  1. It’s sold out now. Maybe I made a mistake not ordering it...
  2. https://www.udiscovermusic.com/stories/amazing-photograph-jazz-history/ I've only seen two in person, the two who happen to be the last men standing today, Benny Golson and Sony Rollins. Coincidentally, both are tenor players.

Not facetious, just not a surf music connoisseur. I also see there were The Eagles too.

THE Wailers of Bob Marley fame? On the same bill with the surf dudes?! You were lucky to see the last original Ventures, man.
  5. Thanks for the review.
  6. I played Disc 1 twice yesterday. It's captivating. Looking forward to discussing the music. Her Ellington interpretations are so refreshingly-original. The Beatles cut...I guess it was a tribute to an immensely-popular hit. Even trying to inject some individualism into what everyone was covering then is commendable. And sexy. I hadn't listened to the lyrics of the Hard Day's Night until she sang it. She made it sound quite erotic. The service was awesome also. I got mine within a couple of days of ordering. They also sent a free bonus disk of Persian music, which i haven't played yet..
  7. What do the black lines represent on this diagram? Like the very top end of voices, and the very low end of tuba.
  8. I tried to play this - , but it sounded very poor, muffled and just generally crappy, so I figured out it was the speakers. Turns out both 2.5 amp tweeter fuses are blown. I recently played a test cd with pink noise, I don't know if that's what did it. I cranked it up all the way, hoping I could hear at 12kHz. I hope it's just the fuses. Anyway, just picked up the above LP by Roland Hanna and George Mraz - ROMANESQUE . It's probably very good.
  9. You will not regret it. It’s a feast for the ears and the brain. I’ve just listened to the first 10 songs from disc 1, and it’s everything you’d hope it to be..something quite different!

Who plays the trumpet on Dale's Miserlou? It sounds Latin American to me. Speaking of the surf rock, I was contemplating seeing The Ventures here last year, but they are more like a cover band now, even though some of the current band members have played with Don Wilson and Nokie Edwards.
  12. Went to see an ENT for an audiology exam, had my ears cleaned [one had a huge wax ball, which looked disgusting, the other ear had very little...don't know why such a disparity]. Sadly, their unit only measures up to 8kHz, so I went ahead and bought a test cd with pink noise up to 20kHz. So now I know I can't hear beyond 11kHz. Would be interesting to know what's hiding in those upper frequencies, but that's not an option for me. All in all I'm satisfied with the results, considering that my work involves close proximity to high-pitched noise for 30+ hours per week. Highly recommend having your ears professionally-cleaned yearly!! I can definitely hear the difference now.
  13. My trolling mechanism? You’ve got to be joking Jimbo. Everyone who read this article will think of what I wrote. You including.
  14. He wouldn’t just fake your kids’ water polo skills and pump up their SAT scores — college admissions scammer William “Rick” Singer could also fake your kid’s race. As part of his larger scheme to get low-performing rich kids into top colleges, Singer would sometimes falsify students’ ethnicities to give them an affirmative action advantage, according to a little-reported detail from his guilty plea before a federal judge in Boston. https://nypost.com/2019/03/15/alleged-college-scam-mastermind-even-faked-kids-ethnicities-docs-reveal/
  15. I’d be surprised if it played anywhere other than at some peripheral festivals , and maybe in an art cinema or two. BN would be smart to stream it from their website. I’d pay $10 to watch it at home.
  16. https://bluenoterecords-film.com/en/watch/#cinemas I don’t see any showings at the movies in this US at this time.

  19. You have my word, sir!
  20. U.S. college admissions scandal sparks $500 billion lawsuit http://news.trust.org/item/20190314135743-dob9p Jennifer Kay Toy, a former teacher in Oakland, California, said she believed her son Joshua was not admitted to some colleges, despite his 4.2 grade point average, because wealthy parents thought it was "ok to lie, cheat, steal and bribe their children's way into a good college." I thought 4.0 is the top. 4.2...is it like 11 on the Spinal Tap scale? Still stand by the Hollywood do-gooder label...until the full list of those involved comes around. If these three are an exception, will happily issue a formal mea culpa.
  21. WTF does this have to do with Trump?! This payoff scheme has been going on for years. Projection, anyone?
  22. Nice, good for you to finally find it.Thanks for the back cover pic. I'm confused by Gitler's descrition of Berman's cause of death. First he writes that it was air embolism, then that it was hard drugs. Also, the photo is listed as Schlitten's. What a precocious lad...must've been 14 when he took it.
  23. I read it, and I think the title is more interesting than the content. In this case we are not dealing with the value placed on education to further someone's success later in life, like he describes in the 'good old boys' adage, but in education as a token indicator of wealth and prestige. Narcissistic parents view their children as an extension of themselves, and pony up to hundreds of thousands to circumvent the regular admissions process, imho akin to paying hundreds of thousands to plastic surgeons to circumvent the appearance of ageing. The difference is that having a nose job or a butt-job is legal and not frowned upon, and if these parents could openly pay for their children to attend college for way more than regular admission costs, they definitely would. They are just not wealthy enough to give a few million to donate to Yale and their kid is in by proxy, but they do have up to $500k to give someone with a proven track record of getting things done. That's why seeing that Kimmel lady on the list is weird. For her, and a couple of other really-really wealthy individuals it could be just proverbial greed. She was gonna save a couple of million...didn't quite work out.
  24. Never seen this one. Can't find audio on-line either. What's it like? Jazz, stylized klezmer, or authentic ? Cover is very Xanadu-like.
