I'm from Detroit, living in L.A. It's no mystery why Detroit folks relocate here. Glad to hear Moore appears to be doing well. His playing was special. I wish he was still playing so that I could hear him in L.A. THANKS.

JamesJazz, seeing that you had/have a relationship with Kenny Cox, do you know what became of trumpeter, Charles Moore. I admire his work on INTRODUCING and I expected to hear more from him.

All I know is the album INTRODUCING KENNY COX AND THE CONTEMPORARY JAZZ QUINTET, recorded in 1968 and '69, includes the Cox composition TRANCE DANCE, and it sounds better than the Crusaders version. This Kenny Cox group seems to be reaching for a sound similar to the "second great" Miles Davis Quintet and features Joe Henderson's brother, Leon, on tenor. I like the album a lot and the tune SOJOURN is one of my all-time favorites.
  4. I have a 2004 release of Duke Pearson's THE PHANTOM.
  5. What I remember about the film is I liked it, a lot. I liked it because it showed Jack Johnson as more than a one-dimensional caricature. I liked finding out about Johnson's Russia experience, his living in Paris, his musicianship (yes, he was a musician, too), his beloved image outside of the U.S. And I liked the way the soundtrack meshed with the images.
  6. R.I.P. Smokin' Joe, Philadelphia's real "Rocky".
  7. It's hard to get good Quad now-a-days.....
  8. That was the CD version. I was talking about the 2 LP version that was issued sometime in the 70's - can't remember the year. I have the 2 LP version released in 1973 by "ABC Records, Inc.", IMPULSE RECORDS. The liner notes say, "Transfer engineering by Ed Michel, with Rick Heenan, Bob Brown, and Kathryn King, at The Village Recorder, Los Angeles. This concert was originally recorded monaurally for radio broadcast. The master heard here can be especially interesting when heard through matrix quadraphonic / stereo playback equipment."
  9. Thanks, that's good to know. Amazon.com should correct their sound clip for this cd because track 2 of disc 1 is identified as "Dear Lord/Transition" but the sound clip is "Welcome".
  10. Slash.
  11. If you were Black you would know the expression is, "The darker/blacker the berry, the sweeter the juice".
  12. My original LP of Transition does have "Dear Lord". I have "Welcome" on Kulu Se Mama. Weird....
  13. My original LP copy and my CD of TRANSITION does not contain DEAR LORD. Instead the song is WELCOME. I listened to a sound clip of this new release on Amazon.com and indeed, it was WELCOME. Please let us know after you receive your copy what the actual tune is. I love WELCOME but DEAR LORD is my ultimate Coltrane ballad. Thanks.
  14. One of the video clips here introduces all of the artists. Jymie Merritt is introduced as well as Billy Harper, Cecil Bridgewater, Harold Vick and others.
  15. Also like his vocals and composing on the Bobby Hutcherson album NOW!
  16. email address change

  17. I just read your post on thedwork's topic about gay marriage. Your comment about improving the readability of his text reminded me of the problem I have reading the black on brown text on your blog.

I'm a designer and I would recommend that you use white type on that brown background or perhaps a white drop shadow on the black text.

I hope you accept this as a friendly recomme...

  18. Caught Carlos Garnet with Phil Ranelin's group yesterday at The Barbara Morrison's Center for Performing Arts. Smokin'!
  19. I ordered them from Amazon.com. I already have THE PHANTOM, THE RIGHT TOUCH, PRAIRIE DOG, HONEY BUNS, SWEET HONEY BEE and WAHOO, as well as several sideman and producer dates.

  20. Thanks, Gerald. I just ordered more of your uncle's recordings, Profile, Tender Feelin's and Introducing/Big Band. BTW is Jeannine your sister? Cali (aka Chuck)

  21. Ready Rudy, I'd like to echo some of the above greetings. I've always loved Mr. Pearson's compositions, arrangements and playing. Here's hoping you share more information about him and his associations. Thank you for what you've already shared.
  22. A little background as to how this may have come about. I went to Dorsey High School in Los Angeles as did Mike Love. Charles Lloyd was a student-teacher (that's what they called it at the time) in the music department at the time while he was studying at USC. I'm sure that's when he met Love. At the same time Forest Hamilton, Chico's son, was also attending Dorsey. The song Forest Flower by Lloyd was said to have been written for Chico's son while Lloyd was in Chico's band. At any rate, that video clip is some funny sh!t !
  23. I like the cover art of all three, especially the Grant Greens.
