  1. I don't have too much Frisell, but I really enjoy what he does on those trio dates with Joey Baron and Arthur Blythe.
  2. Hans, You are an expensive board member! I was resisting this set, but now I bit on all three. Even with the discout, it's not too cheap! My wife may make Organissimo a restricted site after this. John
  3. HWright: Check out this link. I think that you will be VERY pleased. http://www.bluesandrhythm.co.uk/documents/200.pdf
  4. A woman's got to have it...
  5. It would be hard for me to agree that James Brown was in decline until after Payback, in fact probably until after Papa Don't Take No Mess. Then there is the incredible groove on Get Up Off of That Thing.
  6. I just heard Money in the Pocket for the first time, and that strikes me as one hell of an understatement. Forget perfect. How about pure dynamite? The whole disc smokes, but Cannonball's solo on "Here Me Takin' to Ya" has instantly become a personal favorite. Can rhythmic nuances on the blues get any deeper than that!!!???? Wholly shit!
  7. Brownie: Thanks for that interesting article. Sidwinder: It is mistake is to compare Beaujolais Nouveau with other, more serious wine. It is a beverage that is somewhere between beer and wine. It can be consumed cooler and faster than most other red wine without sacrificing anything. You don't even need wine glasses. Despite the obvious commerical interests, I really like the holiday. It is something like the traditional celebration of the harvest in the best spirit of civilization and wild good times.
  8. The best way to drink Beaujolais Nouveau is right out of the barrel: chug-a-lug I didn't realize that Duboeuf is facing charges like that. I have always treated his labels as a guarantee of quality from the Beaujolais region! The main commercial problem for Beaujolais is all of the cheap fresh, fruity wine for early consumption, including Nouveau, that is now made in so many countries of the world. I still really appreciate a nice cool bottle of Beaujolais Nouveau at least a few times a year. That bright bubble gum flavor reminds me of my days of buying packs of baseball cards and praying for a Willie Mays.
  9. I guess I'm going to have to pick this one up.

  11. Will somebody please pass the CDRs?
  12. I have Free Trade Hall (Manchester) as a 2-disc set on Magnetic.

    Lou Rawls

I wish Lou Rawls the best. He is certainly one of the best, a very distinctive a beautiful voice. Z: I don't think that Lou Rawls was ever a Soul Stirrer. But he did sing gospel at the same time as Sam Cooke in other groups, including the Chosen Gospel Singers and the Pilgrim Travelers. His recordings with the Pilgrim Travelers finally made it to CD only this year.
  14. I don't know anything about the George Harrison releases. But a good share of the CDs released in Russia are pirated. There are a number of other CDs that are released at a budget price only for the domestic market with the understanding that they will not be sold or re-sold anywhere else. Like many other "emerging market" countries, the Russia CD market is a case of the bad weeding out the good. Because pirating is so prevalent, there is not much of a market for legitimate CDs. There are few profits to be had. Some of the pirated Russian CDs have very bad sound quality. So be careful.
  15. I feel for you. I hope that you didn't sell your daughter too.

    Why is it....

OK, I got you now. I haven't been initiated into Dave's Gourmet yet. Sorry.

    Why is it....

So Sandoval is Dave's Gourmet Ultimate Insanity as opposed to Blair's Original Death Sauce? I'm going to have to think about that one.

    Charlie Parker

After you die, which day of the week March 12 turns out to be really doesn't matter.
  19. John L

    Why is it....

    Because he can.
  20. Bixing? I read through the article in anticipation of hearing all of the myths about Bix debunked. But I must have missed that part.
  21. Well, this is good news for me. I have Half Note recordings on two Magnetic bootlegs. But what is listed as "One Down, One Up" on one of those discs is actually "One Up, One Down," recorded at Birdland on 2/23/63!
  22. Fascinating. Where can this be purchased?
  23. Wow, I didn't know that. Thanks, Michael. What were the first commerical live jazz recordings? Spirituals to Swing?
  24. Good list. 1980 to the present is a time period when probably any two lists would have empty intersection. There were so many things going on in so many completely different directions. So much depends on perception and taste.
