Can you elaborate on that? Why don't you think it shouldn't be banned? I guess it's because I believe that if two consenting adults ( or minors with appropriate permission/supervision) want to beat each other senseless and others care to watch them do so they have that right. There's too much banning talk going on and I prefer to have government stay out of things like this. I suppose that reform - such as head gear - would get things focused on technique and strategy, but I don't care enough about it to even think about any other reforms.

New issue JAZZIZ is pretty good
Ed S replied to a topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
Tony, you're probably right. I know I'm thinking of a time that the venom and vitriol was spewed all over the Blue Note Board and a time when any thread at any time could break out into a flame war that was usually political and/or religious in nature. There were times that as much as I enjoyed discussing and learning about jazz, I began to hate coming to the board. So I guess in retrospect, there were a number of posters taking part in that sort of thing But that was indeed another time and place. At this board, the same basic cast of characters has confined the politics to the political threads. If there is any venom or vitriol therein, I am unaware as I do not read those threads. There certainly has been no spillover to the rest of the board - which has made this a pleasant place to hang. Arguments will always break out and we will have to agree to disagree. On the BNBB, it seemed like there were a few posters who enjoyed arguing for the sake of arguing and baiting posters into fights with flames, condescending attitude, and incendiary comments. Once again, that was then and this is now. -
I hate boxing. I hope that someday people will no longer have the need to watch two people try to beat each other into unconsciousness and the "sport" will die the death that it deserves. That said, I am against a ban.

In a technical sense, we don't. Guess I was speaking about my own ability to ignore and the list of posters that merit being ignored. As a BNBB member from 1998 to the present I guess I've learned who should be on my personal ignore list and why. But in the spirit of letting bygones be bygones and as this is a new board and a new time and place I once again welcome Greg. WELCOME GREG -

All good things must come to an end. First addition to my ignore list. Let's hope that this Saturday does not go down in Organissimo history as Black Saturday -
Anyone spot these on Jazzmatazz? Willie Bobo - Bobo's Beat (Blue Note/Roulette) July 8 — from 1962 Jack Costanzo - Latin Fever (Blue Note/Liberty) July 8 — from 1957 Bobby Hutcherson - Montera (Blue Note) July 8 — from 1975 The Jazz Crusaders - Chile Con Soul (Blue Note/Pacific Jazz) July 8 — from 1965 Joe Torres - Latin con Soul (Blue Note/World Pacific) July 8 — from 1967 An interesting group of recordings. Anyone know anything about the music on these? I'll probably check 'em out anyways but I'm curious if any of you have heard these at some point and would care to comment. By the way, Jazzmatazz mentions that they are due out on July 8, but CD Universe says August 7

I'm having trouble understanding why selections from a live recording would be rejected vs unissued. I would guess that if they are playing a live gig the songs must have been acceptable at some level. I can't imagine that the band could have flubbed them so badly given that they were part of the band's live repertoire and included in the performance that night. What am I missing: Sound issues? Crowd noise? False starts?

Welcome And please do stop by when time allows

Anyone ever check this guy out? I saw a Best of collection on the BN site and was intrigued. I know next to nothing about Tango, read some of the AMG comments and figured what the heck. I found a cheapo copy on Half.com and bagged it. Really really interesting. In fact, I'm digging the hell out of it. Most of the music was recorded between 1933 and 35 and was transferred from 78s. The sound is good to my ears, given the source material. It's typical of what I've heard insofar as transfers from 78s is concerned. The music is fabulous. I have no idea what he's singing about but it's intense, rhythmic, passionate.... and captivating. I think I've listened a half dozen times since it arrived yesterday.

Help on Soul Jazz?? Ronnie Foster- Jack McDuff
Ed S replied to Morganized's topic in Recommendations
As above, buy 'em. Both are nice Rare Grooves. If you dig the Foster, check out Sweet Revival. It's another BN recently reissued on BN France and available at Dustygroove for $14. Not as good as Freap, but Foster has a way with those 60s pop tunes that really works for me. Killer version of Me and Mrs Jones -
Welcome Paul Good to see another of the the southern hemisphere contingent join the board. Lots of posters here bounce between AAJ and here. I had not seen your name on AAJ, though. Both boards have a lot to offer. See ya 'round the board.

