Name some Blue Note cds you find overrated

I hope he's not going to isue do one of those trilogy things. As bad as the first two will be I'm sure that the third will be by far the worst. -

By the way ralphie_boy - keep your comments about Our Man In Paris to yourself - unless you plan on ruining my day further B) -

It didn't take long to come up with the "or worse", Brad. Ralphie boy just 'fessed up to not liking GO. Blasphemy at it worst ( or is it blasphemy at its best) B) -
I remember reading on the BNBB that the Collins tapes had disappeared. I'd like to hear this one as well.

That ROuse tune, which used to be heard as the into to the old Blue Note Radio program at BN is a killer. That song is indeed worth the price of admission - but there's enough other material of interest to make it a nice pickup, IMO

Here's the list of Conns released in 1999 to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Blue Note: SERIES X (1999) Grant Green – Blues for Lou Bobby Hutcherson – The Kicker Jimmy Smith – Six Views of the Blues Art Blakey – Drums Around The Corner Lou Donaldson – A Man with a Horn Dizzy Reece – Comin’ on Various Artists – The Lost Sessions Of course Grant Green's First Session was released a couple of years ago as well. I've got 'em all and there are good and not so good moments amongst them. I think a lot of Blue Note fans might have been expecting undiscovered masterpieces. They are not. I can certainly see why a couple were never released. But I find them all listenable with the Hutcherson, Reece and Smith very good and the rest not among the respective artist's best work, but keepers in my mind. I'm easy to please, though, so perhaps I'm the perfect customer for the next round of lost sessions.

I don't have any idea how much unreleased material there is, but I think BN has done a decent job of getting this stuff out when possible. The 60th anniversary series of Conns was all previously unreleased material. Since then, they've released another Grant Green Session and this fall there will be an Andrew Hill. Is there more?

Perhaps the situation at Sony will end up benefitting Mosaic. Looks like they've secured the Woody Herman material already. I hope there's more on the way.

Yes, by all means - a hearty welcome to Evan.

Typo? Or some sort of Freudian slip. Is the good doctor around?

I'd also take Dave Holland's recent band as is: Holland, Nelson, Potter, Kilson, Eubanks
-
Greg Osby - Alto Terence Blanchard - Trumpet Jason Moran - Piano Ralph Peterson - Drums Tarus Mateen - Bass
-
Kenny Burrell - Midnight Blue Grant Green - Idle Moments Dexter Gordon - One Flight Up, Our Man In Paris Herbie Hancock - Maiden Voyage Freddie Hubbard - Ready For Freddie
-
Dexter on tenor Kenny Dorham on trumpet Niels Henning Orsted Pederson on Bass Kenny Clarke on drums Sonny Clark on Piano

Very nice recording too. Definitely worth seeking out. I bought mine some time ago from Dusty Groove.

Guess I'll have to start using old favorites like "you snotty faced heap of parrot droppings" a little more selectively. Some people just can't take a joke A lot of this Monty Python stuff goes right over people's heads these days anyways. Like recently at work, they've tried to get us managers to be more complimentary to employees who do outstanding work. So naturally, I've started to make a point of singling out excellent work with a cheerful "good lad, backbone of England". I just get blank stares from these people. Sheesh. And would you believe that I actually received a call from administration requesting that I stop using "and now the new for wombats" as a segue to the technical support staff portion of department meetings? This is all getting quite silly. -

In the category of just don't like - Bobby Hutcherson's Natural Illusions. The absolute worst of what 70s Blue Note had to offer. The only reason I bring it up is because on occasion, I see it associated with a wish list for some 70s Hutchersons in the form of a box or just straight reissues. This one stinks. I've seen the Sidewinder mentioned above as well. Not one of my favorites, although I like it enough. Greg Osby and Jason Moran did a killer cover of this tune during a recent concert I saw, BTW. -
The only one I knew about is Paris Jazz Corner, but you knew of it too. Have a great time in Paris and happy birthday.

I voted for Rodney as well, mostly because I thught he's desrving of the attention and thought others would overlook him. One thing this poll shows me - I need to get more Parker in my collection.

My ears are not as gifted as some, but I think the Mosaic LPs sound fabulous. I can't compare to the original pressings as I have not heard them. I don't know how easy they are to find or whether you can find them in the same mint condition as a brand new Mosaic pressing either. I generally don't upgrade CDs, I don't seek out TOCJs or JRVGS but once I heard my first Miles Mosaic, I grabbed 'em all (over a period of time of course

Since I was checking out which version I had, I decided to give this one a spin. I agree with Brad's assessment. It doesn't cook. At all. It's not terrible, but it's far from good, IMO. I guess I'd say it's listenable and certainly interesting from the standoint that it's Morgan and Hubbard, though neither distinguishes himself her. The songs just seem to ramble on forever. The solos are disjointed and all over the place. The band just never clicks. This used to get HUGE buck on ebay. I wonder how many buyers were disappointed after dropping $30 or so on this one.

I do like the fact that Selects are listed out separately and the classic Mosaic sets are separated out by style or label. Overall, the page seems to work okay from a functional standpoint. I like the idea someone else mentioned above. The original Homepage with Mobley, which would link to this page for checking out the catalog.

What should i do this weekend?
Ed S replied to Soulstation1's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Hey, that's what I'm doing this weekend -
The Night of the Cookers that I have is a domestic Blue Note doubletime release - 2 CDs. So yes, the answer to your question is that there is a volume 2 and it's pretty much more of the same. The Spanish Blue Note series that's being sold through Fresh Sounds has the volumes as two separate CDs. You know what I hate about those old Blue Note doubletime releases is that idiotic band that annonces DOUBLETIME 2CDs for one low price. I totally ruins the cover artwork. Shame on them.
