  1. I recently picked up five of the titles from CD Japan. I like having the original album covers.

  3. Marion Brown-Three For Shepp 4 dollars from a local store!
  4. The same letter also stated that nobody should get haircuts anymore. But I think it was due to The Mothers. They never wore those stupid suits, and they had long hair before the other bands.
  5. Here's a podcast of some beautiful reminiscences from Pat Metheny, Jack DeJohnette, and Charlie Haden on the recording of 80/81. I always thought that it was Pat vocalizing his enthusiasm for DeJohnette at the end of the Turnaround track, but turns out that was Charlie Haden. http://www.patmetheny.com/news/full_display.cfm?id=81

  7. It doesn't sound good. I hope he pulls through. This statement from Bootsy Collins: "FUNKATEER'S, we need yr prayers & Love Vibes for one of ours. "Dennis Chambers" is in intensive care and they're working on getting him off the respirator. They are filtering his liver as it's not functioning well. Renee is there and we are all praying for him."

  9. Great interview. Thanks!

  11. The Best Of John Fahey is a great introduction. You get a lot of music for the money. One more guy I'll mention is Harvey Reid. He's been an independent artist from the start, and he currently has a large catalog of recordings on his own Woodpecker Records. I don't like to listen to blues only, and Harvey is a master of many styles, and he is also a great songwriter and instrumentalist. A good introduction would be his 2 CD live album, In Person. Here's a tune from the album, that is also on his DVD. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0pZbZgkhoP8
  12. You can go for the originals like Robert Johnson, Son House, Lightnin' Hopkins, Reverand Gary Davis, Blind Blake, Blind Willie McTell. Or if you want high fidelity modern recordings, there are many fine players including Rory Block, Roy Bookbinder, Paul Geremia, Bob Brozman, and English guitarists who play folk and blues including Bert Jansch, John Renbourn, Martin Simpson. The Essential John Renbourn has quite a bit of good blues playing. Geoff Muldaur is another fine player and singer. Try his album, Password.
  13. Those are my three favorite Grant Green albums. Never heard of a jazz fan who didn't like ballads.
  14. ^^^ That is the Threnody recording to have!
  15. Why isn't this one available? Seems it's been out of print forever.
  16. I obviously was referring to his more recent work. I love Extrapolation, and I think it's a brilliant debut record. Wonderful compositions, and the vibe that really draws one into the music.
  17. Nobody's questioning McLaughlin's jazz credentials. As far as guitar tones, it's a matter of taste. And he's never been known as a guitarist with exceptional tone qualities. For my ears, his approach is more suited to acoustic guitar because he doesn't really exploit the capabilities of the electric guitar as far as sustain, phrasing, or vocal qualities. His hard staccato picking style combined with the heavy chorus sound doesn't appeal to everyone. That said, I do enjoy it in small doses. There's a track on Gary Husband's Dirty And Beautiful album where McLaughlin sounds inspired and plays some great stuff. He's no doubt one of the greats, and his contributions to modern music are quite significant. I've been listening for over 30 years now, and I have most of his records.
  18. I'm a big fan of his early 90s trio. And his 1981 album, Belo Horizonte is a favorite.
  19. Too many of their listed titles are out of stock. I ordered a couple that said "ships in 5-10 days" and never got 'em.
  20. He raves about a lot of stuff, but I can't share his enthusiasm for many of the releases.
  21. I didn't care too much for Now Hear This. It's samey sounding all the way through with a lousy mix and drum sound. And McLaughlin has been using the same chorus heavy guitar tone for over 20 years now. It pretty much bored me to death.
  22. Snagged three of the Elvin Jones titles. Too bad The Prime Element isn't available.
  23. George Russell-Ezz-thetics Joe Henderson-Inner Urge Oliver Nelson-Straight Ahead Tony Williams-Lifetime Bobby Hutcherson-Stick Up Coltrane's Sound Mingus-Oh Yeah Current fave is Miles In The Sky
  24. Jaco Wayne Shorter Tony Williams
  25. Of their Vanguard albums, I really like Winter Light. Great material, and their recording of Jim Pepper's Witchi Tai To is sublime. The first ECM album is a lot different than the old stuff, but I enjoy it for what it is. The lead off track, The Rapids is a high point. Reminds me of Metheny a little bit, but Pat was obviously influenced by Ralph Towner. I also have their Ecotopia album w/ Trilok Gurtu which has some good material, and some very 80s sounding synth.
