  1. I really can't imagine what dishes 1 & 2 are and judging from the lurid description I don't want to know but I absolutely love natto. It's indeed semi fermented soy beans but you must mix it with a little hot mustard and a splash of soy sauce, stir briskly until it forms a foamy goo and dollop on top of white rice. It is especially good with nori, which is the dried seaweed used in some kinds of sushi.
  2. Count Basie Clef/Verve Disc 5
  3. No way. The syntax is not in the least Aricesque.
  4. ' Homage' (East-West) is a really great solo set and most highly recommended, if you can find it, which I doubt.
  5. I really like ' Chasin' The Gypsy'. It stands up well to repeat listenings. I can't say I'm as enthusiastic about some of his other cds. 'JC On The The Set' and 'Live At Baker's Lounge' are the two I like best. ' Layin' In The Cut' is very good in parts but shall I say lacking in cohesion.
  6. I've seen pretty big snakes along the pathway by the nearby river, right in the big city. They seem to appear during the late rainy season and early summer.

  8. 'Fingers' is available from HMV Japan http://www.hmv.co.jp/product/detail.asp?sku=388373 The Benny Green you want is on the Somethin' Else label and is extremely rare and oop. I have grave doubts that you'll ever be able to find it on line.
  9. Sky Dive is available from Amazon Japan. http://www.amazon.co.jp/exec/obidos/ASIN/B...4591794-6631412
  10. Thanks for the explanation. I've been wondering why I've been having trouble opening threads. This morning the site was unavailable but I'm pleased you are online again.
  11. A great record, everything by Tadd Dameron is essential listening.
  12. Thanks for the list. I didn't know that I have his entire BN catalogue as leader and band member.
  13. I have 'Mingus At The Bohemia' on a 2 disc 1992 Japanese release, Victor VICJ-40041 & 40042. The track listing is exactly as posted. The catalogue number is slightly different as mine is an earlier version. The one you listed as 40112 is a remastered version as far as I know. The session is a masterpiece in my opinion. I have tons of Mingus but 'Bohemia' is one I go back to again and again. If you want it but can't find it I'm willing to help.
  14. I don't have a wish list. Happily my obsessive cd buying days are over. I used to spend almost all my free time on my bicycle hunting for stuff around the used shops in central Tokyo. That said I'm itching to get the Bear Family 40's & 50's R&B sets !
  15. Must be nice to have handwriting that doesn't suck. The version I'm running didn't come with that feature, and I've never bothered with any of the upgrades I'm afraid. It probably does suck but I can read it. The problem I have is my wife cleans up and the notebook goes missing for days on end.
  16. My software is really simple. A pencil and a little notebook. I used to fret and concern myself about nice covers but have now adopted a less burdensome mindset.
  17. Re: the European Tour recordings. The two volumes on Enja are really great. Mingus In Europe Vol 1 (Enja TKCB-71970) Mingus In Europe Vol 1 (Enja 3077 ) Germany April 26th 1964 Revenge 2 cd set 'The Legendary Paris Concerts' ( Revenge Records 32002 ) Paris April 18th 1964. Charles Mingus Meditations On Integration ( Bandstand BDCD 1524) Scandinavia 1964 ( no further details ) is also great and this time includes Johhny Coles.. The recording quality is less than stellar but the music on this and all the others is absolutely stunning.
  18. Thanks for archiving this and the Big Band site. Your efforts are appreciated. If ever you decide to do an Akiyoshi-Tabackin BB set then I'll be pleased to help out with hard to find items.
  19. Not directly related but there was an article in one of the British newspapers several months ago about John Peel's collection of favourite 45's. I read the list with great interest and eventually managed to scounge a download copy. I wondered if it has since found it's way onto cd in the United Kingdom ? Any information would be most appeciated.
  20. Sad news indeed but not totally unexpected. I've loved his music ever since I first heard him with Mingus. Anyhow he left a fine set of recordings for us and all future jazz fans to enjoy.
  21. Yes, the first Stax-Volt Singles Box ( the black one) is the one to go for, truly magnificent and worth every penny. Otis' 'Remember Me' is a fine set that you might have missed.
  22. Try this for size His debut album is even better but mainly without the stipulated horn section. Ike Turners early stuff is highly recommended, very highly. Also don't forget Sam & Dave, Bobby Bland's stuff on Duke, almost any early period Stax-Volt, Mabel John is an overlooked Stax artist, Little Milton on Chess- he remains one of the greatest stage acts I've ever seen, and of course Otis. That's only skimming the surface.
  23. Did anyone else see the opening episode of 'Thief' ? I half expected some flaky, chummy, caper malarky but was impressed by how quickly it got very seriously interesting, with real acting. I can't wait for more.
  24. I especially like 'Brite Nitegown', even my missus , whos' comments are usually confined to 'TURN IT DOWN' started grooving around the living room.
