  1. I've used them many times as an Amazon vendor, but just recently placed a large order directly through their website. Prices are much cheaper direct, but I'll have to wait and see about the service.
  2. Maiden Voyage, Speak No Evil, and Destination Out deserve the classic album status imo. I've been listening to Moncur's Some Other Stuff, lately, and I dig it. Recommended to fans of Tony William's BN album, Lifetime. And Shorter plays some great stuff on this as well. Agree with the ho hum reaction to Una Mas. It doesn't sound particularly inspired. Kenny Dorham did better stuff on other labels. Never cared for Sidewinder, either.
  3. Anybody picked up one or more of the three box sets available from DG, Erato, Virgin? The 5 disc box is a bit confusing as it displays the Erato logo, but contains EMI and Virgin recordings. The Dutilluex 1916-2013 Erato box is definitely the Erato recordings by Barenboim and Dutilleux's pianist wife, Ms. Joy. The new DG box is the most comprehensive at 6 CDs. 4. Anyone listening to Maurice Ohana? I discovered him yesterday. Born in Morocco in 1913. He wrote quite a bit of engaging, interesting music for many different instruments and ensembles. There are a number of recordings on the Timpani label conducted by Arturo Tomayo. Bio & discography at Archiv. http://www.arkivmusic.com/classical/Name/Maurice-Ohana/Composer/8886-1 Here are a music links: Chiffres de clavcin Cello Concerto No. 2 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=95FRY2HbYJA Avoaha for percussion, piano, and choir http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rUcdOgyLJ_8 Concerto for 10 string guitar & orchestra w/ Narciso Yepes
  5. Odyssey Of Iska features some beautiful playing. There's some stuff on YouTube. Love the album with Milton too!
  6. I used to buy every release from Metheny, Sco, Lovano, Kenny Garrett. Not anymore. I still love those cats, but I gotta move on. I liked Sco better when he had the heavy chorus/distortion blend. Now he's got that muted, clipped tone that I don't care for. I gave up on Garrett after the vocal album. And I'm not much of a Chris Potter fan, so Unity Band didn't intersest me. I cooled on David Murray as well. Too many predictable solos. Last one I bought was Sacred Ground, which left me cold. Some artists I admire crank out way too many releases to keep up with. Frisell, and Steve Coleman come to mind. Several others that I was happy to continue following, unfortunately died. Don Pullen, Steve Lacy.
  7. James Spaulding Prince Lasha
  8. Haven't been able to get into the Dixon set. Just not my cuppa. Probably should have gone for the Pullen or Hemphill instead. The Abrams set is terrific! Lots of variety and inspired playing from the early free albums, to the highly sophisticated and exhilirating Hearinga Suite. By far my favorite set of the six I've purchased. I like the Lacy, and Russell sets too.
  9. Getting into a little bit of opera recently. Prince Igor -Sofia Opera on Brilliant Classics Boris Goudonov - Rostropovich/Erato label Shostakovich - Lady Macbeth Of Mtsensk on EMI Schoenberg - Moses und Aaron Boulez/Sony Just ordered Hindemith's Mathis der Maler on EMI

  11. The Manfred Schoof material is great. I've watched all of those YouTube clips, and I have the ECM re-issue. Chris Potter plays bass clarinet on occasion.
  12. You'd never know by reading the jazz rags. Lateef has never gotten the recognition he so richly deserves.
  13. Salutes Bessie Smith is the only Myers album I have. Good stuff!
  14. I caught Mr. Allison in 2004 performing with bassist Rich Syracuse. I couldn't believe how much energy he had at age 77. A Certified Senior Citizen! I spent a lot of time listening to the Atlantic compilation, Allison In Wonderland. Long live the Sage Of Tippo.
  15. It took me forever to get into Mahler, but I became a Bruckner convert in one day. I picked up three recordings. No. 4 by Rogner No. 6 by Nagano No. 9 by Wand Will be trying out Chailly's 7 soon, and Karajan's 8.
  16. Cuneiform has released a number of excellent archival recordings including a 1973 live broadcast (NDR Workshop) with a great quality DVD. I like all of the Hugh Hopper, and Robert Wyatt albums I've heard as well.
  17. Mike Manieri released two volumes of Beatles material on his NYC Records label.
  18. This 5 CD box has generally been high priced, but I just snagged a copy from Wayside Music for 36 dollars. About half of the list price. http://www.waysidemusic.com/
  19. why oh why did I buy this fizzy piss?
  20. Ha! I remember putting this on the stereo 12-15 years ago and going Ugh! The other ones I picked up at the time were fine, including The Restful Mind; Live At Village Gate; Offering.
  21. Ben Monder is about as harmonically complex as it gets. Here's the title track from Oceana. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YvSueVPRrYY
  22. Here's a welcome boxed set released this past week. http://www.prestoclassical.co.uk/r/DG/4791522
  23. Of the earlier albums, I like Sine Die, and the tad more traditional Rhythm In Mind. I don't know which Dave Holland albums you've heard, but everything with Coleman is worth picking up.
