  1. Yes, found it on Jazzmatazz.
  2. Preordered. That and the Art Pepper. I may be poor, but I will have these guys lifting my spirits......
  3. What be this? Various Artists - Detroit Jazz Before Motown, 1945-53 (Uptown) Aug 1 — rare and previously unissued recordings featuring Wardell Gray, Barry Harris, Tommy Flanagan, Kenny Burrell, Willie Anderson and others; compiled by Jim Gallert and Lars Bjorn, authors of Before Motown: A History of Jazz in Detroit, 1920-1960 (University of Michigan Press)
  4. Listened to this one last night. A complete knockout!
  5. Between that and Lift Every Voice.
  6. I always thought the 45s had the sound boosted, to give it that punch. Also the mastering for the 45s were different, and superior -- isn't that a reason why certain audiophile companies did 1/2 spped and 45 rpm masterings of certain lps?
  7. patricia, It's getting harder and harder to find good old jazz for a $1 a piece, even at yard sales. However I live in the DC area, so it is really dog eat dog when it comes to estate sales and such. Everybody has a connection........ which is why I no longer bother with yard sales. S
  8. Dave Burns - both Vanguard lps Wagner - Ring Cycle (music for mad artists and dreary winter weather!)
  9. 1995. My friend Michael H (who used to frequent the old BNBB), told me about the Sam Rivers set, as I was really a big fan of his music (and still am). Got it, liked it, and kept on going. I was lucky to snag the Freddie Redd, Tina Brooks and Don Cherry sets, as they were OOP, from people who just didn't care for the sets. This was done on the internet just before ebay came around.
  10. Alfie is an incredible record. I am also with those who recommend the Bridge and Meets Coleman Hawkins.
  11. I love the snow. I love it even more that I live in a condo deep in the heart of DC. Unfortunately, I had to run up to my family's place in the 'burbs and shovel the @#$%!! driveway one final time, before they move down to Williamsburg. This driveway is 1/4 mile long. #$@%%^!!!!!
  12. Late last week I ordered both the Jimmy Smith Blue Note retrospective box and the Miles Davis Seven Steps box. Given the holiday on Monday, and the inauguration on Thursday, which interrupted the mail flow because I live near the capitol building, I received both sets yesterday. No BMG markings in the bar code or anything -- great!
  13. Hey Matt, congratulations! Tell me how the ol station is doing -- I was a dee jay there back in the early 90's. I have been to the new student union building, and they are located in the basement there. Is it still free form or have the ethereal/experimental junkies taken over?
  14. I think what you are talking about is more of the awareness of the collectors and the guys who are behind the counter. Having been on the "other side," as a buyer for a used book/record store, I quickly became aware of most of the artists and labels, and could distinguish an auctionable item and one that could go out in the bins. I'm sure the guys at Jerry's know exactly what is coming in, and how to sell them. And there are collectors who seem to know when to come in -- several times a week, hit the bins and leave. It's not like 10 or 15 years ago when you can go to a store and explore, and hope to find something rare or unusual. In Jerry's case the store is so big it is too easy to hide auction lps somewhere and buy it later on. They are all about turning it over, and fast. I agree that smaller stores are where one can find something -- I was up at Jerry's in late August, and didn't find a thing that interested me. But they are definitely not hurting. What hurts is our chances of buying something cool in the bins, and that's just a change in how records are being sold.
  15. Leeway, They have been doing auctions since I went to school at Carnegie Mellon, back in the late 80's - early 90's. First it was a mailing list, then they switched over to ebay. I like them as well, and I don't think this route hurts them at all. Jerry always treats his customers right, and keeps a well organized stock. Like any used record store, he is as good as what he has coming in from sellers. The auctions keep the money coming in == nothing wrong with that.
  16. I was wondering when you were going to discover that store! It is an amazing store -- the vinyl never seems to stop coming in.
  17. Not that I wouldn't grab the vinyl if I had a chance, but it also came out as a 4 cd set as well, which I found at a used record store for $18. Great music, regardless.
  18. Dakota Staton. Yeah yeah, I have been listening to her lps a lot recently, but it would fit into Mosaic's mission statement of bringing recognition to good yet forgotten artists. She's a great singer.
  19. Yawn now but man is Apple going to make good this year!
  20. Kagemusha is slated for release by Criterion in February or March. I've been waiting for this one for a while! Not as good as Ran, but impressive, nevertheless.
  21. Stampers became an issue when die hard collectors began to compare different copies of the same lp -- I forget, but a known example is the guy who compiled a booklet of RCA Living Stereo shaded dog labels in the 80's. Even by 1990 shaded dogs were a dime a dozen, until some word got around that vinyl wasn't all THAT bad, in fact, pretty damn good, so the hunt was on.
  22. That's all you found at Second Story? I went in this morning and grabbed two Dakota Staton Capitol lps, Idris Muhammad Kudu date, Flora Purim's 500 Miles High, Manitas de Plata 3 lp box (awesome flamenco player), Bobby Hutcherson's Waiting on Blue Note, and Jack DeJohnette's Special Edition with Arthur Blythe and David Murray. Cool! And nabbed the Charlie Parker Verve box set.

    iPod

Does your laptop have a firewire port? If so, then you can get a cable to connect your ipod to the laptop. If not, then yes, you would have to get a USB 2.0 card to install.
  24. I have to admit I am not the biggest Jazz Vocal fan. But I listened to The Late Late Show by Dakota Staton last night (a late xmas gift), and was enthralled by her voice. I haven't heard a voice quite like hers, though one could say there's a dab of Dinah Washington and some Ella mixed in, but it is different. So, after looking online, with the exception of two Capitol albums reissued by Collectables (both reportedly to have horrendous sound), an import two fer, and the Storyville date, that's pretty much it for reissues from that early period. Does anyone have her work on Capitol and on United Artists? Please PM me.
  25. All the Savoy/Arista 70's lps are worth getting, especially for the notes and the sound quality, which in many cases have yet to be bested by cd reissues.
