  1. I wonder if I could get one in the shape of a trumpet or a saxophone? Or, maybe the letters RVG? I'd be so friggin' cool.
  2. Sometimes, when I try the higher-bit samples from the Mosaic page, nothing happens. Have you tried using the lower-bit samples? When I can't get the higher-bit samples to work I can, at times, get the the lower-bit samples to play. I don't believe it's my connection since I'm using a broadband connection to the internet.
  3. Note: inspired by the 'Finally hearing Sonny Clark' thread. It happens all the time. You hear a certain jazz artist or style of music, and it either hits you or doesn't. You can't do much to force the music to hit. It will hit you whenever it does. I started reading the History of Jazz book (by Gioia) a few days ago. I read of the influences on jazz of Louis Armstrong. I've been listening to jazz since the mid 1980s and never appreciated the influence of Armstrong. I listened to parts of the Armstrong Hot Five and Seven groups. The book dealt, next, with the subject of Bix Beiderbecke. The book discussed how Bix was interested in a nice, floating tone. Yet, at the same time, was a very sophisticated player like Armstrong. I listened to Bix on my way to work this morning (via the Bix/Tram Mosaic box). Yes, yes... a very nice tone from the cornet of Beiderbecke. The kind of sound you want to keep hearing for the duration. I never noticed this sublte softness till today. I wish there were more songs on the Bix/Tram Mosaic that place Bix out in front of the group. I don't believe the style of music, in the 1920s was nearly as focused on the soloist as the music of later years. The listener must listen closely to appreciate Bix's tone on the old recordings. I'm happy to be finally 'hearing' Beiderbecke.
  4. I blame Chuck Mangione and Spyro Gyra for making me listen to jazz. Chuck Mangione was, once upon a time, very much an important jazz figure to me.
  5. Feck. Mosaic's site is still down.
  6. I saw and listened to this Hubert Laws at Barnes & Noble. I thought it was cool while I listened in the store. But, it's really not the kind of music I'd play much (or, at all). So, I enjoyed my moment in the bookstore and passed on the purchase. I believe it was money well not-spent.
  7. I listened to the Preservation Hall disks at Barnes & Noble last week. I didn't listen to every song but, yes, this music does sound much like that of the New Orleans Jazz box. I can't say it's 100% because I've not yet heard all of the New Orleans box. I was wondering if the Preservation Hall issues have anything to do with the expiration of Mosaic's license of the New Orleans Jazz sessions? Maybe the two have nothing to do with each other? The New Orleans jazz sessions are on Atlantic. I don't know if Atlantic or the parent company have anything in common with the Preservation Hall titles.
  8. Ubu: You are somewhat safe regarding the Vee Jays while the Mosaic web site is down.
  9. I'm with John B on the New Orleans Jazz box. I'd never heard this style of music and it was quite a pleasant surprise for me. The playing is good and the quality of the sound exceptional.
  10. Blue Note Europe is still functioning per expectations.
  11. Mine just rings like a telephone. You know... ring, ring, and ring?
  12. I interpreted the meaning as being a great pop musician.
  13. Here's an English version, translated from French to English using Google. >translated article<
  14. I finally found the Duke Pearson RVG after driving to the Border's store on the other side of town and rummaging through the CD racks. The only remaing RVG, of the most recent group, that I've yet to purchase is the Donald Byrd. I couldn't bring myself to pay Border's price of $26.99. Why is a single RVG priced at $11.99 and a double RVG is priced at $26.99? $11.99 multiplied by two is $23.98.
  15. For me to debate with Chuck Nessa about what is or is not a jazz cornerstone would be quite a David & Goliath story. Me being David and he being Goliath. I'm not sure David would be the winner in this case. I do understand Chuck's point. That there are many memorable jazz recordings, but that not all are necessarily 'jazz cornerstones.' However, I don't know if I'd have had the opportunity to come to know any jazz cornerstones if I'd not been 'suckered in' by three important jazz recordings, cornerstones or not. Brubeck's Time Out. This is 'the one' that got me into the music. Before Brubeck, I was listening to Chuck Mangione and Spyro Gyra. Something about this recording captivated me to no end and made me dig deeper into jazz. Much deeper than I'd ever thought I'd go. I used to play this album during the summer months and it would remind me of Christmas. Miles' Kind of Blue The recording that made me sit back and think, "Yeah, yeah, this is what it's all about." The first time I heard Kind of Blue, the names Coltrane and Miles were new to me. I've spent many a blue night being captivated, enlightened, and spiritually fixed by this set of tunes. Finally, Mingus Ah Um Can't say why... I just always dug the hell of this one from Charles Mingus. It was the final of 'the big three' that pulled me down into the depths of jazz. I've had my jazz highs and lows but have never been able to get the music out of my system. Not that I mind. Sometimes it's good to be 'suckered in.' My intention, here, is most definitely not to use the words of Chuck Nessa against him. I want this to be clear. I just thought it was interesting to read Chuck's words of 'suckered in' and had that thought that I was thankful for being 'suckered.' I find it interesting to note that all three of my initial purchases into the world of jazz were on Columbia. Whereas, nowadays, I consider Blue Note to be my jazz label of choice. AfricaBrass writes that his third jazz purchase was the Mingus Ah Um title. It's interesting that my third purchase was the same title. I wonder what the first two jazz purchases made by AfricaBrass were?
  16. Now you can listen to 'Poor Eric.' One of the best tunes from the new RVGs, in my opinion.
  17. I haven't been watching the game. But, a friend just sent me a message saying Duke is Dead?
  18. It's interesting how art can be interpreted in different ways. I always thought the Hank Alien Insect photo was cool as hell. Kind of a glimpse of Hank in action. Right up close, front & center.
  19. Roll-eyes looks normal to me as well.
  20. I never had this before. So, picked up the K2 remaster today.
  21. Rooster: Before I say what I'm going to say... I realize that computer software/hardware is not free, and not always cheap. I'd rather be spendng my money on jazz rather than computer stuff. With that in mind, however, you'd be much better served to get off Windows ME and move up to a better version of Windows (such as Windows 2000 or Windows XP). Windows ME seemed to have so many built-in ways to blow itself up. You may have done nothing to cause Windows ME to blow its own brains. You know? Anyway, not to tell you how to spend your money. But, you'd be positively surprised at how stable the newer versions of Windows are. My copy of Windows XP has crashed, maybe twice, in the last year and a half.
  22. I don't recall the exact Display screens in WINme. If you follow the steps Claude listed, does the Display window show your correct monitor and video adapter names? The screen might/should list the brand/number of your monitor and/or video adapter. If you have the wrong name listed in Windows screen, you are probably not getting the full functionality out of your hardware. You could have the best video hardware known to man but be limited to only the very basics if you don't have the correct software/drivers installed. You may have to reinstall the proper monitor/video adapter drivers from either (1) the Windows program or (2) by downloading the correct drivers from a manufacuter's web site. If you have a name-brand computer, the drivers should be on the computer manufacturer's site. If you have a name-brand monitor, such as a Sony for example, you would find the driver at Sony's site.
  23. I'm just now getting back to listening to Mosaic items I purchased a year ago (such as the Grachan Moncur Select). Just a few more CDs and I'll by happy. Yeah, just a few more... The Mosaic site is functioning again. Now I can place my order for the Stanley T. Complete Mosaic.
  24. I'm self-managed with the Political Forum. I don't post much there but I want to be able to if I want to.
