  1. Thanks for that - I think Randy Johnston is the best guitarist for Lou nowadays. A LOT more right than Peter Bernstein. And I loved the last verse, where Lou, as usual, dreamed he was in the White House and Bush waked in and Lou says, "I don't wanna see you; messin' up my social security!" Now, I had a dream like that one a couple of weeks ago. It was so effin' STUPID that, in my dream, I said, "what the hell am I wasting my time dreaming of this for? I should be dreaming of music, or having sex with an extremely accommodating young lady! I'm not going put up with this rubbish! I'm going to wake up!" And I did. MG

  8. Those might be rare. Nah! Back in the sixties, I had a colleague who SERIOUSLY maintained that he had the Bolden cylinder, but it was up in his attic and he couldn't be asked to get it down and show it to us MG

  13. I've got a few 78s, but I only play them when I REALLY want to. I don't have the room for a dedicated 78 deck, so I have to: change the speed on my deck to 45; remove the turntable; move the belt up to the other gear; turn it on to make sure the belt doesn't slip back into its accustomed position; replace the turntable; remove the LP stylus - quite hard, as it's tight; replace it with a 78 stylus - because it doesn't get used often, this is a VERY tight fit; put the record on; start up again - usually, it doesn't want to go with a heavy 78 on it - I have to push start it play the record. And afterwards, I have to reverse the process and NOT forget to change the speed back to 33 But last week, I REALLY wanted to play a 78 by the Swan Silvertones that I didn't have on LP, so I did all that! 14. I wouldn't want this guy looking over MY tax returns, Chris. Downright DANGEROUS! MG
  15. Anyone know the answer to this? New ones appear virtually every day. Is this Chronological Classics putting out their discs in a new way or a blatant case of copy and paste? Doesn't matter, does it? The music's out of copyright (in Europe). This might persuade me. MG Without treading once more into this minefield... It just seems a pity if the people who put the series together didn't have first shot at its download version. The trouble is, they have little else to offer - the Jazz Chronological Classics packaging was always minimalist. Early jazz is not always cost effective on e-music. Because they charge per track and early jazz tracks are short you eat up a lot of credits that way. I have an extravagant £40 200 credit monthly package - that would get me 8 of these discs (whereas I think at my last refresh I ended up with about 20!). About £5 each. Obviously with the lower packages the prices rise so you'd end up paying around £7-8. If it's the only legal way to get the music then it doesn't break the bank. I know I used up 100 credits last year to get the JSP Eddie Condon set which had disappeared as a CD box. It would have been cheaper to buy as a CD set had it existed. I tend to check places like iTunes for discs with over 20 tracks - they can often be cheaper. Hm, yes. I thought they charged per album, as well. Thanks Bev. MG
  16. Db doesn't offer prestige (or even trusound) any more. So the crucial question is - what difference does it make to your sales? MG

  18. I haven't heard that. I saw him in St Louis, Senegal in '97 and he was TOTAL DYNAMITE, singing very much more in the style of his first two albums, "Doxandeme" and "Dieufdieull" than in the style of his more recent material for Jololi, which has been issued on CD by World Circuit. A year or so later, I saw him in London, at The Barbican, and it was all like his recent material; very low key stuff. The contrast was so great that I haven't bought any of his albums since then. If you see the CD "Inedits", this contains his first two K7s from the Audio Video label and is a great coupling. MG
  19. One of the things Sonny said, that's stuck in my head forever, was, "this shit ain't easy, baby!" MG
