  1. I had heard most of the box before I bought it. But the session with Thad Jones was new to my ears, and turned my head around. Fantastic music.
  2. Why is hard bop singled out here. Was there more drug use in hard bop than in other forms of jazz?
  3. The most brilliant member of the band was probably the piano player, Avery Parrish. If he would have lived just a little bit longer, he would be a household name in jazz circles. In fact, he is a household name among blues and jazz pianists (and many guitarists) for After Hours alone.
  4. Largest unavailable catalog?
  5. If you like this one, be sure and also get Jimmy Woods' Awakening: same lineup a half year later. I even like it more than Lookin' Good.
  6. I'm probably the only one here who listened to the first two Spice Girls records in their entirety.
  7. Thanks for that good news! Will it include new material?
  8. Did Hat lose the rights to Ne Plus Ultra? You would think that they would have reissued it by now. Maybe we should ask that question on the Warne Marsh thread? According to the Marsh discography, there is a lot of unreleased material from that session.
  9. I was going to remark that, having applauded many times at many concerts for particular passages, I can say that those are my hands on all of those records.
  10. Well, a third rate P-Funk groove is just about better than any non-P-Funk groove other than JB. I wants to get funked up.
  11. A lot of us love it. There is a thread in here somewhere where we had a love fest over this one.

    Steve Lacy

Scratching the 70s is worth it for including "The Owl." That may be my single favorite Steve Lacy record. Some of the material on Scrathing the 70s is highly experimental hit-and-miss early 70s sort of stuff that I don't listen to very often.
  13. I get in a lot of arguments over Rod Stewart. He is hated by many in jazz circles, especially for those last standards albums (which I don't like either). But I do like Rod Stewart. Maybe it is just my love for Sam Cooke. I love Sam Cooke so much that I am a sucker for anyone who tries to take Sam in some new direction.

    Free America

Martha is still confined to her home, in fact just as confined as the sound on the Rudd disc.
  15. My favorite blues singer from that part of the world is Van Morrison.
  16. Miles claims in his Autobiography that they met and played together. He describes how surprised he was when Jimi confessed not to be able to read music.
  17. By any objective criterion, Burdon is certainly the better singer. On the other hand, I would rather listen to Jagger, myself. It is hard to explain why. There is something highly personal and enjoyable about his delivery. When Mick sings the blues, it sounds more original to me than Burdon, maybe even less "authentic," but more interesting to my ears.
  18. Coltrane seemed increasingly interested in Eastern and African musics toward the end of his life. I imagine that he would have tried to mine those areas further.
  19. Is there a track listing? Is this the complete ball of wax?
  20. SORRY! For me, pre-war Lester was from a different planet and post-war he joined the rest of us. The post-war stuff is first rate, but (pre-war) DAMN! That sounds about right to me. Yet the human Lester was often just as moving as the alien Lester.

    Jelly Roll?

Yes, the Commodores are superb! I listen to them as much as any other Jelly Roll.
  22. Brownie: Will you be at the Braxton-Fred Anderson concert tomorrow by any chance? I have planned a transit stop in Paris just to attend. John
  23. I love the three takes of Bird of Paradise. You can can almost go step-by-step through the process that transformed All the Things You Are into an original composition on the spot. I would never want to be without the alternates to the Kansas City 6 Commodore sides. Each alternate is a masterpiece in and of itself. Then there are the alternate takes of Billie and Lester's "All of Me" that were too long at the time to fit on 78s. It don't get no better.
