Anyone heard from Wesbed lately?

Who the fuck ya talkin' about? -
I resolve to purchase more jazz CDs in 2005 than I did in 2004. Which, by the way, will be difficult to accomplish.

The DHL van delivered my Parlan today. Tasty. I received set number 2348 of 5000. So, not half sold yet.

I saw Sideways and enjoyed it immensely. I thought it was well-acted, well-written, fun and interesting. All the things a good movie should be. I laughed at the scene, although subtle and short, where the main character, a wine connoisseur, goes apeshit when he believes he might have to drink some merlot. A very enjoyable two hours spent at the movie theater. Sideways is on my list of top two or three movies of the year 2004.

Not sure I understand - if they're online, haven't they been scanned (i.e., digitized) already? I was thinking the exact same thing. If they're online, they've aleady been scanned. If they haven't been scanned (or something of the sort)... I'm thinking they're probably not online

It appears that Blockbuster has just dropped it's monthly rental fee to $14.99.

Dexter Gordon's version of Have Yourself A Merry Little Chrismas is due a thumbs up.

The weather is tough in Tucson too. I was out on my back porch using my wireless this evening. I had to switch from a short-sleeved shirt to a long-sleeved shirt. It was ridiculous.

THE 27TH MAN is not great, but not bad either. I've listened to it and enjoyed it. If I didn't already have a copy, I'd buy it. I have the RVG of THE PRISONER but haven't listened to it recently. I can't remember what the music of THE PRISONER sounds like. I do remember something in the liner notes where Herbie, if I remember correctly, spoke of being a prisoner of music or expectations or something of the like. I need to listen to THE PRISONER again.

I watched the first two episodes last night (my Sunday night's entertainment). The first two episodes focus on New Orleans jazz and the effect, in Chicago and New York, of Armstrong and Ellington. Keeping in mind that the JAZZ series is meant for the general public, I though the first two installments were quite good. I thought Wynton spoke intelligently, with passion, and offered some good insights into the music and the culture of jazz.

This is an interesting discussion. As much as I enjoy Morgan and Hubbard... I can't say which is 'better.' Both are very good at playing their own style. I do believe Hubbard is more 'precise' where Morgan is more 'soulful.' I'm glad to see somebody sticking up for Hubbard. While I can't knock Morgan, I've never considered Hubbard a less than excellent player.

I've never seen a second of the Ken Burns JAZZ series. I was considering renting the first two disks from my local Blockbuster store. Is it just my computer or does this thread seem broken and oddly formatted (especially on the first page)?

I watched Clint Eastwood's 'Bird' a couple of weeks ago. If I remember correctly, and I might no be doing so, Pee Wee (an actor portraying Pee Wee) makes an appearance when Charlie Parker plays at Birdland. Again, maybe I'm thinking of a different movie, I can't remember. Anyhow, when I saw Pee Wee, wherever it was that I saw Pee Wee, I was reminded of this thread and Christiern's words of Pee Wee possibly being a 'she.'

It appears, since I initially posted in this thread, that Netflix and Blockbuster have lowered their prices. Netflix has dropped its price to $17.99 per month. Blockbuster has dropped its price to $17.49 per month. Ahhh, the merits of competition.

I remember, when I first purchased HUB CAP, it seems like it was January of 2003. I had to make the drive all the way across Tucson, from the Border's store and back to my home. For the forty minute drive I purchased some Starbuck's coffee and opened my new copy of HUB CAP. During the drive I believed HUB CAP was good but not great. I just recently listened to HUB CAP to hear more of Jimmy Heath. I was listening to the HUB CAP tunes, mostly for Jimmy Heath, and enjoying Heath's playing. What caught me by surprise, however, I was enjoying the playing of all others involved as well. At the end of HUB CAP I had the thought, "Damn. That was really good."

The problem I have with jazz, in trying to limit my buying, goes like this -- I was reading the Gil Coggins thread elsewhere on this board. As a result, I listened to the Miles Davis Blue Notes VOLUME 1 and VOLUME 2 (to hear Gil Coggins). Upon listening the Miles VOLLUME 2, I heard what I thought was Charlie Parker. I didn't remember Charlie Parker playing on the session. I read the notes and discovered the saxophone player was Jimmy Heath (on the tenor). I know who Jimmy Heath is, however, I'm not familiar with the man's sound. I went to the AMG site and read that Jimmy Heath is, in fact, recognized as sounding very much like Charlie Parker. I'm listening to my copy of Freddie Hubbard's HUB CAP (which includes Jimmy Heath) as I type these words. Now, as a result of how the art of jazz works, I'm interested in obtaining more sessions that include Jimmy Heath. See? There is no end to the jazz learning, appreciating and buying.

I recognized Gil Coggins name as being the Gil Coggins who played on the Miles Davis VOLUME 1 Blue Note. I remember, when I first purchased the Davis RVG, reading the notes and wondering who Gil Coggins was. I'm listening, as I type these words, to the VOLUME 1 tracks Coggins is present on.

Methinks I don't need to discover a new interest in classical music.

It's fun to be inspired to listen to an album you haven't heard in years. For some unknown reason you pick up something you've had for a long time but haven't heard for an equally long time. You listen to it and enjoy just as much as you used to. The music seems like an old, comfortable, friend you haven't seen for several years. When this happens it causes me to remember all the music I currently own. I wonder why I feel a need to have so much new music when I have so much good material already in my possession?

I'm in for March 6th.

I've placed one order per week, for the last month, for 7 and 8 CDs at a time from CD Universe. I'm catching up on all the K2s I've missed. I have CDs, stand-alone CDs, and Mosaic box CDs that still have the shrink wrap on them. Yet I still desire MORE jazz CDs. The more I have, the better I feel.

Your 5 favorite JAZZ purchaces on CD in 2004.
wesbed replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Miscellaneous Music
One of my Top Five purchases of 2004 is The Wes Montgomery Trio. I purchased this item assuming it wouldn't be much but thinking it would be something good to have to follow the career of Mr. Montgomery. To my surprise, this, to my ears, is Wes at his best. Sort of raw, sort of bare bones, deceptively simple sounding music. At the same time, played with much complexity, style and swing. Some of the tunes put me in a trance-like state. The is my favorite Wes Montgomery title so far. He played well in a trio format of guitar, organ, and drums. -
I enjoy MERRY OLE SOUL which is available in the Duke Pearson Select.
-
My favorite Christmas recording is Jingle Bell Jazz.

The Art Pepper will be my first pre-order from Mosaic. I mean, Art Pepper, Malcolm Addey and Mosaic? It's a done deal.
