PICS of Tyrone Washington -- how many are there?
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Artists
Why don't you contact Barbara Washington Franklin - if she's still alive, that is? Upon discovering her book earlier today (and the Tyrone reference), that thought had crossed my mind. -
PICS of Tyrone Washington -- how many are there?

Thanks Chuck!! Any others, anyone? Searching around on-line, here's a B&W version of the photo from Natural Essence, but without the NE cover typography. Hadn't ever seen it before, and judging from the square cropping of it, I suspect there's a larger and more complete version out there somewhere. also -

PICS of Tyrone Washington -- how many are there?
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Artists
Didn't know that, thanks Chuck. Can anybody provide a scan or pic? -
Thinking of putting together a little Tyrone Washington CD compilation for myself, and wondered what all pics might be out there of the man. I don't own all the BN photography books personally -- I don't suppose there's any with a shutter-date of the infamous "Trainwreck" session by any chance?? (And that date is: August 16, 1968.) (I'm afraid I don't have a scanner either, so if anyone has any TW pics that we can't already find on-line, and if you wouldn't mind scanning an uploading them -- thanks in advance!!) Here's a rare one, to get us started -- the "Jody Grind" quintet... L>R: Tyrone, Woody, Roger Humphries, Larry Ridley and Horace. (source)

I mainly know the (I'm assuming this is the best known individual movement of any of his larger works). If I were to want to dive in and listen to a couple more of his works -- especially full 'symphonies' -- which two (or maybe three) of the ten would you most recommend?? And have any other composers (besides Widor) written "symphonies" for solo organ?? Widor is the only one I know of, offhand, but I'm a little skimpy on my knowledge of classical organ literature.

Hey Paul, were you in the Herd by this point?? I always forget when you started, other than it was sometime in the early 80's (I think).

What's making you smile right now?
Rooster_Ties replied to BeBop's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
One thing (among many) that always makes me smile... Most of the time, when I step out of the shower, dripping wet -- one of our two cats (the little one, who despite being 6+ years old, still looks (and plays) like she's less than a year old), usually bounds into the bathroom, and promptly starts licking the water off my ankles and the tops of my feet. Cracks me up every time. -
Carmell Jones and Randy Weston Selects in "Running Low"
Rooster_Ties replied to Ron S's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I have 'em both, and love 'em both -- but I especially think the Carmell set is really fantastic. All of the sessions on Disc #2 were arranged by Gerald Wilson (two albums worth), mostly material for larger small groups (like 9 musicians). Don't miss out!! -

Interesting they're splitting up "I Might Be Wrong" and "Com Lag" and putting some (all?) of those tracks on the bonus CD's to these last three albums. (Of course, that's only cuz I finally bought "Com Lag" last year, finally.) Haven't even gotten the first three extended versions yet, but eventually I'm sure I'll get 'em all ('cept maybe the very first one).

I find some of the Yo Miles! material -- (as best I recall) particularly their new versions of tunes that were originally only every recorded live by Miles -- to be a little more focused, and/or maybe a little better planned out. In some cases, I think the saxophone work (solos) on the Yo Miles! material is just a wee bit oriented more towards telling a story -- i.e., solos with more of a beginning, middle and end. This is as opposed to some of the original Miles material, where they (whomever was in the sax chair at the time) really just go for broke some or more of the time, and (I think) not always with the very best results (though I am still a fan of nearly all of the pre-retirement Miles electric era). In their defense, though, it's not like Miles' original electric music was the least bit easy to carry off in the first place, especially live (and at those volume levels). And on the last two Yo Miles! releases, I really appreciate the inclusion of sax players like Greg Osby, who are slightly more 'inside' players (tone-wise), while still being just as 'out' harmonically. Not (quite) as much "screaming", I guess, when you get down to it (though there certainly is still some -- just a more moderate dose, me thinks).

Chuck, I'm curious what you think of the Yo Miles! dates. Laying my cards on the table -- in some ways, I think they improve on much the original material.

Charles Tolliver's contribution is not to be missed. (Had a couple people I've loaned this set to, both say Tolliver almost steals the show.)

Word!!

I can't quite offer to 'match' a lot of money, to incent other contributions (much as I might like to)... ...and since I gave $200 last go around -- I'm a little inclined to wait until the next go around before I give again... But, if you all can get to $2,000 (or pretty close), I'll kick in another $100 this go around. Where we at now?? Let's get this thing knocked out, so we don't have to mess with it for another full year (or more). Anybody who's posted 500 times here or more, please do give something -- and every little bit helps. Thanks!!

Composers that don't get the recognition they deserve.
Rooster_Ties replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Artists
Greg Osby (at least for a while there), and Jason Moran. -
The first three that came to mind, that I really think rise to the level of inclusion in this thread... Carla Bley ...and... Ingrid Jensen ...and... Maria Schneider.

While he's probably not underrated around these parts -- in the wider (jazz) world I suspect Herman Blount doesn't get anywhere near the cred as a composer, as he probably should. (Probably didn't help that he was from Saturn.)
