  1. There's nowt so queer as folk. To an outsider, this has been a most interesting and revealing thread. MG
  2. I think a personal "Canteloupe woman" might be something to write home about. Or perhaps not... MG
  3. I picked up on that one, too. But it's hellish expensive from Amazon.uk - even from the sellers. So I thought I'd get the library to get one. But I think I really want one of my own. Where did you get yours NS? MG
  4. Hope you enjoyed the photos inside the booklet. They're from a series I took during the recording session -_- Sorry to report there are no photos in the inside booklet of this new ESP-DISK cd. Just text. The official ESP reissue of the session is the one with this cover The liner notes include the photos! You're right. I ordered the orignal from cduniverse I thought. . . got the Abraxas. Just fixed that via an order from ESP-DISK itself. . That's terrible! Is CD Universe going to refund your money? MG
  5. Billy Cotton Sonny Stitt Bootsy Collins
  6. Indeed. I wonder if O'Donaghue was from around these parts. MG
  7. I'm surprised someone like Bob Shad could keep up those old school practices from the forties right through to the seventies. I'd have thought musicians would have got wise by then... MG
  8. Ken Livingstone (4eva) David Livingstone Henry Stanley
  9. Bela Fleck Bela Bartok Bela Lugosi

  13. You'll like that - after so much searching. MG
  14. Offhand, I think the only GM that had liner notes was Jimmy McGriff's "Let's stay together" - not that they were up to much anyway. MG
  15. How exactly does one expunge Butt Rag? Clicky For that expert summation, Dan, we thank you from the bottom... MG
  16. McCoy Mrubata Cyril Ngcukana Ezra Ngcukana
  17. I think it is available as part of A History of the English-Speaking Peoples. I don't know whether the Civil War history is creditable, but wikipedia says the following about his work as a historian: My mother had "History of the English speaking peoples" - I tried to read it when I was about 13. Gave up. Never regretted it. Much preferred the left wing of her library. MG PS thinking about Churchill as a writer while I was having a cough and drag in the garden (it's stopped raining for a few minutes), it occurred to me that Churchill wasn't really all that good, either as writer or as orator. But he was probably the first great master of sound bites. MG
  18. I've never been to a classical music concert where there's been an encore, either. I mean, if the programme is a Beethoven quartet, a Shostokovich nonet and a Debusy piece, all performed by different people, what's the point? Ditto for a Poulenc gig I went to; if you go along to hear a bit of Poulenc, WTF do you want for an encore? All the concerts I've been to are like that; a pre-announced bunch of pieces, or one piece. I guess it's different if you go to see a recital by a pop group like the three tenors, but I've never gone in for anything of that nature in classical music terms.
  19. i like that freddie mccoy album - nice jazz groove Freddie was a greatly under-rated innovator. MG
  20. Jack McDuff - The concert McDuff - Prestige (Fantasy) Freddie McCoy - Lonely Avenue - Prestige orig James Brown - Sho is funky down here - King (polydor reissue) MG
  21. A good batch! I reckon the Anna King is the greatest Soul album ever made. Where did you get the Larkin? I've been looking for a long time (in my usual desultory manner). MG I got the Larkin used off dustygroove for 4.99 ! Oh well - I've got 2 Larkins from them recently. I'd better keep on the lookout. MG
  22. A good batch! I reckon the Anna King is the greatest Soul album ever made. Where did you get the Larkin? I've been looking for a long time (in my usual desultory manner). MG
  23. "Afrodesia" is half good - actually half brilliant. But the other half stinks. MG
  24. If it's "Keep on loving" you're talking about, it's one for completists. It's very much like "Red beans" & co - perhaps not quite as stiff as that, but there's LOTS better GMs - and lots better Dr Smiffs. MG
  25. Grover Washington Jr - Winelight - Elektra UK Jack McDuff - Live at the Jazz Workshop - Stateside mono MG
