To me, 'Blue Afternoon' holds up really well, but you are correct on the others. I do like "Monterey" from 'Starsailor' and "The Dolphins" from 'Sefronia' and parts of 'Greetings From LA' sound pretty good. But 'Look at the Fool' is utterly painful start to finish.

Eric Alexander is my guy from the younger generation. Harper doesn't count, he reaches back to the golden era, though it's obvious how I feel about his music :-).

And for Buckley, it worked ('Happy Sad','Blue Afternoon', 'Lorca') until it didn't ('Starsailor', unless you're into that - I know some people are, and I've tried plenty of times to be since 1970, with no success). And then came phase 3, where he tried to sell out (poorly) but still was bizarre ('Greetings from LA', 'Sefronia', 'Look at the Fool'). So to me, his last four albums were different sorts of disasters. Yet he continued to be good live the whole way through, from the recordings I've heard. That being said, I still find the first two albums to be magic ("Goodbye and Hello" is my favorite album of all time, period), and only find 'Blue Afternoon' to be so from the final seven. Very strange career and legacy, and hard to summarize - a visionary and a wasted talent both. And let's not even get started on Jeff, who was also hearing his own drummer...

I also just received this and agree that the 2nd concert is not as vital or as well recorded. But I paid about $16 for the 3-CD set, so very happy with hit. Not for audiophiles, but the sound does not detract from the enjoyment, it's fine for the rest of us.

A private recording of Chick Corea/Circle in concert, and it's stunning, great fidelity and more "inside" than when they went off on the Braxton equations, er, compositions, though still very adventurous.

I can live without the Geffen period, but the return to Warner/Reprise brought some great work, and much of it remains officially unreleased. "Rockin' In The Free World" is my all-time favorite Neil Young, and one of my all-time favorites, period.

It's a great set.

In response to an enquiring fan in the ‘Letters to the Editor’ section of his NYA Times-Contrarian section of his website, Neil had the following to say: “May 2019 the NYA V2 CDs and a separate book by Toshi Onuki will be available. Blu Ray is no longer viable for economic reasons. NYA can give you what the blu ray had though, including Hi Res audio. Thanks NY.” The Archives Vol. 1 1963–1972 was issued on three formats: CD (eight discs) and DVD and blu-ray (10 discs apiece). From Neil’s statement it seems clear that both hi-res/video formats have been scrapped and he will concentrate on his new online archives for audiophile quality audio. Volume 2 is expected to span 1972 through 1982.

Gypsy Folk Tales actually has Walter Davis rather than James Williams, but it is a wonderful album.

Serious question - is that true of the Blakey/Messengers "Hold On/ I'm Coming" album? I've never heard that one, always stayed away because it was 11 cuts, 9 of them "hits of the day" 2 or 3 minutes long.

That's a pretty good description of 1977 vs. 1967 in general. Very different albums for very different times. I wouldn't want to be without either album, but there isn't much else from 1977 rock I need, where I need hundreds of other albums from 1967 rock.

Well, Wynton was like 18 when he joined that band and did some great trumpet playing with them before he saw the $$$, er, I mean, light. The semi-bootleg "Live at Bubba's" trilogy is freakin' fantastic, and this one pretty well lives up to its title. BTW, I'm neither dead nor rich, though I'm also not undead or poor either.

Yep. Watson did some great writing for that group - "Time Will Tell", "Wheel Within a Wheel", etc.
