  1. Thanks Bev - I see you do have to do it by the tags, though I'm encouraged that you can invent your own genres if you feel like it. And it seems that you have to do it when you shove it into the ipod; you can't do this when you're ripping - I'm not using itunes for ripping, because there are no instructions and it's an incomprehensible programme - i rip stuff and can never find it afterwards. So I'm using Windows Media Player and will have to shove the stuff, willy-nilly, into the ipod when I get it. MG

  3. I've started ripping a bunch of CDs to my hard drive, in preparation for gettig an ipod. But I think I've found a problem that hasn't been mentioned. When I have hundreds of albums on an ipod, I'll want to find them all organised the way I want them: Mbalax ... Artist 1 ...... Album 1 ...... Album 2 ... Artist 2 ...... Album 1 ...... Album 2 ... Artist 3 ...... Album 1 ...... Album 2 Blues ... Artist 1 ...... Album 1 ...... Album 2 ... Artist 2 ...... Album 1 ...... Album 2 ... Artist 3 ...... Album 1 ...... Album 2 Djeliya ... Artist 1 ...... Album 1 ...... Album 2 ... Artist 2 ...... Album 1 ...... Album 2 ... Artist 3 ...... Album 1 ...... Album 2 and so on. I achieve this by creating different folders on my disc. But I have a horrible feeling that the ipod won't let me do that; that it will insist that the genres are what it finds in the "genre" tag and the artists are what it finds in the "artist" tag. And as far as genres are concerned, the seven or so different broad genres of music from Africa that I have are all "World music" to the system; and there seems to be no distinction between Swing, Soul Jazz, Bebop, New Orleans or Avant Garde - it's all jazz. Well, yes, it's all jazz, but that's not helpful in trying to find something. And, moreover, Red Garland is not the same artist as The Red Garland Trio (and would therefore be sorted into a different place). I'm sure there's a way of getting around this - so, before I go too far to retag everything, what is it? MG
  4. Try "Shake rattle & roll" by Joe Turner - with Connie Kay on drums. Now THERE'S a Rock drummer! MG

  8. Bananarama Carmen Miranda Generalissimo Manuel Noriega It's too early in the morning. I didn't notice that earlier MG
  9. So, was it "Summertime"? Or was that just a quote? There's no tracklist on AMG. Oh yes - a wide variety of music under Davis' belt. Some others: Ray Bryant - Slow Freight Shirey Scott - Mystical lady Grover Washington Jr - Soul box Lou Donaldson - Rough house blues; Sophisticated Lou Reuben Wilson - Set us free David Newman - Bigger & Better; Many facets of Jimm Smith & Wes Montgomery - Dynamic duo; Further adventures Eddie Harris - Silver cycles Jimmy Forrest - Soul Street And he was in Willis Jackson's band in the fifties, recording, I think, for Atlantic. But is what you're saying that the track you selected is not representative of the album as a whole? MG
  10. Gotta be Richard Davis. Just gotta be. It's the taste, the tremendous control of the instrument, and the willingness to take more than a few chances. Not to mention the beautiful bow sound. That is correct. Richard Davis was 77 years old when he recorded this solo. Now we need the album. Must be this one But Junior Mance's collaboration is a surprise to me. MG
  11. Me too. However, there's not much you can do about CDs bought online. If so, then they work! Those four CDs I bought took half an hour to open and the gummy strips wrecked the jewel cases. DVDs from the US have those strips on, too. On one DVD I bought, the paper cover liner had slipped inside the Amaray case before the sticker was applied, so the sticker couldn't be removed without tearing the cover. Essentially those strips force you to wreck the thing you have just bought. Not good. I use the old finger roll technique, and that usually works pretty well to remove those things quickly. I just peel back a corner then start rolling my fingers underneath it to slowly peel it away from the case. Still some glue residue left, but the strips usually roll back and away from the jewel case pretty quickly. And, as I've explained before - to EVERYONE'S disgust - if you rub your thumb behind your ear and get it a bit greazy, it's even more effective. :rsmile: MG
  12. Millions of cassettes are still being sold in Africa - that's all most people can afford (most of my African albums are on K7). So the means of playing them will continue at least until Africa's prosperity advances to the point where most people are buying CDs. That'll take a little while, I expect. Don't be so glum about the prospects. MG
  13. Oh yes! Happy Birthday Bill! MG
  14. Aynsley Sly - a different drummer MG Oh, I didn't expect them ALL to come up!

  16. Pretty well any computer shop that sells blank CD-R or DVD disks, I imagine. MG Well, I can get plastic ones there, but they don't have the paper. I'd like to find ones similar to the paper sleeves used (for example) in the mini-LP reissue of the Gryce/Byrd Jazzlab at Newport recording. Bertrand. Funny - I can't get the plastic ones here - I wish I could. MG

  18. Young is on Von's album "Doin' it right now" on Atlantic. He's also on George's album "New improved funk" (Groove Merchant), on which Von plays. Despite the title, there is a lot of interesting stuff on this. MG
