  1. Yeah, that darned $8.99 - $11.99 per disk is breaking me, financially. The costs of the remastering, repackaging, distributing, retailing, and some profit must be paid by some means. If Blue Note can keep the price of RVGs where it is, I'll continue buying the RVG releases. What I don't understand about RVG pricing is why a two-disk RVG costs more than two one-disk RVGs. What gives?
  2. Jolly on Smack Up.
  3. I listened to this on my way to work this morning.
  4. Whatever 'they' figure out to block the copying of CDs... 'we,' the computer users of the world, will find a way around it. More power to 'them.' More wasted effort and money on 'their' part. There will be a piece of software that will be able to break the copy protection code, whatever it might be. I like it when the average person has the same technology as the big corporations.
  5. No pun intended?

    It's Tuesday!

I went to Border's yesterday (6/16/04), checking the shelves to see what new releases I might find. I found nothing new. I checked JazzMaTazz today and discovered that there was really nothing released yesterday. It looks like the next significant release date will be on 6/29/04.
  8. Yes, but there is really nothing to clear up. I just didn't want you to think I was 'taking aim' at you because I quoted your text in my post about your comment concerning Mike Ricci. I wanted to state, at the begining of my post, that my words were not meant as anything negative toward you. Some people can get really defensive (and really quickly!). You had nothing to defend yourself from and I wanted you to now that up front. In addition to JSngry's post, I felt it necessary to make certain that nobody from the Organissimo board had the belief that Mike Ricci had said something in bad taste about b3-er or the Organissimo board. I didn't want my words about Mike Ricci to be taken out of context. I've learned how fast out-of-context words can spread between the two jazz boards. I didn't want to be the source of incorrect rumors. I've seen too many things spread between the two boards, creating badwill when no badwill was intended.
  9. Any donation would be completely voluntary. If person, voluntarily, makes a donation then, voluntarily, acts like an asshole, the board administrator would have the same ability, as now, to ban regardless of the voluntary donation of the given user. It could be argued that, in an extreme case, a given user could be donating enough money to the board so as to influence the board administrator's decision to ban. If this happened, it would still be at the complete discretion of the board administrator to ban the given user. Is that user's monetary contribution a fair trade for the user's actions that could, potentially, wreck the board? On the other hand and more realistically, in my opinion, any member who has voluntarily donated funds, whether said funds be large or small, is donating the funds in trade for a service. It makes no sense that a donor would choose to pay his money in hopes of learning that the service has become unavailable to him or that the service has become damaged as a result of his actions.
  10. Try listening to some popular FM radio music as you drive around in your car. It will bring, to you, a renewed appreciation of just how fantastic jazz is. I hit a dry spell last February. I felt comfort in knowing I wasn't spending as much money on jazz. On the other hand, I felt 'lost' in realizing that my enjoyment of jazz was on the low end of the jazz enjoyment scale. I decided to purchase a 'history of jazz' book. I was reading and thought, to myself, "hey, I didn't know this and didn't know that." I purchased a couple of the recordings listed in the book and gained a new appreciation for the likes of Louis Armstrong and Bix Beiderbecke. The next thing I knew I was purchasing the New Orleans Jazz Mosaic box, then the Vee Jay Mosaics, some RVGs I didn't have, and oh my, I'm spending all my money on jazz again. Recently, I purchased a new pair of headphones to be able to listen to jazz from a different perspective. I always listen to the music via loudspeakers, which is still my preferred way to listen. The headphones, however, can show detail, some good and some bad, that you simply can't hear through loudspeakers alone. My interest in jazz fluctuates between higher and lower levels but NEVER goes away. The music is always there when I need it. Always. An evening of good jazz, good booze (sometimes good coffee instead), good food, and the world seems a much more inhabitable place. B)
  11. chris olivarez, this post is meant as nothing negative toward you nor anything negative toward Mike Ricci. In defense of my post and my use of Mr. Ricci's name, however -- what Mr. Ricci wrote, in my opinion, was meant only as a positive toward b3-er and the Organissmo board. I used Mike Ricci's name solely because he runs his own site, has had his share of problems, and probably knows better than any of us, due to his experience, what technology is required to run an active website. Maybe Mike Ricci would be an infromative contact to advise as to what kind of technology is needed to make the Organissimo board more stable as it continues to be active and add members? I don't believe it's us against them. Rather, it's us against the world in our attempt to keep the enjoyment of jazz discussion and unrestricted discussion, in general, alive. I've spent many-an-evening browsing and posting at the Organissimo site. How many other 'good' jazz discussion boards are there? The answer: not many. I know, from viewing other internet bulletin boards, that sites such as Tech Support Guy and Free Republic are taking donations from members to invest back into the necessary technology. I missed the hell out of the Organissimo board while it was down. I don't know how the donation thing works but I'm willing to donate X amount of dollars, as my willingness permits, to keep Organissimo functioning efficiently. I don't know how it's done. If Mike Ricci says there is better technology available, then I believe him. I know his internet knowledge is greater than mine. I'm thinking that Mosaic Records might want to donate some funds to this board. The Organissimo board has sold enough of Mosaic's product. Mosaic could donate some funds and b3-er could add a Mosaic logo and link to his front page.
