Well, I only watched ONE of them all the way to the end. Does that tell you anything??

You know, the NYT's "Weekender" TV ads are getting more and more tempting all the time. And now (after reading this article, the one starting this thread), I'm suddenly seriously thinking of getting their dead-tree "Weekender" subscription package (Fri, Sat & Sun editions for cheap), almost as a sort of protest against the fall of print journalism. I turn 40 in a couple months, and I only know ONE person under the age of 40 who subscribes to the local paper (Kansas City Star) -- and that person is a friend who has run for political office a couple times. And the place I work is about 60% "under 40" people, and NOT ONE of them subscribes to the paper, nor do many of them ever read ANY of it online either ('cept when their older colleagues send them links to articles). Some times I want to tell them, WTF people??!!!!, do you not give a damn at all about what's going on around us?? (Locally and regionally speaking, that is.) And I work for an Environmental not-for-profit, so I KNOW these people care about the world -- their whole frickin' career is caring about the world around them.

Cuscuna, Lundvall on NPR's "Talk of the Nation"

Depends. Who can still be considered a "current Blue Note artist"?? I'm sure I don't give a damn about the whole roster, but there might be a couple names there I'm still interested in. Is Jason Moran still on the label? -
Erich Kleinschuster & Joe Henderson/Carmell Jones

Got both volumes from Dusty over a year ago, and all four discs (two 2-disc volumes) are really some outstanding material. Expensive, but priceless -- all at the same time. (And if I ever lost 'em, I'd try and replace 'em -- even at $30 a pop.) -
Yeah, no shit. I've never owned a copy, but gave one a spin in a store once. It was triple-whack, and then some.

Worthy of The Onion. Good stuff. -
To witness (since they won't or at least haven't released it)...

Perhaps let's get the band's and/or Jim's buy-in on this first, or at least some sort of strategy for how to approach Bob. (We wouldn't want to do more harm than good.) Not trying to say the idea isn't a good one -- but, rather, that I'm not personally sure of the best way to go about this, and I may not be alone in this position. (I had a letter-writing campaign idea once -- for somebody else's cause here on the board. And when I pitched it publically, I was quickly informed privately by the party I was pitching for -- that I was going about it all the wrong way, and that I was probably doing more harm than good to their cause. I don't know if that's the case here (or not), which is why I'm deferring to the band to weigh in.)

which Mosaic(s) should I get next??
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Also, I realized I already have all of the material on the disc #3 of the Weston -- so I should probably reevaluate that decision too (are the first two discs of the Weston worth $44 to me??). And I should probably re-scrutinize my decisions to get the Hill and Hutcherson. Open to more opinions on both. I'm torn on the Hill. I love "Homage" (which is also Hill solo piano), but I've been a little slower in getting into all the other solo-piano things I have by him. I know, it's Hill, so I'm gonna need it eventually. But it'll be available forever (it'll probably time-out before it sells-out). But it is Hill, and he's on my all-time top-5 favorite artist list. And the Hutcherson has some Woody Shaw on it too -- another "top 5" artist of mine. -
which Mosaic(s) should I get next??
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
OK, the Tyner is officially off the table. I just listened to AMG samples of all five of the tracks (plus one of them, the full tune, can be listened to from the Mosaic site). Nice, but not worth $44 to me right now. The Toshiko is still an open question, and I'm still leaning towards not getting it right now. Anybody wanna convince me otherwise?? -

Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Oh cripes, I had almost convinced myself to wait on the Toshiko for a few more years. If I get the Tyner and Toshiko TOO -- I'm think I'd be up to about $475 (I think that includes shipping). That's just crazy. Anybody know what Mosaic's margin would be on about $460?? Can I somehow justify this as trying to help keep them in business?? -
which Mosaic(s) should I get next??
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
It depends on which 44 minutes we're talking about. Damn you, you know my weaknesses This order is getting stupidly big enough as it is, without me suddenly seriously thinking about the Tyner set too (which I am now, thanks, Dan ). But if you must know.... DISC ONE 6. Planet X (B) 7:37 7. Vibration Blues (C1) 8:43 DISC TWO 1. Song For My Lady (C2) 7:32 2. Cosmos (C2) 9:00 3. Shaken, But Not Forsaken (C2) 11:44 Is this worth $44?? Anybody can chime in... -
which Mosaic(s) should I get next??
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
OK, so if I look at the "shipping costs" angle of this (which is usually where I try to cost-justify the moon! -- in order to save a few dollars on shipping ) -- I can get just the Moncur, Braxton, and the Farmer (single) for slightly less than $200 (plus $14 shipping) -- or $209 total. BUT, if I get EVERYTHING I really want NOW (which would also include the Hill, Hutcherson, Weston, and the Zeitlin (pre-order) -- that would amount to about $175 MORE than just getting the Moncur, Braxton and Farmer. And, (here's where I cost-justify the moon), I'd only pay $2 more in shipping if I got one HUGE order NOW, as opposed to breaking it all up into two orders -- thus saving me $12 in unnecessary shipping costs (i.e. $16 now for everything, vs. $14 now plus $14 later -- assuming I'm going to buy all this stuff eventually anyway). But that makes for one damn big order (almost $400). Youch. Decisions, decisions.... PS: My history with Mosaic is that I'll put off ordering things from them -- sometime for years and YEARS -- until something I want is about to go out of print (or something I REALLY want comes into print). Then I'll buy EVERYTHING they currently have at that time that I think I'll EVER want -- resulting in orders from them that are usually $300 or $400 each. I think the last time I ordered from them I got something like one big box, four selects, plus like 8 Conns (they had some kind of special on Conns then, like they were only $12 each for every $50 you spent on actual Mosaic stuff -- or something like that). It was a HUGE order, something like $400+ easily. -
I've never much liked Red Clay. Haven't listened to it more than half a dozen times total, and as best I can recall -- it was the electric bass playing (something which I very often like on many semi-acoustic sessions from the 70's -- and you all know I love a fair bit from that era) -- it was Carter's e-bass playing that really left me cold on RC. (Though maybe it was Herbie some too -- in any case, something about the rhythm-section on RC really leaves me cold.) Based on the comment that I just quoted above, plus the description of "Straight Life" in the original post that started this thread (essentially that SL is groovier than RC, but also a bit more "out"), I see I need to probably try "Straight Life" sometime. Certainly the bass playing on RC wasn't "inventively" groovy enough, THAT much I do remember. I'll put SL on my 'things to keep an eye out for' list.

which Mosaic(s) should I get next??
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Up for a few more votes. Probably gonna put in my order this week. New info -- I'm about 80% sure I'm gonna order the big ol' Braxton set (though, youch!! -- $$$!!), so that'll reduce the number of Selects I might have otherwise gotten. And as much as I'd like to get the Tyner, I've just looked at the details of the set -- and found that I already have all but a touch less than 45 minutes of this set (all on CD too, no less). So, I'm not sure that 44 minutes is worth $44 to me. -
What the heck are we, anyway?

Damn straight! -
OK, now that I'm seriously considering getting the Braxton Mosaic (I resently found 30-second clips of the whole thing on the AMG, which has nearly sold me), and I want to make sure I come back and print these additonal notes out to keep with the set, which I will (probably) get (probably) soon. Yowza!!

Several come to mind... >> Ornette on Tenor -- nuff said >> Jackie McLean -- Old and New Gospel (with Ornette on trumpet throughout) >> Terence Blanchard -- Romantic Defiance (with Kenny Garrett on tenor(!) throughout) And the one that gave me the idea for this thread (I've not ever heard this one (yet), but if the sales job I just discovered on the TrueBlue website is to be believed)... >> Donald Byrd -- Fuego ("Byrd uses a pocket trumpet for this album, giving him a brighter, more distinctive sound.") How many can we think of?? (That are worth mentioning -- that is. ) To qualify -- said musician has to play ONE instrument on nearly the entire album, and that instrument can't be his or her main axe. (The musician doesn't have to be the leader on the date.)
-
no Ranelin in Lord... Just checked to be sure -- the 2001 CD reissue of "Vibes from the Tribe" does list Kenny Cox on the title track, on electric piano. (That's the only track he's listed on.)
-
I've always loved his two BN dates -- and was thrilled when they came out on CD (something I wasn't sure we'd ever see). Did he ever have any other leader dates?? I'm pretty sure he's on Phil Ranelin's 2nd 'Tribe' leader date, but that's the only thing I thing I've ever seen him on as a sideman. Anything else of note?? Sorry to hear of his passing.

One that comes to mind for me... Steve Coleman -- I think he's really fantastic on all of the Dave Holland's leader-dates (plus "Phase Space" -- which should probably be a co-leader credit to both Coleman and Holland). But I'm a little less enthusiastic about Steve's own leader dates -- which all kinda wear me out. (I respect the hell out of Steve's leader dates (they're incredible!) -- but I can never get through more than 2 or 3 tracks before I want or need to put something else on.) Anyone others come to mind?? Discuss.
