  1. I saw Brock (and Ike Willis too) guesting with the Zappa tribute band Project/Object a couple years ago here in KC, and all involved were pretty close to amazing. Willis is a monster singer ( always has been, in my book), and Brock was impressive too. If this new group comes to town (with Brock primarily on lead vocals), I'll sure try like heck to catch 'em. Should be a good time, all around.
  2. Hmmm... Kansas City. Wonder when, and what venue?? This could be mighty tempting.
  3. Yeah, I took a look at those Youtube clips, and kinda thought the same thing. Never went back and bought it after all, and probably won't.
  4. You're probably just sayin' that, in case you ever happen to end up on a speaking pannel with her sometime.
  5. W. T. F. ????!!!!!!! Ahem... Let me rephrase that... W. T. F. ????????
  6. Maybe Couw can explain that too??
  7. German "Country / New Wave" PS: let it play at least a full minute -- the 'new wave' breakdowns every other 30 seconds or so (throughout the song) are... ...'unique'.
  8. Just saw this in the cut-out rack at a local shiny-disc emporium (while I was out at lunch). For $2 or $3 I wouldn't have thought twice. For $8 - I thought I'd at least check the AMG review, and while I'm at it - here's a thread for others to chime in too. Yngwie Malmsteen - Concerto Suite for Electric Guitar and Orchestra in E Flat Minor Op. 1 <-- FWIW, this AMG review is generally positive (with a number of caveats). I think my wife will get a kick out of this, as she's a bit of a Metallica fan (believe it or not), and weird classical music hybrids can often be fun (IMHO). Found a couple clips on Youtube too... Clip #1: Yngwie Malmsteen - Concerto Suite For Electric Guitar Clip #2: Yngwie Malmsteen - Icarus Dream Fanfare with Orchestra Opinions??
  9. Is it February yet???!!!!!
  10. Yeah, but the post-Vai bands (well, specifically that 1988 band, for the last tour) were fantastic. (And I agree that Zappa in the early 80's was a bit dry.)
  11. This Zappa alum tribute was mighty damn fine, IMHO... Band from Utopia - A Tribute To The Music Of Frank Zappa (Muffin, 1995) Recorded live (in Germany, I think) in 1994 or 1995 (forget the exact date) Chungas Revenge Aint Got No Heart Take Your Clothes Of When You Dance What´s The Ugliest Part Of Your Body Mother People Help I´m A Rock The Eric Dolphy Memorial Barbeque City Of Tiny Lights Pound For A Brown I´m A Beautiful Guy The Bebop Tango Yo Cats Zomby Woof Andy Musicians include: Bruce Fowler, Tom Fowler, Tommy Mars, Ed Mann, Arthur Barrow, Ike Willis ( ), Chad Wackerman, Robert Martin, Kurt McGettrick ( - including best damn contrabass clarinet solo I've ever heard, on the Dolphy Memorial BBQ), and Jay Dittamo. As good as the original - perhaps not quite. Is the glass WAY more than half full -- HELL YEAH!!! A very welcome addition to my Zappa library.
  12. Much love for Tyrone on this board -- and plenty o' topics abound. In short, to the best of my knowledge - Tyrone was the leader on a grand total of three dates that have been released, plus one more infamous one that hasn't (known around here as the "Trainwreck" session). Also, one person here on this very board has heard the "Trainwreck" - and their description of it can be found here and there. Here's a search for you: CLICKY THINGY (Would have done the search on "Tyrone Washington" - but that brings up every topic with either "Tyrone" or "Washington" in the title. Searching just only "Tyrone" only is the next best thing, and nearly every search hit is for Washington.) Also, here's the Tyrone Washington Corner. I think the 'review' of the "Trainwreck" is probably in there.
  13. I had been wondering what price most retailers were selling this set at. Is $98 fairly average?
  14. Yeah, well then . edit: or here either.
  15. PS: Somebody (Chuck, probably) will remind me that maybe Harper doesn't want to be tied down to the limitations that being on a label like BN might necessitate. (And you could be right, Chuck.) But absent a reason like that, seriously folks, why the hell isn't Billy Harper on Blue Note??? Joe Lovano isn't my favorite tenor player ever, but he's great in many respects that are hard to argue with. So then, if Lovano is on BN, why isn't someobody like Billy Harper on Blue Note?? - thereby gaining the notoriety that being on such a label would afford?? (I mention Joe Lovano becuase I suspect that by being on BN, Lovano's name is better known than Harper's -- and maybe by some margin too. Note, I'm NOT arguing that Lovano is incredibly well known (though he always does place VERY high in the jazz mag polls), just better-known.) Maybe if the new Tolliver big band album turns out to be on Blue Note (which I suspect it will, since MC is producing), and with Harper confirmed to be on the Tolliver BB project -- perhaps someday Harper will be on Blue Note (as a leader). Why that hasn't happened already sometime within the last 10 years, I'll never know. (Hell, Billy has Eddie Henderson with him quite a lot, and Eddie's been on BN for at least two runs if I remember right, in the 70's and again in the early 90's.)
  16. Whatever about Suzy Vega signing with BN. What really does bother me is who ISN'T signed to Blue Note (or somebody like Blue Note). How about more people like Billy Harper?? Why isn't someone like THAT on Blue Note (or a label like Blue Note). They could sign Melissa Etheridge, or Joss Stone, or anybody you'd care to name for all I care. (And Norah Jones on BN bothers me not one bit.) It's who they AREN'T signing that bugs me.
  17. Chuck, can I go ahead and pre-order the last one??
  18. And notice (JIM!) how she ISN'T wearing WHITE SOCKS. Amazing!!
  19. I respectfully disagree. Some, but not very much in my estimation.
  20. So that's where The Wiggles got their stage moves! Priceless. Absolutely priceless. Love the lead-singer's moves at about the 2:05 mark.
  21. My wife and I will get to (finally!) pick up our brand new 2006 Prius sometime next week. We've been on the waiting list for it since before Thanksgiving. (Oh, to answer your first question -- "blue". ) This is the very first "new" car I've ever been involved in buying, so I'm pretty darn excited!! The "newest" car I've ever owned dates back to 1992 (which is my current Honda Accord wagon, which I'll be getting rid of soon). We're getting the full tax credit too (something like $3,100, I think), which will start to go down rapidly for Prius purchases starting sometime late this year -- ramping down to zero tax incentive by this time next year (if not sooner). Can't wait for next week to get here!!!
