  1. And the Select is the ONLY digital release (yet) of this VERY fine date (one of Patton's very best, IMHO) -- especially for Jimmy Ponder's contribution... THAT CERTAIN FEELING John Patton Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey: March 8, 1968 Junior Cook (ts); John Patton (org); Jimmy Ponder (g); Clifford Jarvis (d). a. (2052) (tk.2) Daddy James (Jimmy Watson) - 6:47 b. (2053) (tk.9) Early A.M. (John Patton) - 7:10 c. (2054) (tk.14) Minor Swing (John Patton) - 6:32 d. (2055) (tk.16) Dirty Fingers (John Patton) - 6:13 e. (2056) (tk.19) I Want To Go Home (John Patton) - 8:28 f. (2057) (tk.23) String Bean (John Patton) - 5:35
  2. Or if it's a tenor player, then more than likely Gary Thomas. Both he and Osby were variously in Jack's band(s) around this time (usually both of them together).
  3. Somebody take a chance on this - you won't be disappointed.
  4. Great disc, great price. And some really fantastic playing from Manfred Schoof!!
  5. Missed this thread the first time, and had to give it a bump. What a read!!

    KD ON Tenor

Wow, now that's a revelation. Never knew that. And while I can't rightly explain why (other than what I perceive to be his unorthodox, yet still fairly "inside"-sounding style and/or technique) -- I'm suddenly moved to ask if Johnny Coles ever played anything else before trumpet?? Seriously.
  7. Wow, if Moran is on the date - I'm totally there.
  8. The most enjoyable Miles book of the several I've read. Szwed's one a hell of a good writer (IMHO).
  9. Somebody around here will probably enjoy this. Free? Found this link in the 'music theory' subreddit (of Reddit), entitled thusly... Can you recognize the many types of trombone?
  10. Ah yes, but it's spelled Hen3ry.
  11. Much of Rabih Abou-Khalil's music seems like a true hybrid between "real" world music, and "real" jazz (or as true as any such hybrid I've ever heard). I have about 6 or 7 of his discs, and can't say enough good things about them.
  12. Yup, my take too. Nice date, several fun tunes.
  13. Call me 'curious'. If no one else here is especially interested, I'd probably love to take a gander at them. And there're at least three board members here in KC, and collectively I'm sure we'd all love to peruse them. FYI, here's (apparently) what all is in them... www.signaltonoisemagazine.org/backissues.html But if anyone else is seriously interested in them, feel free to jump in and scoop them up -- my interest is probably more cursory.
  14. I'll second that! '2000 Miles' is about as close to a modern Christmas classic as they get. How about a Xmas album from David Bowie?? His duet with Bing was da bomb!
  15. Hey Jim, still would love to hear your thoughts on this date. Cheers!! -- Rooster T.
  16. My mom owned a copy of this (cover below), and I've still got it! She got Ellington's autograph back in the day too (which I got as a surprise Xmas gift to me about 10 years ago). And she saw/heard Harry Partch back in the day too -- saw/heard Cage a time or two as well. (The only music my dad ever liked was barbershop quartets, and german polkas.)
  17. Mixed bag, as I recall, both good and not as good. Haven't listened to it in ages, I'll dig it out and report back in a few days.
  18. Wynton Kelly Trio: Live at Left Bank 1967 (with Hank Mobley, no less) Plenty of time for Wynton to solo (two discs), look at these track lengths.... 1 On a Clear Day 15:21 2 Hackensack 15:11 3 On Green Dolphin Street 15:11 4 Milestones 15:46 5 If You Could See Me Now 11:46 6 Speak Low 16:10 I almost like these recordings (with Hank) even more than the two discs of live Wynton Kelly Trio with Joe Henderson that Verve released. And that's really saying something, since I'm such a huge fan of Joe.
  19. This could be nothing but speculation, but FYI, this is a post on the same topic over at the Steve Hoffman forums... source
  20. Well, that' solves that quandary for me. I don't think that's Mosaic's fault, they didn't destroy the masters etc. Oh, I know that. Totally NOT Mosaic's fault; never thought it was.
  21. Thinking about the Lou Donaldson set (6 CD's, damn!), and maybe the Pacific Jazz Piano Trios, but man -- that Lou set really is a big chunk of change right now. I already have almost all of the set I most wanted from those suddenly deleted or barely on life-support, but man, this really sucks. My habit was always to wait until something I really wanted went on the "running low" list -- and then I'd literally buy every damn thing that I had any even half-way serious interest in. That meant about once every three or four years I'd drop over $400 or $500 with them. Buy nothing for years, then go absolutely crazy. (Saved a hell of a lot on shipping that way, probably well over $200 over the last 10 years -- and my wife could weather my mega-spending sprees better when they were spaced out that far apart. I also usually timed my sprees with Mosaic's very infrequent sales too, which helped too.) That said, sets being deleted without any warning at all, damn!
  22. Well, now THAT sucks. Royally.
  23. At some point, please share that list of 20 or 30 names you already have. Would be interesting to see, and discuss. Good luck with your project, and most of all, welcome to the board!
  24. I thought about bidding on this, but got busy with other things and forgot about it. No way I would/could have paid that much for it. Would love to hear it some day (even just once), but I don't need to own it.
