  1. So why do public colleges and universities have the minor league sports teams for football and basketball?? Ain't the case for baseball. Why is that?? Why the difference?? They should just have pro-basketball and pro-football run their own (pro) minor leagues, and let the colleges and universities have true amateur (and amateur-grade) sports systems.
  2. I'm normally a HUGE fan of Harper, and Lee (especially in the late 60's, and what little there is of him in the 70's) -- and I'm a big fan of quite a bit of 70's jazz in general... ...but I have to say that the one time I heard this date, I was pretty nonplussed. -_- Maybe worth $4 or $5, as an impulse buy -- but otherwise, it ain't quite what it looks like on paper.
  3. What's fuckin' nuts is that in several states (Kansas I think is one, and Iowa too -- and probably a dozen or more others) - THE highest paid state employee in the ENTIRE state is the basketball and/or football coaches of one or both of the best state schools/universities. (WAY more than the governor, for instance, like to the tune of 5 or even 10 times what the governor makes.) (And no, I'm not saying pay the governors more.)
  4. What label (or labels) would have some/any claim to this - in terms of the legit release of this material today? (In terms of contracts at the time, and such.) I have to claim complete ignorance of the details of how these things work. Could any label legitimately release this now (assuming all the legal hoops are jumped through correctly), regardless of the "controlling authority" at the time?? Or would Columbia (presumably) have rights to this today??
  5. THAT'S what I was waiting and wanting to hear from somebody. I really need to pick this one up sometime. Miles Ahead is my favorite of all the Miles & Gil colaborations, and it would definitely be interesting to hear another take on that material.
  6. Thank god home prices (or at least some of them) are a little more decent here in Kansas City. A little less than 4 years ago my wife and I paid about $145K for our 3 bedroom, 1½ bath house (a wonderful old church parsonage built in 1922) -- in a great neighborhood (but in "not-such-a-great" school district). And fortunately we were able to put down 20%, so our mortgage was a pretty reasonable $115K (and our 30-year mortgage rate is close to 5%, fixed). But I really feel for people with kids. A similarly sized house in a similarly good neighborhood on the Kansas side of the state line (less than 10 blocks away), will run a good $75K more(!) -- for the very same house!! We don't have kids (and plan NOT to ever have kids), so we definitely had more options. The cost of living is really out of control in bigger cities and on the coasts especially, and the quality of school districts is a BIG factor. A friend of mine recently had to buy a 4-bedroom house a couple years ago (he has three kids), and despite his cheapskate tendencies (he's an even bigger spendthrift than I am!) -- he had to pay close to $240K for a house that really isn't any bigger than mine -- just to get into an at least half-way decent school district. That's almost $100K more than we spent -- for a house hardly any better than ours.
  7. I've always been curious to hear this -- even brought it up in another thread one time. Has anyone here ever heard this before??
  8. I'm quite seriously surprised that, to the best of knowlege, there hasn't ever been any kind of orchestral version of the full Concierto de Aranjuez -- but with trumpet and orchestra, instead of guitar. You know, something with substantially the same parts/arrangement as the orchestral original, but with trumpet instead. Is it a lack of trumpeters that could pull something like this off?? -- is that what accounts for this not having been done before?? It just seems like such a natural -- take Miles' trumpet (or the idea of doing this on trumpet, anyway -- not Miles' specific interpretation), and add it to the original orchestral parts.
  9. I won't dis "Curtis/Live", but I've found I really prefer most of Curtis' solo material in its studio form -- simply because I think the horns, strings and layers of sound really help the material substantially. Don't get me wrong, I'm not tryin' to dis the "live" material -- because that's what makes "Curtis/Live" enjoyable. But I really find I miss all the layers in the arrangements found on the studio sessions -- in whatever "live" Mayfield solo material I've ever heard, from any source.
  10. After we put 20% down on our house, our total mortgage was about equal to what our annual income was at the time (about 5 years ago). Which turned out to be a DAMN good thing -- cuz about two years after we bought our house, I lost my job -- didn't work hardly at all for about 18 months (just some contract work, here and there) -- and I finally moved into doing something completely different in the not-for-profit sector, making only about 40% of what I used to make as an IT business analyst (so a 60% cut in pay). The key is that we have ALWAYS bought way, WAY less than we could afford. Until last year (when we bought a new Prius), my wife and I were both driving 12 and 13 year old cars -- one of which I still drive today (and probably will for another 5 years). We're certainly not rich, but we're also not a 'house-of-cards' just waiting to fall either. If my wife lost her job, and had to take something else for only around 50% of what she makes now -- I think we could still make it (though it would be very tight). And remember, that's after I've already taken over a 50% reduction in pay a couple years ago.
  11. From the first CNN article... / Time for a rewrite, which we may need sooner than we we think... ...and that's why birds do it, bees [used to] do it [back when there still were bees], Even educated fleas do it. Let's do it, let's fall in love.
  12. Still available, after the fact!! Check it out, people.
  13. Ditto here, on both points.
  14. Just a reminder, I've got a fantastic room for you to play in, here in Kansas City. When you get to thinkin' about a trip down this way, talk to me as soon as you can. I would need to book you guys probably a full 3-months in advance of the actual date, since my lead-times on certain press in this town is often that far in advance (the one local jazz rag only publishes every other month). Also, I'm often working a concert or two ahead in my bookings, so let me know WAY early if you even have an inkling of passing through Kansas City. Thanks!!! Sure hoping you guys will get down this way sometime in 2008.
  15. Any notable bonus features?? (Meaning on the DVD.) I did see it in a theatre (and found it to be one of the most interesting and facinating films I'd ever seen).
  16. Anybody die yet??
  17. OK, then, speaking of early Kool & The Gang -- what about, and how about -- Michael Ray?? Man, can that guy blow, or what!! Any of that come out of the soul-review thang and/or the marching band thang?? Now, I have to admit I'm pretty unfamiliar with the soul-review thang, and the marching band thang -- other than what little I think I know about them, which is pretty much based on practically nothin'.
  18. Found this post in another thread... As is the influence of African-American collegiate marching bands on the styles/approaches of the horn sections of THOSE bands. Well???
  19. Oh, don't worry - I gotcha covered there. I'll try to think up some good requests too -- and shout 'em out during the bass solos. So, what can you do with two trombones, that you can't do with one?? Guess I'll find out Monday.
  20. Anybody heard this one before?? I just noticed "Love Drops" was in the list of tunes -- originally off my beloved "Mother Ship". Comments?? Worth seeking out?? Impossible to find?? (Specifically on CD.) Does "Love Drops" bear any resemblance to the original?? Edit: Just stumbled on this thread by accident, by the way.
  21. I see bertrand has done all my homework for me. Thank you!! I know I'd seen those dates specifically listed somewhere.
  22. Anything, by any chance, from the "never-known-to-have-been-recorded" (even live) version of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers?? -- specifically the line-up with both Woody Shaw AND Tyrone Washington?? Would have been from sometime in '69, if I remember correctly. A fairly narrow window -- perhaps as short as a few months. I can provide more exact dates (or a least the window of dates) if that would be helpful. My request is sincere.
