What live music are you going to see tonight?
EKE BBB replied to mikeweil's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Next Friday: Anthony Braxton “Diamond Curtain Wall Trio”: Braxton (saxes, bass clarinet, electronics); Taylor Ho Bynum (trumpet, cornet, flugelhorn) & Mary Halvorson (electric guitar). At the CMU San Juan Evangelista (XXVI Festival de Jazz), Madrid. A few other organissimo members are also going to attend this concert... even coming from the Perfidious Albion. ...... Has anybody heard this ensemble recently? -

jostber lists some Art Tatum audiophile releases here.

I think this CD release (2006) went unnoticed: Art Tatum and Herman Chittison - The remarkable art of Tatum - Tea for two (Audiophile) This issue combines two World Transcription sessions. The Tatum session (11 tracks), under Milt Gabler's supervision, was recorded on January 5, 1944 by the Art Tatum trio with Tiny Grimes and Slam Stewart and was previously issued in an Audiophile LP under the name of "The remarkable Art of Tatum" (AP-88) with less than 27 minutes.

The original "Swingin' With Pee Wee" LP is one of my desert island discs (geez, I love what he does on "Englewood"), and "Portrait Of Pee Wee" is also a very remarkable date. On both dates he shows he was much more a complete musician than the dixieland-type he was ordinarily considered, and that in fact he was much more comfortable with flexible and "modern" rhythm sessions, faraway from the steady rhythm of trad jazz drummers.
-
I'd also love to see his two Honey Dew discs ("Gumbo" and "Hot Licorice", both from 1964) reissued on CD. These two discs come from a pickup date in 1964, where he jams on dixieland numbers with several local musicians from New England.

The one on Columbia is titled New Groove and was reissued on Collectables. The Impulse! is Ask Me Now! I really love the one he did with Henry "Red" Allen: The College Concert of Pee Wee Russell and Henry "Red" Allen which is also on Impulse! and shamefully never reissued on CD to the best of my knowledge. Thanks for this information, jazztrain, I'll be doing some research into tracking this down. Any help on where to find (on-line) a copy of that Japanese CD reissue of "The College Concert" CD? I'd love to have that disc!
-
I finally ordered it through amazon marketplace, for less than 7 EUR. Eagerly waiting to listen to some "fresh" Pee Wee!
-
Anyway, I will get it, since I don't have the original CD issue.

Got the Laubich/Spencer many moons ago. It's a very thorough work... though please note it dates from 1982, and hence it's not updated anymore. A couple of years ago I took the time to cross-check it with the discographical information from the Live Tatum series from Storyville, and IIRC there was some material not listed in Laubich/Spencer. And no CD listings, of course. You still can find it reasonably priced second-hand in some internet stores: Bookfinder search No online discography, to my knowledge. And I am with brownie regarding the possible new remastering for the Solo Masterpieces boxed set. I bet no new remastering has been used.

Thanks for that "advance review", Pete.

Here's a Hank Jones Discography hosted at AAJ: http://www.allaboutjazz.com/php/musician_d...phy.php?id=8166 It's a disc-oriented project (as opposed to session-oriented), listing 492 discs so far. Additions, corrections, comments... can be addressed to this Hank Jones thread at AAJBB.

Last friday I bought a bunch of recent RVG's for 7.95 EUR apiece: -Ike Quebec - Bossa Nova Soul Samba -Baby Face Willette - Face to face -Walter Davis Jr. - Davis Cup -Lou Donaldson - Gravy train -Thad Jones - The magnificent Thad Jones -Duke Jordan - Flight to Jordan
-
Yep, I'm afraid this looks like their new "recycling our catalogue" policy again (as with the Duke Box).
-
Thanks for the info, brownie. Has anyone cared to compare the tracklist from this box set with what was previously available from Storyville and/or other labels?
-
Discs received. Thanks! Best regards, Agustín
