biography. I would love to read one. Anthony London
  21. “Completing the program is ‘Niger River’ by Albert Ayler”. Not aware of this, would that be ‘Deep River’ maybe?
  22. Yes, I should have said, Why? Am guessing Amancio’s son has licensed the reissue. Anthony
  23. Trunk records are advertising a vinyl reissue of Hum Dono. No info on source. Hmmm (Dono). Anthony
  24. What a night! Solid performance from City, Inter fouling throughout then suddenly discovering how to play football after going one goal down. Watching in Madrid, free to view here, avoiding Real Madrid fans!
  25. Presenting Ronnie Scott sextet, Fontana reissue. Wanted records, Bristol. Nice shop, lots of jazz. No bargains but reasonable.
