One word - Phenomenal The first set was really good. The second - incredible. Took me to another place. Best version of Truckin' I've ever heard - nice long slow intro followed by a relaxed version of Truckin' that had you cherish every note. They jammed after that and went into Smokestack Lighting, followed by the second half of Truckin'. Of course, being in Buffalo - the truckin off to Buffalo line was special - the crowd sang along and I got goosebumps and a big smile. Some terrific jazz oriented jams filled the second set as well. Went with my 17 year old son. Was nice to share to moments with him. I also took him to the Dead show in 09.

So I log on today and check out the recently added topics. At the top of the list is this one: Miles Davis boyhood home vandalised by Chuck Nessa Today, 02:14 PM Had to do a double take and realize that this was a topic - posted by Chuck. Pretty funny - at least to me. All that said, this sucks

NOT the Tour de France and not worthy of its own thread, but I just wanted to throw in that I went to my first pro cycling event this past weekend. It was the Grand Prix Cycliste de Montréal. In two words - it was WAY COOL. Sort of a festival atmosphere. The weather was ideal - sunny and in the 70's. It's a circuit course, so I got to see 17 laps of the course, and since I walked to different spots, got to see several vantage points. It is indeed a thrill to see the peloton race by, only inches from where you are standing - so close that you can feel the wind as they go by. I loved seeing up close the colors of the teams as they sped past me. For several laps American Danny Pate either lead or was in a group of 4 breakaway riders, so it was fun cheering him on. I stood by the hair pin turn on Avenue du Parc for a few laps and watching them make that turn was exciting. Have to say that it is tough to tell who's who as the riders go by - so it was nice to see the video boards - but they were only around the starting area. The one identifiable guy was Phillipe Gilbert - as he wore the colors of the champion of Belgium. He's one of my favorites and I got to see him overcome an early crash with the help of his teammates and finish 3rd overall. He won the Quebec City event 2 days earlier. Great time, great atmosphere and a good time visiting Montreal. It was the first time for me in Montreal in the summer when the Jazz Festival was not going on. So I did a few other things like check out the Botanical Garen, take in an Irish Pub - Hurleys - and spend an evening in Old Montreal and have a great dinner with my wife.

I've been playing a lot of Chick today. Trio Music Live, The IS Sessions, Now He Sings, Now He Sobs, and now The Song Of Singing. I'm glad to have rediscovered this guy.

With the exception of the Complete "IS" sessions, I had not listened to Corea's music for at least 20 years. I was in high school in 73 or 74 when I first heard Return to Forever - and I have to say, I was blown away. Rather than compare and differentiate between the big fusion groups of the day - I tried to enjoy all of them as unique entities. I found that I got to enjoy a lot more music that way. My jazz explorations led me to broaden my horizons and move in other directions - but I'd have to say that I probably listened to most of the electric stuff Corea put out until the first few Electric Band albums. Around that time, I became a lot more aware of Scientology and remembered seeing all those thanks to L. Ron Hubbard on Corea's records. Based on what I knew/read/heard about Scientology and how they operate - I ended up losing all respect for Chick and lost interest in his music. I just never reached for his stuff any more. Fast forward to 2011. I heard about RTF appearing in Buffalo and mentioned it to my brother. He convinced me to go see them. In the past month - I've seen RTF twice. Once in my home town of Buffalo with my brother and then again with my boys while I was on a road trip that took us to St Louis on a day when RTF was in town. Both shows were fabulous. In Buffalo, the RTF concert is being hailed as "The Music Event of the Year". The whole experience has made me rethink my attitude toward Chick. Was I wrong or right to see him in a negative light due to his association with Scientology? I'm still not sure. I will say that I've started to play some of the stuff I have in my collection and have also picked up some more recent things. I've enjoyed what I have heard. Certainly some of the older stuff from the post RTF days does not hold up all that well - though there are some good moments. I've always been a big fusion guy, so please don't tell me that his fusion stuff doesn't cut it either. I've enjoyed RTF Returns, the acoustic RTF - Forever, the week long live Origin recordings. Just today, I've mined Half.com for some real deals on some post 90's releases and some of the 80s stuff I never picked up like Trio Music, Touchstone, Three Quartets - and am looking forward to hearing them. I don't know what Chick's legacy is or will be, but I have to say that that I'm enjoying my re-exposure to his music all these years later.

I saw this thread and descended into my basement and retrieved....... all four OTB releases. Spent some of the weekend listening to most of the discs. Pretty solid, not bad, listenable, enjoyable are some of the descriptions that come to mind. Overall, I'd say I they are good to very good, but I'm pretty easy to please. I've definitely heard worse, and also better. I suppose that perceiving the band as some sort of marketing ploy sort of taints the perception. I read in one of the liner notes how Blue Note was sort of trying to put out a modern Jazz Messengers vibe on the whole thing. I'm not sure if that held up at all - but like I said - pretty decent stuff.

