All Night Long (1962) film soundtrack
Rooster_Ties replied to cbrady's topic in Offering and Looking For...
(Supposedly) four used copies on Amazon Germany .com CLICK Again, no idea if any of these are real, but the relatively cheap price on the cheapest available copy might lead one to believe that it could be real. -

(Supposedly) there are are two or three 'used' or 'collectable' copies available from third-party sellers on Amazon France .com CLICK No idea if any of these are real, as it's not unheard of for third-party venders to list things they really don't have (but think they can order). Still, the two used copies are cheap enough that I'm wondering if they might actually really be real. -

All Night Long (1962) film soundtrack

The AMG seems to think it was also released on CD in 1997, supposedly Universal 5529222. Never mind, that seems to be this compilation (same title, but totally unrelated)... -

You might try the Jazz Record Mart (in Chicago). Their on-line system says they have a copy in stock (the CD issue), but I just called the store - and the guy who answered the phone checked the racks and couldn't find it. I mentioned to him that their website seemed to think they had it in stock, and he said something to the effect that they didn't control the website. (?) In any case, you could try ordering it from them (through the web-site), and see what happens. Or else give 'em a call, and then push a little harder on them than I did, or ask 'em what happens if you buy something through the web-site that it turns out they don't really have in stock. In any case... Good luck!! -

Took me a good couple years to really learn to like the "Lift Every Voice" sessions, but frankly -- I could say that about most of Hill's output early on in my listening (anything more than 5 to 8 years ago). Now I think they're really fascinating, and what's not to like about any Hill sessions with either Lee Morgan or Woody Shaw?? Keep listening to them. They'll click eventually for you, I'm guessing. Or not. Either way, these are pretty darn interesting dates, and the vocalists are singing some fairly tricky stuff in my estimation. Anybody know if they vocalists were recorded in real-time with the rest of the band?? I'd be shocked to learn if they were. I'm envisioning the band laying down their tracks first, with the vocalists coming in later (overdub) and doing multiple takes to get their part(s) right -- as tough as their role in the material was. (Or maybe I'm underestimating the vocal group.)

I've always thought the bonus tracks to "Grass Roots" really shine (maybe even more than the originally released session), and I think in large measure because of the inclusion of Ponder, AND how Ponder rises to the occasion with some really 'tart' playing. I'd kill to find some more guitar playing of that sort, in that kind of "off-kilter" context. One of my favorite John Patton BN dates includes Patton as well, "That Certain Feeling" (1968) with Junior Cook and Clifford Jarvis. It's on the Patton Mosaic Select, and is a fantastic date (IMHO). And two other more recent sessions of his that I really like are "Live at the Other End", a live SOLO date from 1982 (I think), with tunes I really like, and some that I suspect you'd almost never hear on solo jazz guitar: Work Song, Jitterbug Waltz, Freedom Jazz Dance(!), Con Alma, Milestones(!), Stella by Starlight, and All the Things You Are. And even more recently, "Somebody's Child" (2007) has an absolutely KILLIN' version of Woody Shaw's "Moontrane", plus "Seven Steps to Heaven", and Pharoah Sanders' "The Creator Has a Master Plan".

FS: Mobley's A Slice Of The Top
Rooster_Ties replied to Soulstation1's topic in Offering and Looking For...
I've long said that Slice Of The Top and Third Season were my two favorite Hank leader-dates -- both dates with somewhat larger groups. -
Well, I'll beg to differ re: Lou Reed. I'm certainly no huge fan of his (never have been), but have always thought pretty highly of "Songs for Drella" (in collaboration with John Cale), which was only 20 years ago. And to say that Zorn is "not a particularly good composer" is to completely ignore the huge body of Masada tunes he wrote. Not every last one is manna from heaven, but I'd put the better half of the Masada catalog up against anybody else's over the same time-frame, purely in terms of "good compositions". (I'm humming half a dozen of those tunes now, as I type this, not having heard any of them in at least 6 months.)

GM to pull the plug on Pontiac
Rooster_Ties replied to BERIGAN's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Ok, I've never seen a modern Pontiac I've ever liked (anything in my adult lifetime). And yes, that means I never particularly liked the Trans-Am or Firebird (at least not from the mid 70's and after). -
So, why in the hell are there so many different covers for these dates?? (And, dare I ask, what really are THE "original" covers for both of these dates??) My copy of Iron Man looks like this... I've meant to pick up Conversations for ages, but just never have gotten around to it.

Sounds good to me. I've never see a Pontiac I've liked (ever!), and I’ve long thought Pontiac commercials were targeted at people with precisely the polar opposite of whatever my tastes were (and are). Case in point -- the ugliest American car of the last 10 (or maybe even 20) years -- the Pontiac Aztek.
