  1. I also love the cover pic, with the Lion dressed on that suit, without any tie, but with his perennial hat and cigar look, and with that cane on his right hand.

  3. Larry, in fact Hodges gave up the soprano on 1940. Legend says that Ellington loved its sound but refused Hodges’ demand that his stipend be doubled for playing it as well as the alto.
  4. With little effort, you can answer yourself by searching here.
  5. FWIW, here´s a link to an illustrated discography of the Prestige Bluesville series.
  6. An absolute masterpiece, IMHO: Alberta Hunter and Victoria Spivey accompanied by Buster Bailey (simply great!), JC Higginbotham on trombone, Cliff Jackson on piano (Victoria Spivey sits in for two tracks), Sidney De Paris on tuba (it´s 1961 but, as in the old times, no contrabass found here) and Zutty Singleton on drums. Lucille Hegamin accompanied by Henry Goodwin on trumpet, Cecil Scott on clarinet, Willie the Lion Smith on piano (his wonderful and almost-impresionistic touch is recognizable even as an accompanist far behind the vocals) and Gene Brooks on drums. Spinning it for the third time today. So once again, thank you Chris Albertson!
