What live music are you going to see tonight?
Dmitry replied to mikeweil's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
I will possibly make the Buster Williams show, if its not sold out. Haven’t been to the Side Door yet. He is also appearing there tomorrow. -
Kevin, Golson will do more talking than playing. I don't think his chops allow for blowing much any more. Jimmy Heath still does it. Saw him a few months ago in that Sonny Rollins tribute concert I wrote about, and he did as well, or better than any ninety-year old out there.

Fred Hersch/Mingus (NYT)
Dmitry replied to Mark Stryker's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
For waht it's worth, from reading the linked material, I got an impression that Mingus came to Bradley's in his dying days just to hear Fred Hersch play. -
The sacd doesn't sound that great either, nor does the original vinyl [both recollections are from memory; haven't played this title in years].

Yes, I will definitely check out the rec league. There's a local indoor facility that offers those. I feel pretty comfortable as a sweeper or fullback. The only position I wold say I probably dislike playing the most is an offensive midfielder/play-maker. Just not good enough, period. The public doesn't realize how much responsibility, talent and confidence is involved with that, since the forwards are the ones who take all the laurels. I'm definitely on board with what you wrote about pass vs. goal. A beautiful, well-placed pass has a lot more aesthetic appeal to me than a run of the mill goal. It is sort of an art, when it comes out right. Have a look at this kid. https://www.theguardian.com/football/2017/oct/24/alessando-cupini-roma-us-soccer-sensation-social-media

Interested in your used sets in excellent shape. Got set 2. Looking for the other four series.

I appreciate how you've attempted to arrange structure to the definition. And yes, like others, I'm definitely on board with accepting 'useful AND enjoyable' as critical, and thank you for cataloging that! The name that has not been mentioned yet [surprisingly to me] is Bill Evans. He did not invent the format, but, in my opinion, became THE most influential pianist and interpreter of music of the last 50 years. To me, he fills all the boxes of genius. Would you agree or disagree? Everybody and their uncle still tries to copy his style and approach, some quite successfully, others just annoyingly.

Is there any strong language in the film? Asking because I'm considering hosting a screening, and can't find the film rating on producer's website.

The waitress at the diner just called me a honey, and a cashier at the gas station mentioned that she liked my hair. Do I feel violated, lost and hurt...or what? Help. -
Within the realm of this genre, which musicians and composers would you label as geniuses, and why? What are your criteria for a musical genius?

Week three, and still no formal charges against Harv. Keep digging. -
I suspect that there are musicians proper, i.e. those that can carry a tune, and those individuals who use the sounds they produce out of musical instruments to "express themselves", and are otherwise incapable of playing actual music, or can play on rudimentary level.

Thank you for your take on this. My experience is not nearly as extensive as yours, I only play pick-up games. One group is mostly kids in their 20s; I fell in with them through the meetup app. That's a lot of fun, because I know I can't compete speed and endurance-wise, so I play smart. Another group I play with is almost exclusively composed of the older local Portuguese guys from the Azores. Lovely, friendly people, great tactical players, but some are very hot-blooded. Yesterday was the first time I witnessed fisticuffs. One guy intentionally smacked another on the shin [according to the victim, for the 4th time] , he retaliated with a punch, knocked him down, then the first guy's brother got into it. We're talking of people in their 50s. Of course, we broke them apart, but this is just to appraise you of how this can get. Anyway, often times i feel intimidated and too self-aware when I play with them. The expectations are high, especially from an outsider like me; a couple of them just don't pass to me, period. So I know I've got to relax somehow.

Approximately when did CC get into Scientology? Edit:Just read this on his FB page. Scientology Under the "special thanks" notes, found in all of his later albums, Corea mentions that L. Ron Hubbard, founder of Scientology, has been a continual source of inspiration. In 1968 Corea discovered Dianetics, Hubbard's principal work, and in the early 1970s developed an interest in Hubbard's science fiction novels. The two exchanged letters until Hubbard's death in 1986, and Corea even had three guest appearances on Hubbard's 1982 album Space Jazz: The Soundtrack of the Book Battlefield Earth, noting, "[Hubbard] was a great composer and keyboard player as well. He did many, many things. He was a true Renaissance Man."[2] Corea claimed that Scientology became a profound influence on his musical direction in the early 1970s: I no longer wanted to satisfy myself. I really want to connect with the world and make my music mean something to people. [9] In 1998 Chick Corea and fellow entertainers Anne Archer, Isaac Hayes, and Haywood Nelson attended the 30th anniversary of Freedom Magazine, the Church of Scientology's investigative news journal, at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., to honor 11 human rights activists.[10] Also, a good interview with AAJ from 13 years ago. He opens up about Scientology. Looks like he is a happy disciple. https://www.allaboutjazz.com/chick-corea-chick-corea-by-ty-cumbie.php?page=1&width=1024

Thanks for your reply, Jim. You're an interesting cat, so many diverse interests...from antiques to soccer. I also used to watch futbol on the Spanish language channels when I first moved to the US in the late 80s. I had no idea how not-popular the sport was, and still am amazed that it has not taken a foothold it deserves, despite millions of kids playing at schools or in leagues. Our town is considered 'the' soccer town in this little joke of a State, but we don't have a turf field, and the multiple grass fields resemble pastures. Let me ask you, in your decades of playing pick-up games, how did you get ready psychologically prior to the kick-off? Or just showed up and put the cleats on?

Watched THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN for the first time. I already knew the plot, more or less, from the Seven Samurai. I can see how this became an international best-seller. The story is a feel-good story, there's a lot of shooting and some improbable marksmanship, and the good unequivocally tumps the evil. Also, not knowing the plot exactly, I was expecting to see some indians, but it was the gunslingers/cowboys against Mexican bandits. I'm not sure of the locale, I'm presuming it's on the Arizona/Mexico border? I f I was faced with a choice of The Searchers vs. The Seven, The Searchers is a much better film imho. The score to The Seven is very-very good.

Well, I went, but I didn't ask. Chick didn't pick me. This Q&A lasted about 40 minutes, and was recorded by WGBH pbs tv, and is on their FB page now. https://www.facebook.com/WGBHMusicChannel/ Kind of generic questions, and oblique answers. I was gonna ask him what music he plays at home, when and if he practices, and the question about his lack of movie scoring credits. To my amazement people were as much, if not more, in awe of Steve Gadd. Oh, and even after decades, CC still haven't lost that Boston accent, which becomes more noticeable the longer he speaks. The concert rocked. Steve Gadd sounds like 2 drummers playing at the same time. My first time seeing him live, as well as Corea. Corea's playing behind the soloing musicnas is so impeccable and organic, that it disappears and kinda becomes one with the solo...perhaps someone can describe it better. NB: Wanted to paste the names of the other musicians in the band, went on CC's website...his production company's address - 411 Cleveland St. #215 Clearwater, FL 33755 Then, remembering that Scientology is based in Clearwater, I google their address - 503 Cleveland St Clearwater, FL 33756 Hi, Neighbor!

I can't disagree. There's definitely a palpable air of entitlement there, an aplomb. Harry Kane is a phenomenal footballer, by far the best in this English generation imho. He's got everything- skill, speed, intuition. I really enjoy watching him play.
