  1. The seller claims that the sound quality "to his ears" sounds better than the RCA box. Interesting.......... and probably not true.
  2. Trudy Pitts/Pat Martino Johnny Hammond Smith Rusty Bryant vol 2 Pucho and the Latin Soul Brothers Ivan Boogaloo Jones Ivan Boogaloo Jones vol 2 Idris Muhammad and another organ player whose name escapes me Don't forget Fantasy has issued a lot of cds after this series that are basically more of the same, just without the "Acid Jazz" label.
  3. I have a copy of Soul Connection. This SHOULD be on cd, but it isn't. A fabulous pairing of Grachan Moncur and John Patton -- all the tracks burn!! It is easily one of his best sessions.
  4. I have some of the cds, but I will definitely buy this set! Thanks for the info!
  5. Is this an official MCA Universal release? Or from the Dagger label?
  6. I should bop you all collectively over the head with the metal spine. As long as the music still is available, that is what is most important. Sheesh!
  7. Etc is just brilliant. It's the one I listen to most often.
  8. I believe that came out on cd as well. I'll have to check at home.... Vol 1 and 2 were issued on cd, in the early 90's. First one was a blue cover, the Cachao was a pink cover.
  9. This is essential for everyone who loves latin music. I always come back to playing these cds.
  10. Scavenger, eh Weizen? I have staples from the Buddy DeFranco/Sonny Clark booklet that I can swap......
  11. disc 2, track 4 - Greg Bendian? disc 2, track 5 - bill frissell?
  12. I'll give it a go. Sign me up, please.
  13. Hey I'm laughing all the way to the bank on that one, Weizen! Cha ching! Up for new stuff.
  14. I picked this up from Blue Moon. This is an OUTSTANDING box set! The sound quality is better than the RCA cds I have, though in a couple of cases it sounds like they had to use 78's for a source. The notes are detailed as are the track listings. I highly recommend this for any latin music fan.
  15. I agree with Clinton. Naxos has now quite a few highly rated and award winning recordings. Sound quality is not an issue -- most recordings of the past 5 years are very well done. My favorites are the American Classics series (MacDowell, Barber especially), Spanish Classics (Turina and Rodrigo), and the entire Bax symphonies series.
  16. Ron Horton has a new one out on Fresh Sound. If it is anything like his previous release which came out on Omnitone, it should be very good. Curtis Amy did a very nice session on this label as well -- was it his first one in 20+ years?
  17. I saw (and ordered) this cd from Blue Moon/Planet Music: http://www.freshsoundrecords.com/search.ph...&artist_id=1842 I had it on lp and put it on tape a long time ago, but this is a really nice hard bop session, from Motown, no less! I think this was an attempt by Barry Gordy to do a jazz label. There are a bunch of really interesting Fresh Sound reissues as well, including a Ronnie Scott/Tubby Hayes cd, Complete Coleman Hawkins Jazztone sessions, Warne Marsh, and more. They'll come to Dusty Groove (if they haven't already), but I had to jump on this one.
  18. This past weekend I picked up a double lp set of the John Kirby Sextet "The Biggest Little Band in the Land" on Classic Jazz. I really got into the music -- I really got it because of Charlie Shavers, but everyone is excellent in this group. I was wondering if anyone can make any recommendations that I can go check out?
  19. I LOVE the Criterion dvds, but they are paintful on the wallet. Favorites? Kwaidan, Rashomon, Children of Paradise, Beauty and the Beast. I picked up Ikiru, which was just released. I don't know how many I have, but I started at the beginning of the dvd releases. I have the two John Woo movies -- the Killer and Hard Boiled, which are still very good releases, especially Hard Boiled, which had a TON of extras, including clips from all of this film up to that time (I think 1998), and a student film.
  20. Up for revision.
  21. If it is a cd of the same tracks, why bother making this set?
  22. It's been a while since I heard it, but I know it is very good. The killer though is the double lp, Music Written for Monterey, a separate session, which is KILLER!
