  1. Ah, well someone else needs to answer this. Sounds like they play the tune to me, but what do I know about form? MG
  2. Auntie Gloria George Coleman Ornette Coleman
  3. Argentinian Shiraz with lunch; now Clipper organic tea with Belgian cooking chocolate - yum! I suspect the Clipper organic tea has some Ceylon in it; which is great for me, but my ife has decided she doesn't like it because it's too strong. MG
  4. I've got "Contrasts" on LP. Used to have "Heaven on earth". Althea Young's singing is perhaps the most awful I've ever heard. She sings on both, but I couldn't ever get rid of "Contrasts" because "Majestic soul" is just totally incredible. MG
  5. Edwin Hubble (of telescope fame) Derek Humble Freddie Hubbard
  6. "Latin soul", which originally issued on New Jazz 8321, has been available in the USA since 1993 on this twofer PRCD 24128. It's coupled with "Hot sauce", which originaly issued on TruSound 15003. It's still available. Remastered by Kirk Felton in 1993. MG
  7. I wonder. I'd have thought you could just have listened to it and known straight off. Do you have that album? MG
  8. And that, dear friends, is something that is so obvious, yet so overlooked by so many when it comes to "other musics" & "comparing" them. I'm not a big Norah Jones fan, but I got the fullest respect for that comment. Yes. And it's back to what Braxton was saying. MG
  9. Some Gospel stuff Rev Isaac Douglas & the Charles Fold Singers - Live in concert - AVI reissue Rev W Leo Daniels - Looking for a bargain (sermon) - Peacock ABC issue orig Willie Banks & the Messengers - Heaven must be a beautiful place - Peacock ABC issue orig (this has a Songbird master number scratched out and the correct Peacock number written in ) MG
  10. Jim, you bugger, you nearly choked me, as I was swallowing hot choc and reading that! MG
  11. Yes, that's the part. It really has to be done low key for that not to be awful. Imagine Gator Tail or even Jug doing that and it would be disgusting! Green & Young do it just right, I think. You're forgiven MG
  12. Don't ask me, mate; none of my business. SoulStream will know. MG
  13. We've just opened a packet of Clipper Organic tea. It's blended from a number of soures, so I'm not clear how they can really know it's all organic. Anyway, it's fairly strong, but not filthy. Not bad, in fact. My missus has yet to pronounce on it, so I don't know whether we'll be getting it again, (though she does drink that brand of Rhooibos tea). MG
  14. "Sound your eyes can follow" - I love that playing David Newman - Front money - WB orig MG
  15. That's the man! Always! MG
  16. And more Eddie Chamblee, for HIS birthday The rockin' and walkin' rhythm of Eddie Chamblee - Official MG
  17. Thank you Durium, for the introduction to Oscar Aleman. I'll be having a look at your work on him and probably buying some in due course. What a charming musician! And also for the reminders of Svend Assmussen. I remember his many appearances on British TV in the sixties and seventies. Not only a good musician but a very funny man, with a deadpan sense of humour. I didn't realise he was still around! Wonderful! MG
  18. Continuing the Fathead birthday celebrations by playing an LP back at home (so hard to do when you're out shopping) David Newman - Scratch my back - Prestige orig -GREATEST EVER DISCO ALBUM!!!!! MG
  19. Well, that sez it all, dunnit? MG
  20. It's Freddy Robinson's birthday today so, as a special treat for me, I'm playing Off the cuff - Enterprise (orig) Very laid back Blues/R&B album which I don't play enough. Think I'll get this out a bit more often. (David Newman's and Eddie Chamblee's birthdays to be celebrated on vinyl later - sure is a good day for birthdays!) MG
  21. Absolutely. Grant Green usually included at least one recent pop hit in his albums (from "Carrying on" onwards, several). This is one of the things I really like about him - like me, he thought that jazz should be popular. Michael Cuscuna, in the sleeve notes to "Gooden's corner" described GG as a great populariser. So what's a populariser supposed to do if not cover popular tunes? First session – none Grant’s first stand – Lullaby of the leaves (The Ventures) Green Street – none Sunday morning – Exodus (Ferrante & Teicher) Grantstand - none Remembering – I remember you (Frank Ifield) Gooden’s corner – Moon river (Jerry Butler) Nigeria – The things we did last summer (Shelley Fabares) Oleo – none Born to be blue – none The Latin bit – Besame mucho (The Coasters) Goin’ west – I can’t stop loving you (Ray Charles) & Red River Valley (Johnny & The Hurricanes (as "Red River rock")) Feeling the spirit – none Blues for Lou – Personality & Have you ever had the blues (Lloyd Price) Am I blue – Take these chains from my heart (Ray Charles) Idle moments – none Matador – none Solid – Wives & Lovers (Jack Jones) Talkin’ about – People (Barbra Streisand) Street of dreams – I wish you love (Gloria Lynne) & Naked City theme I want to hold your hand - I want to hold your hand (The Beatles) His Majesty, King Funk – That lucky old sun (Ray Charles) Iron City – Samba d’orfeu (Vince Guaraldi (B side of “Cast your fate to the wind") Carryin’ on – 3 hits Green is beautiful – 3 hits Alive – 5 hits Visions – 6 hits Shades of Green – 8 hits Club Mozambique – 6 hits The final comedown – none Live at the Lighthouse – 3 hits The main attraction – none Easy – 3 (or 4) hits Complaining about GG playing commercial stuff seems very odd to me. That's what he DID. MG
  22. Hah. Wait until he finds out they don't allow ANY politics over there! what else does he talk about? Too "smart ass" times 2 Greg. Chris is an important person in jazz history. Leave "politics" for a minute and give him credit for his musical works. Music is the reason for this forum. Too true - I wish he were back here for what he can contribute on that score (not that I don't like his politics, y'know). MG
  23. Ah - I've been buying real cheapo stuff from UK. The expensive stuff is coming from Sterns - the bastards. MG
  24. this I do not understand as I've made plenty of amazon.uk purchases through the search here over the past 6 months.Perhaps it's not working correctly or do the payments appear to come from amazon.com. Either way this really surprises mes Me too - and Amazon .fr Queer... MG
