It could have been "John's Idea."

Very nice. Thanks. t I guess that Lonehill will be releasing a new Coltrane disc soon: "the Complete Recordings with Count Basie." In addition to that track, it will contain 70 minutes of filler material of the classic quartet in Europe in the 60s (also available elsewhere).

It is interesting that Joshua Redman not only beat out Eric Alexander in the Thelonious Monk Competition, but Chris Potter as well. Potter finished 3rd, but has arguably become the more interesting player of the three.

Full House is my favorite, as well - a tremendous album all the way around. As I recall, there even exists a tape of Coltrane called out to the band "So What" to indicate that the next number is "Impressions."

The iPod shuffle will hold 20 albums or so, takes up no room, and costs about $45.

I'm pretty sure I brought this up here before....

Yea. Trane already had a quintet that split the money 5 ways. He didn't need another musician. I don't think that Trane would have hired Wes if he didn't think that this was something that he wanted musically. I didn't know about Trane sharing his income equally with his bandmates (I've never read his bio). Is this common knowledge? Certainly not a practice of many jazz stars. I didn't write "5 equal ways." I just had in mind the fact that Wes' services were not free for Coltrane. -
A giant of American music, indeed. RIP

Don't forget that Trane also asked Lee Morgan to join his first band, but Lee turned him down. -

I don't know about this concert in particular, but there indeed exist tapes of this sextet from California in 1961, Coltrane was the top bill. He hired Wes Montgomery for the band when they went to California. Thus, this was not just a one-shot deal. This sextet was Coltrane's working band at the time. When these tapes were discovered about a decade ago, the owner (Coltrane family?) tried to negotiate a deal for their release. No company would pay much for the copyright, however. Part of the problem, I heard, was that the sound quality is not that good. Since then, it appears that the owners are just sitting on the tapes in anticipation of a possible deal in the future. I would love to hear the tapes. -
CDDB indeed recognizes by track number and times. They must use an interval of a few seconds around the time for for each track. In fact, different pressings or releases of the same CD may also vary in that way. It is interesting that, for CDs with at least 3 tracks, the probability of 2 different records corresponding exactly with respect to tracks and times becomes very small. On the other hand, for one track CDs, CDDB comes up with the wrong information quite often. For two tracks, it is also rather common.

I love this LP, and miss it now that I am away from my LP collection. Has it ever appeared on CD or in digital form. I can't recall ever running across it. There is some great Pres here, especially on an extended version of Ghost of a Chance.

Who is this guy, anyway? He looks very familiar.

Why should it be time consuming? On manual, iTunes does not erase anything currently on your iPod. So you just delete the albums or songs that you no longer want on it, and add (drag from iTunes) the new albums or songs that you do want. Pretty fast and simple, if you ask me.

Brownie: It seems to have been a particular and strange problem with the server that I was using. I am now using another server and have no problems. Thanks
-
Brownie: On my computer, for some reason, even though the address is still jpg, when I right click to "save picture," it only allows me to save the picture as a bitmap file. When I right click to save the image you just posted, I cannot save it as a jpg. Can you? I was able to do that last week, but not now.

For some reason, the album covers at the site seem to have suddenly changed from jpg to bitmap files, making them more difficult to download.

Inspired by this thread, I spent part of the day revisiting these concerts. I actually came away feeling that the Paris Concert, although in great sound, is a bit less exciting than the others. Copenhagen may be the pinnacle, although the sound is probably the worst. Stuttgart is indeed fantastic, and in better sound than Copenhagen. I also like that second disc that you ordered (New York 62 / Stockholm 63) quite a bit. It is a new release that fills discographical holes around the bigger concerts, but some of those holes are very strong.
-
Paris is a good place to start - a fine concert, and in the best sound quality of all of them (excepting Our Man in Jazz, of course).
-
On the CD, Just Friends and Big Foot are both two minutes shorter. The other track times are within seconds of those. There is no drop-out on Just Friends on the CD. So that must explain the first.

Those guys sometimes do a service for those of us who don't have insider tracks to collectors circles. On the sound quality again: As I wrote, I think that the sound quality is quite good for this concert. Maybe the half-step pitch problem could bother people with perfect pitch (I wouldn't know), but it is not as if the pitch wobbles around a lot during the music, as is often the case with recordings made on cheap tape recorders. It is true that Hope and LaFaro are lower in the balance than would be optimal. But, hey, want to you want from a recording like this?
