  1. AAJ the website doesn't pay, though AAJNY the newspaper does. When everyone is only assigned to review artists and CDs they are already comfortable hearing, then you will rarely have negative reviews in a website or publication. I frequently pitch artists I haven't yet heard, sometimes, I'm surprised, sometimes I'm disappointed. One thing I learned: All Music Guide only licenses out good reviews. 1 1/2 star scathing reviews aren't shared with sites like Barnes & Noble, Swapacd, etc.
  2. A recent CD I reviewed on Gambit mentioned a November 1964 radio interview with Eric Dolphy. It must have been conducted by a seance.
  3. PM sent on: Marmarosa, Dodo Dodo's Bounce Fresh Sound 12
  4. The Byard Futura LP Parisian Solos was reissued a year or so ago, I think on Musica. Are these the tracks? A Tribute to Jimmy Slide Love Is Here to Stay Willow Weep for Me Bugle Call Rag When Lights Are Low Dedicated to Bob Vatel of Ten Gallons Isle to Isle Shiny Stockings Besame Mucho Going Home Blues I'll have to check when I get home.
  5. I've never understood people who try to sell everything at once, where they'll typically not get bids compared to breaking things up.
  6. PM sent on: Mulligan, Gerry Mainstream of Jazz Emarcy (Japan) 10 Paris Reunion Band French Cooking Gazell 7 Paris Reunion Band For Klook Gazell 8
  7. I've long owned the Affinity LP of this session, though it's not going anywhere. Good luck!
  8. Dolphy also appears on some tracks of John Lewis' Atlantic CD The Wonderful World of Jazz.
  9. I was unhappy when I discovered the use of real rust on the Verve Evans set. My father gave me a tip: clean it with Comet. That seems to have slowed the rust's progress considerably. I hope the bozo who conceived the package is out of the CD design business for good, along with the nut who designed the Charlie Christian long box.
  10. There are many obvious candidates, like: Bud Shank: A Spoonful of Jazz (music of the Lovin' Spoonful) Joe Pass: The Stones Jazz (Rolling Stones' songs, arranged by Bob Florence) I'm sure neither artist was interested in the material, just a paycheck during a very difficult period in their careers.
  11. She wasn't recorded nearly often enough. My condolences to her family.
  12. One FB poster believes the cause of death was a head-on car crash, though I haven't found anything on line.
  13. I just learned through Facebook that Stacy Rowles has passed away. I haven't learned any details.
  14. Michel Petrucciani, in my view, tending to be at his best in solo or trio settings. I don't care for the stuff where he added the lame Adam Holzman on synthesizer. Also worth getting is Michel's sideman appearance with Stephane Grappelli. Power of Three was also issued as a DVD.
  15. There are so many poor rock drummers it's too long a list to make. "Drum machines are the Cheez Whiz of musical instruments." Ken Dryden
  16. It lives up to expectations. The audio on the London session is a notch below the other dates, but that is due to the condition of the source material. Waller fans should snap up this excellent release!
  17. I reviewed that book for The Saturday Review — it was riddled with inexcusable factual mistakes, spelling mistakes, etc. 'Talking Jazz' and 'Black Talk' are two different books. Your review was of his thesis based piece - a very tuff read. The book 'TJ' was a compilation of interviews that have since appeared in full on NPR etc. errors about errors about error seems redundant. Ben has taught me lots as have you, tho. Actually, Talking Jazz was first an NPR radio series first, I think it was called Sidran on Record, though I believe the reviews were edited somewhat to allow for music excerpts and to fit the 59 minute time frame. Since the book has been issued, I believe there is a CD boxed set of the unedited interviews for sale at a hefty price.
  18. I reviewed an Orrin Keepnews book back when I first started writing for the newspaper here and careless editing by the book editor left a review that made no sense. Other howlers: the misidentification of Denny Zeitlin as Lew Tabackin, plus Jaco Pastorius and Tabackin being listed as unknown in the photo published in the Wayne Shorter bio a few years ago. If the author had bothered to check with real jazz journalists, they would have had no problem identifying them, as many of them likely owned a copy of the 2 LP set Jazz at the Opera House, which featured the very same backstage photo she used. The bio of Grant Green that appeared around 2000 was dreadful: full of mistakes, incorrect dates, with an obvious lack of jazz knowledge on the part of the author and an amateurish, fawning discography/critique by a young fan.
  19. I reviewed that book for The Saturday Review — it was riddled with inexcusable factual mistakes, spelling mistakes, etc. I've never read either edition all the way through, though I have copies of both. I'm not surprised.
  20. The hardback edition of Ben Sidran's Talking Jazz consistently refers to pianist "Denny Zeitland" thoughout his feature. I presume someone else transcribed this interview and Sidran never reviewed it, or else some bozo changed it after he had. Note: This error was fixed for the paperback edition.
  21. I purchased the Nathan Davis CD from a board member earlier this year, it turned out to be autographed as well. A nice session.
  22. Now board members will be hoping for a similar ridiculously low price on the Evans Verve boxed set...dream on!
  23. Even if he finds a buyer, ebay could step in and disallow the sale, since they have been requiring that all sellers include Paypal as an option for payment. I think he/she would do better selling them individually, but that is the seller's call.
  24. Holy jeez ! I wonder why the seller felt the need to add "no CDRs?"
  25. We listened to some of it yesterday at my radio station. It was terrible, his voice is shot.