I always thought you were certifiable This certainly verifies that. Congratulations I'm not a music teacher, but I can attest to how wonderful it is to have a music program in schools. Because we had enrolled him in piano lessons (private - from a local jazz guy) my son had enough aptitude to be selected as a 3rd grader to join the school string orchestra - that's a year early in our district. At any rate, the teacher was fabulous. He really got involved with each child's progress. I received a few phone calls with tips etc. What a great guy. He and the music program are really making a difference in my son's 3rd grade experience. my son is confident in his abilities and proud of his involvement with the orchestra.

Thanks for posting that. Very nice review. This set looks like one to pick up for sure.

It does indeed sound interesting. I'll have to keep this one in mind as I'm checking out various online stores. looks like a nice one to pick up.

I was listening to this this morning on my car ride in to work and was going to get a thread started on this one. I like it a lot. Very nice straight ahead playing. Super band as well. I first heard him on a couple of Sam Yahel records on Naxos and he really impressed me. This is a nice disc to pick up if you like nice, straight ahead jazz guitar.

I'm very happy to see these being released. I was a big fan of the West Coast Classics series and am glad that MC found a way to get this material released.

Some excellent suggestions. I'm pulling for Dexter's Nights at the Keystone myself. I like the Jaki Byard/Imperial suggestion. There's so much material out there that fit so nicely into the Mosaic Select concept that it's making my head spin I'm happy to see the PJ stuff coming out. I'm sure that we'll see lots of Roulette, Roost, UA as well. How 'bout that Roulette Birdland Series being released as a series of 3 CD volumes? I'd like to see them use Select to do some late 60s BNs as well. The Eddie Gales are being released later this month on some other label. But I'm guessing there's be other material from that time period as well. Someone mentioned a Hutcherson/Land and a Horace Silver - Silver 'n...... - Nice ideas as well. I'd love to see a Pullen or an Adams or both as well.

The Mosaic site is featuring this non-Mosaic collection over on the side of the page where the new releases are found. It seems a little unusual for them to be selling somethng like this off of their website and not just sell it through True Blue. Is there something special about this set that warrants special treatment? Anyone know the story on this?

Bummer. I guess I got lucky when I found it up. I did place an order. I saw Phil Grenadier's two albums so I bagged those plus a few more of the Spanish Blue Notes.

Fresh Sound website back up.

At the same time I appear to be peaching tolerance, I can't help but wonder how many hear Kenny G, realize he sucks, associate him with jazz, and stop right there.

I think jazz has more problems than recognizing the melodies of "standards". Though I think the point is a valid one. But it's just one of the problems. I often wonder how many young people dismiss jazz out of hand specifically because they do associate it with standards and an older generation. It takes a long time to appreciate the words and melodies of a standard, especially if you're coming from a rock background. It was not until I was in my 30s that I really began to dig mainstream jazz. Prior to that, I was a fusion head - and I bet there's a lot of jazzers that don't even include fusion as a type of jazz. That's part of the problem too - jazz elitism and intolerance of the fringes of jazz and modern attempts at fusion. I think the Norah Jones, as well as Diana Krall - even the Pat Metheny Group- are great examples of elitism and intolerance. Instead of either remaining silent because we have nothing good to say, or being constructive in our remarks - we attack and demean some of these artists. So Norah's not great jazz or may even be more country than jazz. So what? I can't help but wonder how many Norah fans came to the BN website and thought we were a bunch of a-holes for bashing her. I know not everyone did, but enough did to make it uncomfortable for a Norah fan or a potential jazz newbie to never come back. I know this is a tough issue because we are generally more seasoned jazz fans and are discussing amongst ourselves the merits of a Krall or a Jones or Cincotti or Metheny and comparing them to our broader exposure to jazz. I've taken part in those conversations. I mocked Cincotti and I started that Norah's favorite color thing on her fan site. But I also can't help but wonder we are perceived and jazz is perceived among those at the fringes or those testing the waters.
