  1. The thought had crossed my mind... But the scarf is just a too monochromatic for my lady. BTW, you were spot on. Varvatos' scarves sell for $75-$90.
  2. I trust what Osby says more than an a member of the second oldest profession who wrote the BG pliece. Unless proven otherwise. Would you believe that it was Osby's Mindgames playing in the Moscow hotel room when a couple of Russian hookers were peeing on the bed in which the then president had slept?
  3. You believe everything you read in the media?
  4. You are gonna love it. I've played my copy 7 or 8 times already. This rendition of the Return to Forever sounds just as fresh as the original did in 1971. Corea's use of a male vocalist hits the mark, and the sound spectrum of contemporary keyboards on all the tracks really took it home for me. It's definitely not album for the jazz purists. I've also been listening to his VIGIL album. It's amazing how much a different drummer can bring into the band.
  5. From the article: Osby, in an hourlong interview with the Globe, disputed the woman’s claims. Then they proceed to quote about two sentences of his. If they conducted an hour-long interview, they better print it. I'm of the opinion that in this country you are still innocent, unless PROVEN guilty.
  6. Actually, if I got this set from my wife as a Christmas or b-day present, I would've been like WOW. But I won't... Whatcha got for fishing jazz tunes? And don't bring up Kurt Weil!
  7. That's what he said. Paragraph three.
  8. What's a thread without Jim posting a comic strip, photo, or other visual aid?! That's right, it's just a thread.
  9. The Mahavishnu jam. I took some shots from my seat.
  10. When he wasn't whirling, he was waving album covers at the stage. I'm assuming they were Mahavishnu records, but who knows. I'm just glad he wasn't directly in front of me.
  11. Awesome show yesterday, scripted just as Ed had described. This was the longest set of music I've ever paid for - well north of 3 hours. I ended up buying the concert poster for the Cranston/Boston shows. Very psychedelic. They produce a poster for every two gigs, and they are all different. I think they print 100 copies of each, each hand-numbered.. You guys, whoever had tickets for their upcoming shows, are in for a real treat. The only thing I found axcessive is Jimmy Herring's drummer playing every single piece of hardware he has, and ending every song with beating on a big effin gong. BTW, based on my eyewitness account, this is what an average attendee of yesterday's concert looks like. One dude yesterday took it one step further. Imagine the guy in the photo below taking his cloths off and doing the whirling dervish dance for a couple of hours. Yes, I got it on film.
  12. If an 18 y.o. Is getting a gallon-sized box of Weather Report, they are not average anything. Unless the gift giver is making a statement...
  13. Obviously I wasn’t describing the second coolest kid in Benelux, but some average eighteen year old.
  14. Teenagers don’t listen to albums, they play individual songs. Who the hell gives a 15 cd set of any one thing to a 18 y.o.?! if it comes to that decision, just buy an iTunes or amazon gift card.
  15. You can’t think this was the right thing, as opposed to exposing a teenager to a world beyond those two? Disagree?
  16. A developing mind needs to hear a variety of musical styles and artists to form a personality, not 15 cds of the music by the same band.
  17. Ed, so many thanks for the concert review! I’ve got my ticket for this Sunday’s concert here in lil Rhody, had it for weeks now. Show is sold out. Reading you makes me very excited!!! This is billed as McLaughlin’s farewell tour. I’m not familiar with the other guy. What do you recommend to get myself warmed up to his music?
  18. Tell us more! Was that a recording session?
  19. Some candidates for a genius status suggested here, reminded me of a quote from a genius writer - "...We were placing laurels on lice-ridden heads."
  20. The first RTF album is genius. Pure genius. Can one not be a genius and write/play/record genius music?
  21. Prediction - this will be a big one, when it comes out on November 22. I bought the advanced copy when I went to their concert a couple of weeks ago. The music is phenomenally good. It's a 2-cd set, and the best new release I've heard in years. How Lionel Loueke produces the sound he does from his guitar, I can't describe. He sounds like a keyboard player, and his singing fits perfectly with whatever Corea's concept is for this band. I'd love to see them again, but no more US tour dates for this band; the European fans have a chance to see them still. Don't miss it, folks! http://chickcorea.com/concerts/#.WfnBnmhSzcs .
  22. A very good evening of music from Buster Williams & the quartet. This was my first time hearing Lenny White live. A remarkable drummer, a giant of his instrument, really. Not a fan of George Colligan, to my ear Chick Corea was a major influence; not that it's a bad thing,. This was also my introduction to Bruce Williams [Buster's relation?], who substituted for Steve Wilson, and quite masterfully. Epistrophy was a nice, juicy icing on the cake, that consisted mainly from originals. If anyone wants to know the set list, I wrote it down. It's a bit of a schlep for me, 80 miles each way, but it was well-worth it. The location is perfect, literally a few hundred feet from the I-95. Next time will get there earlier to catch a dinner before the show. The club itself is just small enough not to be cramped. The acoustics are terrific. It's interesting that you pay for both sets, there is no option for paying just for one. Sets were about 50 min long.
