Some candidates for a genius status suggested here, reminded me of a quote from a genius writer - "...We were placing laurels on lice-ridden heads."

The first RTF album is genius. Pure genius. Can one not be a genius and write/play/record genius music?

Prediction - this will be a big one, when it comes out on November 22. I bought the advanced copy when I went to their concert a couple of weeks ago. The music is phenomenally good. It's a 2-cd set, and the best new release I've heard in years. How Lionel Loueke produces the sound he does from his guitar, I can't describe. He sounds like a keyboard player, and his singing fits perfectly with whatever Corea's concept is for this band. A very good evening of music from Buster Williams & the quartet. This was my first time hearing Lenny White live. A remarkable drummer, a giant of his instrument, really. Not a fan of George Colligan, to my ear Chick Corea was a major influence; not that it's a bad thing,. This was also my introduction to Bruce Williams [Buster's relation?], who substituted for Steve Wilson, and quite masterfully. Epistrophy was a nice, juicy icing on the cake, that consisted mainly from originals. If anyone wants to know the set list, I wrote it down. It's a bit of a schlep for me, 80 miles each way, but it was well-worth it. The location is perfect, literally a few hundred feet from the I-95. Next time will get there earlier to catch a dinner before the show. The club itself is just small enough not to be cramped. The acoustics are terrific. It's interesting that you pay for both sets, there is no option for paying just for one. Sets were about 50 min long.

Kevin, Golson will do more talking than playing. I don't think his chops allow for blowing much any more. Jimmy Heath still does it. Saw him a few months ago in that Sonny Rollins tribute concert I wrote about, and he did as well, or better than any ninety-year old out there.

For waht it's worth, from reading the linked material, I got an impression that Mingus came to Bradley's in his dying days just to hear Fred Hersch play.

The sacd doesn't sound that great either, nor does the original vinyl [both recollections are from memory; haven't played this title in years].

Yes, I will definitely check out the rec league. There's a local indoor facility that offers those. I feel pretty comfortable as a sweeper or fullback. The only position I wold say I probably dislike playing the most is an offensive midfielder/play-maker. Just not good enough, period. The public doesn't realize how much responsibility, talent and confidence is involved with that, since the forwards are the ones who take all the laurels. I'm definitely on board with what you wrote about pass vs. goal. A beautiful, well-placed pass has a lot more aesthetic appeal to me than a run of the mill goal. I appreciate how you've attempted to arrange structure to the definition. And yes, like others, I'm definitely on board with accepting 'useful AND enjoyable' as critical, and thank you for cataloging that! The name that has not been mentioned yet [surprisingly to me] is Bill Evans. He did not invent the format, but, in my opinion, became THE most influential pianist and interpreter of music of the last 50 years. To me, he fills all the boxes of genius. Would you agree or disagree? Everybody and their uncle still tries to copy his style and approach, some quite successfully, others just annoyingly.

Is there any strong language in the film? Asking because I'm considering hosting a screening, and can't find the film rating on producer's website.

Within the realm of this genre, which musicians and composers would you label as geniuses, and why? What are your criteria for a musical genius?

I suspect that there are musicians proper, i.e. those that can carry a tune, and those individuals who use the sounds they produce out of musical instruments to "express themselves", and are otherwise incapable of playing actual music, or can play on rudimentary level.

Thank you for your take on this. My experience is not nearly as extensive as yours, I only play pick-up games. One group is mostly kids in their 20s; I fell in with them through the meetup app. That's a lot of fun, because I know I can't compete speed and endurance-wise, so I play smart. Another group I play with is almost exclusively composed of the older local Portuguese guys from the Azores. Lovely, friendly people, great tactical players, but some are very hot-blooded. Yesterday was the first time I witnessed fisticuffs. One guy intentionally smacked another on the shin [according to the victim, for the 4th time] , he retaliated with a punch, knocked him down, then the first guy's brother got into it. We're talking of people in their 50s. Of course, we broke them apart, but this is just to appraise you of how this can get. Anyway, often times i feel intimidated and too self-aware when I play with them. The expectations are high, especially from an outsider like me; a couple of them just don't pass to me, period. So I know I've got to relax somehow.
