I bought Common's Be on my son's recommendation. I don't get it either. I like good Hip Hop, but I don't understand what the big deal is about Common.

Maybe it is because only one deserves to survive?

Yeah, and the Prius is one of the lame things about Toyota. Sorry John that you made that assumption about the iPod and AAC. AAC is not a proprietary format. AAC is the audio format connected to the MP4 standard which was created many years before Apple's introduction. Because of Apple's forward thinking (and it's popularity amongst audio/video users), it was thru them that it was introduced to the general consumer. The good side is that you have better quality files with more stability. This is great for archiving purposes (I'm not sure if this is what you're doing with your harddrive collection), but if you're interested in listening on a variety of platforms, then I'd use a high MP3, AIFF, or WAV for that and make an extra AAC for your archive (if this is what you're doing). best, Rod ← Thanks, Rod. I don't know quite what you mean by "archiving." I have most of my music in WAV on compact discs and a good part of it ripped in AAC on my external hard drive. I wouldn't have much room to store WAVs or high MP3s any other way.

Thanks, guys. For me, that is good news and bad news. For some stupid reason, I had always assumed that the iPod itself was only compatible with AAC. The bad news is that I already have almost 200 GB of AAC files on my external hard drive and I am not planning on duplicating that effort. I guess the final good news is that Apple probably isn't going to go bankrupt any time soon.

I've never used the AAC format. I always rip to VBR MP3. You have control over your bit rate as well. ← ...and you can transfer those to the iPod with no problem?

...particularly given the unbelievable number of times that it was postponed in the past. This has to be some sort of record. It was still the 1990s when they first announced it as an upcoming release, then it was slated for 2000 and so on, and so on. I seem to recollect that some preliminary reviewer copies were even sent out a few years ago? No?

What concerns me most about iTunes is the particular AAC format that they use. I imagine that it SHOULD be possible to transfer AACs into MP3s that can be used for non-Apple applications. But does anybody have a program to do that?

Pour Vermouth over the ice in a pitcher. Wait 2.5 minutes. Then pour out the Vermouth. Pour in the Tanqueray. Stir lightly. Then pour into iced martini glasses. Serve the guests. Then open a nice bottle of French wine and pour yourself a glass. You deserve it.

Thanks, Marcel. Apparently, you know your Bird.

It that counting or not counting versions that use the Cherokee head?

This is one of my very favorite records, a underrated item if there ever was one.

Gatemouth lived a good long and rich life (81 years), and made great contributions to American music. He knew that he was dying for some time. But he didn't slow down until the very end. Rest easy, Gatemouth. I'll be tuning in to you all day today!

Some of us are on the road so much that it becomes the reason why we haven't had the time to listen to a lot of stuff. I like the idea of an expensive and somewhat bulky iPod that can hold 100GB or so and cheap, light, and convenient MP3 players that hold at least 2GB. One reason why I am reluctant to take my iPod with me on all of my trips is a worry that it will get stolen, lost, or smashed. A cheaper and smaller MP3 player would be better for that purpose. From that point of view, the nano is still a bit expensive.

The gems here are the two complete performance previews from the album, including a dynamite Evidence. The video is nothing all that special (IMO).

I can confirm that there is no problem. I run iTunes off of my external hard drive. You just save your iTunes folder to the external drive, go to preferences/advanced and type in the new reference as your default drive. iTunes does the rest.

Box Design sucks Miles/Trane Col. Compl.
John L replied to Soul Stream's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
The Coltrane Atlantic Box strikes me as an optimal design: sturdy individual cases that fit CD-sized cases, but don't take up quite as much room as normal CDs. Each individual case is very easy to access and contains all discographical and other information. The tape reel design for the early Giant Steps session was also classy. A secret to good design is to make discographical information available without the thick booklet, especially one with a tight spine. Discographical information is demanded repeatedly, whereas the book is usually a once read and occasional dip. -

Sonny Rollins
John L replied to Tom in RI's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
Well, I picked up Denmark vol. 1&2 and am EXTREMELY happy about it, to say the least. My initial confusion about the date stems from the fact that this store also has two other Moon discs called "Rollins Meets Cherry" that contain European concerts from 1963. How do those stand up? Thanks. John -

Martyjazz and Jim S.: Thanks. That's good enough for me, even though I still think that I am too young to go to heaven. -
Sonny Rollins

A local store has Denmark vol. 1 and vol. 2 on Moon records. It is the band with Cherry et al from (I believe) 1964. But the price is not cheap. Can anybody tell me how these concerts stack up in Rollins' discography? Thanks -
On the other hand, I guess that the inclusion of New Grass in this series means that they are no longer planning the much discussed 2-disc reissue with all of the previously unreleased material on it.

Is rap tomorrow's jazz?
John L replied to BeBop's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
"To intellectualize jazz:" to think long and hard about what you are going to play before playing "To overintellectualize jazz:" to think so long and hard about what you are going to play that you don't play shit. "To underintellectualize jazz:" to blow and blow and then say, "oh fuck." -
Actually, Jersey Blues should read Art Blakey featuring Woody Shaw as opposed to the other way around. It is an Art Blakey Jazz Messengers date, and had been released under Art Blakey's name before the Lone Hill issue. I guess that Lone Hill decided that the name Woody Shaw would strike a stronger chord among collectors of rare jazz who already have 700 Art Blakey discs.
