  1. Super Disc (early name, Super Discs, when in New York) opened for business in 1945 and was owned by Irving Feld and Viola Marsham. Changed name when the firm moved to Washington DC in 1946. The firm made R&B, Jazz, Gospel and C&W records. Most successful Super Disc recording I know of (there may have been a popular country act, though) is "Little boy" by Rev Kelsey (an important preasher in DC), which got to 13 on the R&B chart in 1948 (for one week only, folks). Elder Lightfoot Solomon Michaux also recorded for the label. MGM acquired the catalogue in 1948. Feld and Marsham don't appear to have been associated with any other record companies. American Don't know much about this company. It was based in Woodside, Long Island, NY. It made pop and Jazz records. First issue was in December 1945; last in November 1952. Arista Another one I don't know much about. It was based in Baltimore. Made Gospel and Jazz records. Apparently closed in 1947. MG
  2. Just read this thread about Herbie Hancock ignoring the words. http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php...c=38034&hl= Come on, folks, spill it! What's wrong with songs, singers and the words (in general, I mean, not any specific song like "How much is that doggie in the window?"). MG
  3. Hey look, that geezer had Dex on his first LP. Didn't he learn from Dex that the words are important? MG
  4. Sorry dude, didn't mean to cause undue consternation. *I* am still trying to recover from the fact that he's 67. I guess I should really try and figure out who that old guy is who stares at me in the mirror each morning! Batman? Wish I had a batman - then I wouldn't have to look at myself when I'm shaving. MG
  5. Hugh Grant Grant Green Giuseppi Verdi
  6. Ah yes - I'll make a note of that. I have "Birds of a feather" by her and Ben Webster plays some breathtaking stuff behind her on that. Thanks Shawn. MG
  7. And his playing behind vocalists was sensational; I think he was one of the greats at that. His fills and obligatos behind Arthur Prysock on the Prysock/Basie album are all gems. And his work behind Mildred Anderson on "Person to person" is every bit as wonderful. (He also played behind Al Smith on Bluesville and, though one can't complain about Jaws, Smith ain't really up to much in my view. How hard is it to play something unique and personal behind a singer and at the same time not detract from what the singer's doing? A different kind of thing from making your solo, but valuable. I'd like to get some more stuff of Jaws playing behind vocalists - anyone got some recommendations? MG
  8. I only got "Afro-Jaws" myself about a week ago and have only listened to it once, so far. But it immediately struck me as an amazing album I wish I'd been listening to for forty years! MG
  9. Surprisingly little mention of the Reuben Wilson, Grant Green Jr, Bernard Purdie "Godfathers of groove" Or, for that matter, among previously unissued matter retrieved from vaults, The Harlem Arts Ensemble, "Live in New York" and Etta Jones/Houston Person's "Don't misunderstand". MG
  10. I have some K7s (probably pirates) by Ami Koita and some by Mahawa Kouyate & Soundioulou Cissokho which I've been told were originally issued on Ocora. But I've never been able to find out what they really were. Do you have any LPs by these artists on Ocora? Yes - I was thinking of Buur. MG
  11. I'm really worried about you Americans, you know... MG
  12. Evidence is mounting up. With a haircut and a suit, who knows where they could get in? Thomas Love Peacock was right! In "Melincourt" (1817) he had an orangutan become a Member of Parliament. And now look! MG
  13. Hi Moonshine! Whatcha got on Ocora? Is BAM the Senegalese label? If so, whatcha got on that? MG
  14. Is it me or does it feel bl**dy freezing? It IS freezing. Not as bad here as in Scotland, I saw on TV this morning when I took a coffee in to my missus - -10C there. It's the price of oil. Those Russians have turned off their central heating so there's nothing to warm up the wind as it whips across Central Europe. MG
  15. Finished this last night. Slow going, but very good description of almost total disaster, with almost no signs of hope at the end. MG
  16. What - all those gut-rending Clifford Scott solos not sending you? Buy a Big Jay McNeely album MG
  17. Still dry and still with a vicious wind - now from the east - and there's not a lot of high ground between here and the Urals. MG
  18. Groove Holmes - Broadway - Muse orig Nowt wrong with this one! MG
  19. Onzy Matthews select. An evening listen on the medium fi, rather than down in the dining room over breakfast. Wow! I keep thinking I recognise "Joe and I" by unknown. But I can't place it. Does anyone else get this feeling? MG
  20. I fear Jazzbo's correct - there have been no reissues since February this year - and only one Jimmy Scott, then. The last batch of reissued was August 2006. Current issues from Warner Jazz mostly appear to be Latin. The link in Caetano's post #51 still works and tells you what's available. Glad this was upped - there are a couple here I'd forgotten about - particularly Duke Ellington's "New Orleans suite". MG
  21. The Count of Monte Christo Porthos D'Artagnan
  22. Creedence Clearwater Revival will never be the same. MG
  23. Harold Vick - After the dance - Wolf orig Roberta Flack - First take - Atlantic UK RIP The Masked Announcer MG