I'll add another recommendation for Caveau de la Huchette. Was there several years ago and had a blast. A saxophone quarter played... and people danced. Way cool atmosphere.

Didn't the 60s Blue Note Dexter Box used to sell for a whole lot more than this? Used Dexter BN 60s from around $70 -

Same here. Really enjoyed it. I saw him live during that period and as Jim mentioned - they were excellent. -
Thought it was an excellent tour - lots of great moments throughout. I was pulling for Andy Schleck, but Cadel Evans did what he had to do to close the gap in the Alps and then take it with the TT. Great ride by Cadel. I watched all 21 stages and had a great time watching.

I have about 15 LP Mosaic sets plus a bunch of other LPs that I have not listened to in years. I've decided to look for a turntable and and know basically nothing. I'd like to spend $300 or less and don't care if its used or new. I'm not an audiophile by any means - but I don't want to destroy my Mosaics by using some piece of garbage. My only brand name familiarity is with Technics. I'm not stuck on Technics, but I did check out some on Ebay. There's a vintage SL-3300 on auction that looks decent. Also listed in vintage - an SL-D2 with a buy it now of $175 and an SL-D3 for $50. A local guy on Craigslist is selling a newer Technics SL-1210MK2 for $550 Then, when I was searching the forum I saw that someone recommended and purchased an Audio Technica AT-PL120. I guess this one plays 78s which is a nice bonus. Anyone have any recommendations or opinions?

Shot glasses Ever since my ex wife took off in 2004/2005, I've taken at least 2 vacations a year with my boys. It started with them wanting to by me a memento of the trip. It appears that every tourist destination has shot glasses and all sorts of things upon which their names are emblazoned. Shot glasses might be the the least expensive and given that my boys were 7 an 9 at the time - shot glasses were perfect. I've now got almost 50 shot glasses with the names of attractions ranging from Quebec City to Shenandoah and Acadia to Chicago. Turned out to be a fun idea. -

Seems like every time I check this thread, I've missed out on something. Today I scored. I had already earned enough Ebay bucks to cover the cost of the set - so basically I'm just paying the freight across the Atlantic for this one. Not bad. -
I went to Cooperstown in 2005 with my boys and can echo much of the same sentiment as the above posters. Great place to visit - for a day. I camped in a local NY State Park - Lake Glimmerglass - so I can't comment on the cost of rooms. Cooperstown was a nice place. The area in general seemed very nice, picturesque, quaint, etc As for staying in the area longer, you're coming from fairly far away, I believe - so relatively speaking you're close to many other attractions. When I was there I visited Howe Caverns and Secret Caverns. Saratoga is about 2 hrs drive - there's a performing arts center there and also a pretty famous horse race track. The giant Adirondack Park is 3-4 hours drive if outdoors type activities are your bag. The New York State Finger Lakes area is very pretty with lts of boating, fishing and several nice wine trails. I guess it depends a lot on how you like to travel. If you don't mind jumping around, there's plenty to see and do for a longer stay.

Well, I'm back from my trip to Ireland. I only wish there was a way to compress time so that I could have spent a month's worth of time in the 11 days I had. What a beautiful, beautiful country. The people were friendly, the accommodations very nice and the driving was exhilarating! The music and pubs were really special. I heard some great traditional Irish music, but also spent time in pubs in various locations that featured rock and modern music infused with Irish themes. I heard a guy named Jim McKee in a pub in Ballyvaughan who was excellent. Had a great time in a really tiny place in Killarney that was packed and hot - but so very nice, and friendly. Heard some great music in a place in Clifden. In Dublin - on our first night we ended up in a small pub near St Stephens Green. I was at arm's length from the guy who was singing/playing guitar. Between sets, I thanked him for making our first night in Ireland so special. Had my first Bulmer's there - and boy do I wish I could get it in the States. Whether driving or walking or bicycling - there was another beautiful sight around every corner. And thank god for my Garmin Nuvi! I downloaded maps of Ireland and it helped so much. Some of my favorites were Dingle, the beautiful beaches and crystal clear water, the view out of my hotel room in Killarney, the night I spent in Ballyvaughan, the Ballynahinch Castle and bicycling on Inish Moor in the Aran Islands. What a great day that was - one of those that you will carry to your grave. Thanks to all of you who helped me rein in what was an overly ambitious itinerary and come up with something more manageable. I'll tell you though - I could have spent a week at each stop and probably want to spend more time. But one has to try to balance the time you have with what you want to see and what you want to experience. I hate time. If/when I return to Ireland, I'll have the entire island north of the highway that runs from Dublin to Galway to explore. Looking forward to it.
