  2. Chuck pointed out that the cover of Willis Jackson's "Bar wars" reissued on 32Jazz was actually a photo (reversed) of Von Freeman. It was taken from the sleeve of the Willis & Von album "Lockin' horns", reversed, and the wrong musician picked. Joel Dorn did a few good ones, not limited to 32Jazz. He certainly should have known better on this one. In the notes to David Newman's "Captain Buckles", reissued (briefly) on Label M, he says that "Captain Buckles" was his way of making things right with David, after "The weapon", which he describes as one of the worst examples of a producer overstepping his bounds in the history of record making. Nice confession, but "Captain Buckles" was recorded BEFORE "The weapon". I omit all mention of a certain label that produces poorly packaged 4CD sets at astonishingly cheap prices, replete with more errors than the mind of man can contain. I think this thread should focus on firms who are supposed to know what they're doing (so Columbia shouldn't be included, either ) MG
  3. I thought he was the composer. He's listed as the composer on his own version of the tune on "Step one". Who was listed as composer on Jimmy Smith's vinyl edition of the album? MG PS The tune has also been recorded by Al Cohn & Zoot Sims, listing McGriff as composer. And McGriff recorded it again in 1984 ("Sky walk").
  4. There is, of course, one HUGE facet to the work of this band - that is that the profits (plus a few films) enabled Fantasy to buy Prestige, Riverside, Pablo, Contemporary, Specialty, Milestone, Stax etc etc, thus assembling the greatest bunch of black music under one roof. Fantasy RIP. MG

  11. Ah! The water's back on now - an hour and forty minutes earlier than the last forecast! Oh, the relief! MG
  12. It's been freezing here for days. Burst water main somewhere in the area affected the whole of Tonyrefail. I noticed we had no water about 2PM (now nearly 9PM). Welsh Water said we'd be back on by 8PM, but their latest message says not until midnight! And the problem's extended to Porth now. Fortunately we had a few bottles of water, so cooking was possible. Dishwasher full MG
  13. Mine turned up today! Thanks Jim. Much enjoyment here! MG
  14. YAY! Got the three Root Doctor albums today!!! Thanks Jim! And very nice they are, too. I have a bit of a preference for the more modern, soul-style numbers - I think the band is a lot more relaxed on those. But I enjoyed all of all of them! MG

  18. I think with Zavvi, HMV and Woolworths going, there are three options for any large town but London: 1 WH Smith expands its record sections, or creates new ones (there's no record section in the main Cardiff shop) - this is hard to imagine and not possible in most locations; 2 other indie shops start up on the basis that one small shop (with a strange clientele, which most of the indies have had to cultivate in order to stay alive) can't supply the whole of the regional shopping need (for as long as it lasts); 3 people really do get down to internet buying and downloading. I think 2 and 3 will happen; 2 as a temporary burst of activity until 3 rules the kingdom But just imagine how hard it will become for the majors to engineer hits without the big retailers to help push them... MG
  19. In '69 I was running a small record shop in a shopping mall and providing music for the mall's PA system. I played a lot of CCR; I could definitely stand it; people liked it; they didn't like Lonnie Smith's "Think" or Lou's "Say it loud" (or James Brown's); they'd have preferred Doors, the Mothers or MC5. So CCR was the best compromise available. They were very good at what they did. MG
