  1. Ditto. Despite the rather low fidelity, I really like the June 17 set: a fabulous concert.
  2. "Johnny G.G." from the Johnny Griffin Sextet on Riverside. Kenny Drew sets down the blue mood exquisitely with Wilbur Ware and Philly Joe. Then Griff comes in for the kill, gradually picking up the intensity in his extended solo and then bends some blue grit high notes over the horn riffs. Mmmmmm, good!
  3. Owners of out-of-print US Mosaic sets can still rest assured. Mosaic will be obliged to include the errors in discographical information and liner notes that accompany exploitation of European copyright laws.
  4. You mean that only 0.2% of the time you got it like this?
  5. And Gene Ammons the fifth? :)
  6. Maybe Eddie Harris will be the fourth?
  7. Just Pres' solo? Billie's vocals on that one are equally incredible.
  8. That is one of my absolute favorites as well. On the subject of Embraceable You, my favorite might be the JATP 1949 version with both Bird and Pres playing back-to-back extended solos. Bliss.
  9. I think that the bottom line here is (a) Keith has reached a point in his career where he can do just about anything that he wants and people will still lay down their money to see him. (b) We have the right either to lay down our money or not. I don't lay down mine, but taste is taste.
  10. iTunes generally orders by arist, album, and track number. But you can create playlists that order your music chronologically in exactly the manner that you want. Therefore, you can have both orderings.
  11. I don't know if there is a way to only sync playlists. But you can always select manual rather than sync mode, and then just drag all of your playlists to the iPod.
  12. Jim S. and Larry K. got me really listening to Warne Marsh, for which I am deeply grateful.
  13. Five years in the Fed for burning a CD and giving it to a friend.
  14. Does anybody know what Palmetto has done with the extensive live recordings that they made of Andrew Hill? There were rumors flying around at one time about a lot more releases. I ask that because, although I like the Palmetto releases, I have heard concerts and other live recordings from Andrew's last decade that I find much more exciting.

A number of his recordings also feature some fine piano work from Eddie Costa. I believe that one of the Spanish labels issued a double CD not long ago of all of their collaborations.
  16. That's a good point. I first got into jazz in the mid-70s, and I really appreciated many of the extensive educational liner notes in 2-fer reissues from Fantasy, Blue Note, and Savoy. There seems to be a preference today for original liner notes, which can, in some cases, add valuable historical context, but often not.
  17. Was James Clay ever not James Clay?
  18. Interesting. If the feud was over in '54, you would think that Granz would have brought them together after that time. He must have tried. No? I imagine that Pres still refused to record with her for one reason or another. Didn't someone think to ask Granz this question?
  19. Yes, it is a major regret that they didn't record together for Verve. I heard that Billie and Lester had a fallout of some sort, but have never even heard a single rumor as to what it was about.
  20. Yes, the difference is STEVE KUHN!
  21. It just struck me that I don't have any jazz albums with Willis Jackson playing as a sideman. Did he ever do that?
  22. Blues and Roots Live in Antibes Charles Mingus Presents Charles Mingus
  23. Thanks for that fine detailed guide to Gator country, MG! It reminds me that I still need to snag some of those great Muse albums.
  24. Indeed he did. He took over from Clyde McPhatter as lead singer with Billy Ward & the Dominoes in 1953 and had a hit that year with "Rags to riches". One thing that Wilson could do that JB never could was sing a big ballad, or a blues ballad. "Doggin' around", "A woman, a lover, a friend" and "No pity in the naked city" are some of the JW singles I regret ditching back in the day. MG I don't know. I always thought It's a Man's, Man's, Man's World and I'm Just A Prisoner were a pretty "big" ballads. Yes, I have always considered James Brown to be a truly great ballads singer: add Bewildered, Try Me, Lost Someone, You've Got the Power, I Don't Mind... As for Jackie Wilson, he ruled the R&B stage in the late 50s and early 60s. Nobody could take him out. It is too bad that more of those shows were not recorded. He was much greater live than in the studio, where he often suffered from poor production or taste.
