  1. I recall in Hoagy's autobio, "Sometimes I wonder" he said that his college friend, Stuart Gorrell came to him once and said, "you've got to write a song that starts 'Georgia, Georgia'", so Stuart got a half credit. MG
  2. Thanks folks! I didn't realise there were really two songs. MG
  3. Jimmy Ponder day continues on elpee While my guitar gently weeps - Cadet promo Jimmy Ponder - America All things beautiful - LRC orig MG
  4. A WONDERFUL STORY!!!!!! Thanks so much for sharing that! MG
  5. I have versions of this song crediting Weill/Anderson and Ramirez/Davis/Sherman. Does anyone know which is correct? And possibly even more amusingly, does anyone know how the error occurred? MG
  6. Got to say, those truffles (or that truffle) look like the kind of pile of shit that a modern artist WOULD produce - AND get into the Tate. MG
  7. Nigel Planer Charles Lindbergh (who flew the Atlantic to visit his aunt in Radyr) Roald Dahl (who lived in Radyr)
  8. It's wrong here, but that happened when we moved on to GMT as usual. Do your times change every October and March in America? MG
  9. Another good 'un goes. RIP Carlos. MG
  10. This strikes me as an extraordinarily good idea. Just come on this morning to see how much cash had come in to Jim's Paypal account and it's clear that the occasional bash at the money looks like the way to go. So I've now voted. MG
  11. Freddie Hubbard - Life flight - BN orig - with Stan Turrentine & George Benson, this is Blue Note's version of CTI Jimmy McGriff - Outside looking in - LRC orig MG
  12. Marcus - thanks for letting us know. I hope the therapy did some good. MG
  13. I haven't voted - yet. One of the things we don't know about is how many of us are actually going to shell out, since it's voluntary. The number affects the choices for method. If there are a hundred, the amount would be small, and it's probably not worth anything other than an annual drive. Fewer people, more money each has to contribute, and the more frequent options look more attractive. I think we need a feel - or Jim needs a feel - for what numbers are realistically up for contributions. MG
  14. Just joining in. Thanks for starting this Erik. MG
  15. Dja mean ya just fuckin' INVENT a coupon code!!!!!! MG No. I got 2 of them from Concord catalogs, one from a Concord email and one of them in a thread here. Used one for $13.98 items, one for $10.98 items, etc. Thanks Chuck - found it now. MG
  16. Dja mean ya just fuckin' INVENT a coupon code!!!!!! MG
  17. I volunteered earlier for that Jim. I'm still volunteering, as I have time. What about other stuff like backups and so on? MG PS - you may need someone in America, too, to cover that part of the day.
  18. There are times - when one's out shopping and there's a guy on the street flogging hot dogs - that the smell just GETS you (well, me) and you've GOT to have a hot dog (even if I've just eaten). When that happens, I really don't want ANYTHING except bread, sausage and fried onions, because that is THE ESSENCE of what I've been smelling. MG
  19. I didn't realise that we Yurpeans can join in this Concord sale; we were excluded from the last one, so I didn't bother to check. You might like to try Tiny Grimes' "Tiny in Swingville" - Jerome has some great solos in that one! Though I must say I prefer his sax work to flute. I might go for "Roamin' with" myself. But "horrendous Fedex rates abroad" gives me pause - what sort of money are you talking about Ubu? MG
  20. I had a couple of Torme LPs in the early sixties, which went when I needed money. But both were OK. One was "Songs for any taste", a live one on Bethlehem. Some of the tracks I still remember as killers - "I wish I were in love again" for instance - one NEVER hears anyone doing that song, which has some of the wittiest words in the GAS. But other tracks - "Autumn leaves" for example, in which he sings deliberately out of tune and in French with snide remarks is clearly one of the self-consciously hip efforts people rightly decry. The other one I had was "Sunday in New York" on Atlantic, which was a very pleasant, very professional, set of songs about NY. No high moments like the Bethlehem, but again some good songs you don't often hear sung. I do think that singers who can pick good, rarely heard, songs are valuable for that, irrespective of any other of their qualities, or lack thereof. MG
  21. Phew, shit! Dells' voices up to par, Jim? MG
  22. To all who celebrate it, Happy Hanukkah! And to all who don't Happy Hanukkah too! MG
  23. I've got to say that I don't think this idea of doing something special for subscribers is really what I want to see. There are a significant number of us who are regular users - either posting a lot or doing heavy lurking. We are getting big benefits already, or we wouldn't be doing it. I don't care if there are people who don't use the board much who don't pay, or even regular users who can't pay because, at present, they're in difficulties. This isn't about equity - at least not among us users, though it is as far as Jim's needs are concerned because he's been putting this stuff together at huge and unsustainable cost to himself and his family. And equally, it shouldn't be about giving the regulars some kind of extra status. Because status is earned by people like Chuck, Larry, JimS, Chris & Clem (and many others)whose contributions open things up for us. So let's us lot who've identified themselves, cough and leave others, who may be new or occasional users or may come along in the future, to decide what to do - once they get into it, they'll surely get clued in about the need to support the board. Allen's collecting pledges from us (see above somewhere). That seems a good way to get going on the money side. Do we need another thread to solicit volunteers to do other jobs? MG
