  1. Any good ones out there that you can sit through? I just got Steve Lacy's Only Monk album, and I like it. I don't think I have anything else in my collection that isn't guitar or piano.
  2. Some great records in this set. Been digging it all week!

    John Tchicai

Tchicai made a great record with Charlie Kohlhase called Life Overflowing. I bought a copy from Charlie about a dozen years ago. http://www.allmusic.com/album/life-overflowing-mw0000777800
  4. Dusty Groove is great for being out of stock.
  5. ^^^^ Email sent. Will wait for their response. Thanks!
  6. Carmell Jones played on one of the most famous 60s Blue Notes. Song For My Father.
  7. It's available direct from Futura/Marge Records in Paris http://futuramarge.free.fr/ Not the easiest site to navigate. Click "Blue Marge" and it's # "1001". I've bought directly from them via the website with no problem. They've got some great stuff, but I'm not sure how to put together an order at this site? There's no shopping cart. I really like the sound of the Mal Waldron trio date from 1970, and the Sam Rivers Crosscurrent. Those two plus the Shepp Big Band would be my initial order. The Ted Curson Pop Wine sounds great too!
  8. It's available direct from Futura/Marge Records in Paris http://futuramarge.free.fr/ Not the easiest site to navigate. Click "Blue Marge" and it's # "1001". I've bought directly from them via the website with no problem. Thanks! I'll look it up. I just found my copy of The Cry Of My People. Will give it a listen this weekend.
  9. Thanks for the links to the older threads! I guess I missed out on the Attica Blues Big Band CD? I've never read about or seen a listing for that one anywhere.
  10. I haven't seen any discussion on Shepp here, with the exception of an old thread about Coral Rock, which I haven't heard. I've been revisiting most of my Shepp albums in the past two weeks. Live In San Francisco Mama Too Tight The Way Ahead Kwanza Attica Blues San Francisco, and The Way Ahead sounding the best to these ears. I'm still trying to locate my copies of Magic Of Juju, and The Cry Of My People. And I haven't revisited Four For Trane, because I know that one the best. I just picked up a reissue of some '75 material on a CD called Lybia [sic]. Not the original title, but some cooking straight ahead stuff. I didn't think of it at the time of purchase, but it could be a bootleg? I can't recall the label at the moment.
  11. I'll skip the ECM box since I've picked up Tribute, and Psalm in the past two years. I need to get the Soul Note box.
  12. I'm a fan of his old trio w/ Kermit Driscoll and Joey Baron. Their Live CD from 1990 is amazing! And I like the ECM album, Lookout For Hope w/ Hank Roberts. I lost track after he mellowed with Nashville and so on...
  13. I received my Air CDs. Love 'em! Will be picking up some more titles including the Abrams piano disc, and Monty Waters.

How about the duo album Sidelines, on Paul Bley's label? I've never heard of this one, but I like the sound of it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k-aX6kla25Y
  15. I've always liked his ECM album, Getting There. And Lovano's first Blue Note record w/ Abercrombie, Landmarks. Also, the McCoy Tyner double album 4 x 4, where each side features a guest soloist including Abercrombie, Hutcherson, Hubbard, and Arthur Blythe.

Speaking of trio material, there's a live trio CD, In Concert, that sounds good.
  18. I like one of their early albums called It's a Jungle In Here. That one has some tunes on it. But everything else I listened to after that is lacking in the writing department. They have a lot of grooves and jams, but no melodies.
  19. Well he was human, so flaws come with the territory. But he was also one of the most fearless, tireless, and fascinating artists of the era. I can't think of too many other artists who had as much talent, skill, and knowledge as Zappa.
  20. Speaking of kinder and warmer, that extremely late interview where he was too weak to even sit up is very moving. He looks like an Indian guru with the flowing hair and heavy beard, and he speaks so warmly about his friend Nicolas Slonimsky. It's up on YouTube. Anyway, I don't want to get too carried away about his personal traits. All I know is that he turned me onto a lot of great music and artists because he had good taste. And there is a warmth and optimism at the core of his music, even though he could be cynical and negative at times.
  21. Do you have some personal experiences to relate regarding this statement? I don't buy the cultivation of an arrogant and belligerent public persona. As a matter of fact, one of my best friends was approached by Zappa during the intermission of a Mothers show back in 1968. Rather than retreat to the dressing room, FZ wanted to mingle with the audience and talk to people. Of course this became more difficult after he became a household name. And he obviously was more guarded after being assaulted and seriously injured by a fan in 1971.
  22. Why get into assumptions about the character of a man who's been dead for 20 years, and that you didn't know? During his lifetime Zappa was very approachable to his fans, and as far as doing interviews, he was cordial, patient, and polite most of the time. And what human being can claim to never have been an asshole to someone on occasion?
  23. ^^^^ I'm a former hack guitar player and drummer. I could never dream of playing high level stuff like Zappa.