  12. In consideration of the recent couple of weekends with no Organissimo forum and a comment from Mike Ricci (at All About Jazz) saying that b3-er needs better technology to keep the Organissimo board afloat, I wonder what the 'better technology' would be? A faster server? A different host? How much money might it cost? If you look at this bulletin board, http://forums.techguy.org/index-.html, there is a Donate! link in the upper-right corner of the screen. I wonder what it does? I wonder how it works? I'd be willing to donate a few dollars, now and again, to the Organissimo board, if it would help with some 'new technology.' I mean, if I could just press a Donate! link, enter my credit card number, and donate $15 or $20, I would do it. Any ideas? Comments?
  13. Yes, I've heard plenty of 'bad' about it. But, it's almost time to make up my own mind about 'Night of the Cookers.' I enjoy a good jam and, from what I've read, this could be it. B)
  14. I received my Sony CD3000s about two weeks ago. I'm still breaking them in, according to opinions at Head-Fi. I found the 'phones at Etronics for $379. This beats Best Buy by about $100.
  15. My problem, recently, is that I'm liking ALL KINDS of jazz... from boogie woogie, to New Orleans, to pre-bop, bebop, bip bop, hardbop, post bop, avant garde, and early fusion... on rare occasions, even som hip hop. No one can save me know. Hey, just thinking of it, I need to buy some more Mosaics before I get behind.
  16. I purchased my copy today. Border's still had the single copy in stock. Yummy.
  17. Has anyone here heard this? >AMG Link< I was browsing through my local Border's, this afternoon, and found Kellaway's 'Cello Quartet.' I didn't know what it was nor had I ever heard of Roger Kellaway. I thought, what the freaking hell, it's a Verve, it's remastered, and it's only $9.99. How bad could it be? I popped the disk into my car's CD player on the way home. My first thought was that the music sounded more classical than jazz. I had thoughts of 'easy listening' and 'pre new age.' I said, to myself, "It's nice enough but a little too nice for me. How bad could be? Or, rather, how good could it be? Errr... not too good, really. But, for $9.99 it's a keeper." Upon repeated listening via my home stereo, I've fallen under the spell of the 'Cello Quartet.' My head is buried so deep in the sand of jazz that I don't listen to much else. The Kellaway title is my first non-jazz purchase in years (besides Steely Dan). However, I'm not sure the 'Cello Quartet' is truly non-jazz. It's kind of jazz and kind of not. It's classical but it's not. It's new age and easy-listening, yet, it's not. It's a very eclectic set of music. I can't explain it nor can I quit listening to it. I'm certain the 'Cello Quartet' is not as much of a surprising or odd release to others on this board as it has been to me. This is my first experience with Roger Kellaway and my first experience with classical jazz (or what ever it's called). This is no Hank Mobley, Lee Morgan, or Wes Montgomery... but Kellaway's music has been very satisfying to my ears this evening.
  18. I own the Hodges Mosaic and the JJ Johnson Mosaic. Both are very good sets. I recommend both. However, the JJ Johnson is the oldest limited-issue Mosaic CD set still available from Mosaic. I'd recommend the Johnson due to it's earlier release date. You can get the Hodges next month. On the other hand, I'd also consider purchasing the set you are currently most in the mood for. If I didn't already have it, I'd go with the JJ Johnson while it's still available.
  19. Guess what? The musicplasma site doesn't link Kenny G to Charllie Parker in any form. Kenny Gorelick just doesn't chirp & squeek as well as Bird.
  20. WTF? How many of these sets can be left? Somebody, quick, purchase these last couple of New Orleans Jazz sets. I'm thinking Mosaic might need the shelf space to store the Tal Farlow boxes.
  21. I would purchase the JJ Johnson box for two reasons: One, the music is very good. Two, the JJ box is the oldest on your list and may be the first to go OOP.
  22. This is an interesting music website. Enter the artist of choice and press 'search.' musicplasma The website is visually appealing. Although, I'm not certain the information is very useful.
  23. It's Friday again. There aren't enough Fridays in the week. I have Friday, today, off from work. I slept till 10:00AM, brewed some fresh coffee, and enjoyed a long shower. I'm going to my parent's house for a home-cooked brunch (yes, my Mom knows how to cook). I have no plans but a day like this is a good start to the weekend, whatever the weekend might bring.
  24. Here is another thead containing more opinions regarding the Carmell Jones Select. >other thread<
