  1. I have had a Harmon Karden CD burner for five years, and have had great results. I have reduced my lp collection by 2/3, by necessity, and have burned most of my favorite ones onto cdr. I am no longer a purist when it comes to lp or vinyl.
  2. Starting tomorrow I am going on a road trip for two weeks. Exotic places like Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Toledo, Chicago, then up to Rochester Minnesota! On the way back I will take a different route, to see the country. And I have packed up a ton of cdr mixes of some faves that I haven't listened to in a while-- John Patton, Larry Young Mosaic, Joe Henderson Live at the Lighthouse, Art Blakey , etc. etc. I am REALLY looking forward to crusing the country with this running in the background.
  3. Recently I have picked up a number of classical lps with this imprint. Red and black Columbia label, with the "Special Products" title on it. They came with a black lp jacket with a hole cut out on one side so you can see the label. On the back it says that this is a product that is meant to carry special reissues of OOP performances -- and not limited to classical, but also jazz and pop. This was meant for collectors and libraries and other educational services. Now, was this like Mosaic, in that they reissue neglected and valuable performances from the past, or did they cater to record fan demand, like the Connoisseurs? And Columbia wasn't the only label -- I found some amazing pieces issued by MGM special Products as well. Did Capitol and RCA do the same thing? And are these the same services that we see working with reissue companies like Mosaic?
  4. How shoddy, Matt? Perhaps up to the mid 90's the remastering hasn't been stellar, but since then I find the reissues to be excellent. And the SACDs that they have been issuing are a great improvement.
  5. New York Stories is outstanding, and deserves to be reissued. Manhattan Project is similar, with a different group. You should look for the Joe Chambers and Pete La Roca cds that were issued in the 90's as well.
  6. Naaah Dan, this is as perfect a box set as it comes. I haven't loved listening to every bit of music since the Mosaic Larry Young and James Brown's Startime. Classic. As for the solo stuff, sure they are live renditions. So? They never appeared on the Faces lps.
  7. I have had no problems burning at 24x, 48x, and 52x speeds, and playing them on different machines. The difference usually is in buying a cheap burner vs. one with a good reputation. I use Pioneer Superdrives made for the Mac.
  8. I like some vocals, but the main reason why I don't listen to jazz vocals in general is that I was exposed to so much of it growing up -- through my parents.

  10. I keep seeing copies at a used cd store that I go to every so often. I'll investigate.....
  11. Sent you an email, Dan. Looking forward to it!
  12. McCoy Tyner - Enlightenment
  13. Jeremy Pelt. DEFINITELY check him out.
  14. Happy Birthday Lon!
  15. Damn. I was waiting for this to happen. This is good in a sense that it will be that much easier to get OOP albums, but on the other hand I think the sound quality of the music will suffer. I could be wrong about that, but isn't the music available from iTunes compressed even more than a cd? Plus we will not get liner notes or session notes, which I do read from time to time. For me it is a mixed blessing. And hasn't most of the albums offered been available in Japan at one time?
  16. Sounds awesome! I wish I could come close to a similar set up like that. A question, though. You notice a lot more background sound and noise from your sources -- the lps and cds and such -- is that necessarily a good thing? The problem I have at times with hi end audio is that when you upgrade on piece, you end up having to upgrade another, and so on.
  17. There was a Hal Galper record he was on in the mid to late 70's -- with Tarumasa Hino, that just explodes, in all the best musical sense. The entire lp is electrifying from start to finish, in no small part to Williams' playing, which to me combined his playing from Lifetime with the Blue Note period. And as far as criticism of his 80's and 90's Blue Note work, I just don't agree. He led a fine jazz group, and while maybe some of it couldn't translate well in a studio enviroment, it is quite clear from the double cd Live in Tokyo date that they were smoking.
  18. I've sold a bunch of Liberty and 70's blue label pressings of Blue Note albums in the past year on ebay. Can I honestly say that they sounded better than the cds I have? No. I'm just tired of the clutter. I will never get rid of my Art Blakey's which are almost all first pressings, but I'm happy to have most of the others on cd. It doesn't lessen my experience of the music.
  19. Finished listening to the set last night. This is the best rock box set out there. Not in chronological order, which is damn refreshing, tons of BBC live tracks, smoking rehersal sessions (which frankly blow away some of the heavy stuff that Led Zeppelin was doing), and even a bunch of Rod Stewart solo tracks. Big thumbs up on this one!!!!!
  20. Hey, here in DC, you consume or drink in the subway system and they'll fine you. Mind you, I have never seen it happen in all my years here. But you get the looks from people if you do that. What they should be doing is busting all the people who get dressed and put on make up in the trains (both acts I have seen). My boss was fined for drinking soda on the train once.
  21. I saw this thread right before going to lunch. I went to my local music store and bought the set, with a coupon I already had. I have to say I hate kulu for starting this thread and peter for bringin it up again and every damn person on this friggin board!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My wallet is a walking zombie from having been bled dry so many damn times! I'm leaving this forum!!!!!!!! The first cd is wonderful, BTW.
  22. There are a few Horace Silver gems from recent years. Jazz Has a Sense of Humor, issued on Verve, is an excellent album, done in the 90's.
  23. That seems right. And before that was the black label with orange circle with impulse and abc on it -- late 60's to early 70's. The original was orange label with black circle.
