Terumasa Hino discussion and recommendations...
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Artists
Attention - Attention!! - Attention!! - Attention!! - Attention!! Anyone and everyone here with any interest in Hino, and/or any interest in Miles circa 1968-1971... you NEED to get this date, ASAP. This date TOTALLY and utterly kicks ass ( !!!!!) -- and after well over a dozen spins -- it is still freaking me out a bit ( ). Here's why... "Hi-Nology" was recorded on July 31st, 1969 (except for the two bonus tracks, recorded in September 1969). So this thing definitely pre-dates the release of "Bitches Brew" by some margin (many months - I forget the exact release date of BB), and it is completely contemporaneous with and/or even slightly pre-dates Miles' earliest live performances of most of the "Bitches Brew" material (which Miles didn't really perform much of until early in the Summer of 1969, if I remember right). So, to my ears anyway, in many ways... Hino's "Hi-Nology" is to "Miles in the Sky" and/or "Fille de Kilimanjaro"... ...what the two Kenny Cox BN dates are to "Nefertiti" and/or "Sorcerer" ...in other words, nearly contemporary reactions to what Miles was doing 1) in 1968 ("Hi-Nology" was recorded but one year later), and 2) in 1967 (the first Kenny Cox date was recorded in 1968). So, here's what's crazy about "Hi-Nology". Sometimes I think I can hear some of what Miles was doing, trumpet-wise (rhythmically, especially), in 1970 or later -- in Hino's playing on this July 1969 recording. If somebody told me this thing was recorded in mid-1970, I wouldn't blink. But, man, is there any chance (even slight), that Hino somehow took what Miles was doing in 1968 (or really early 1969), and took it just a bit farther -- and somehow took it a bit into Miles "future" territory, meaning what Miles was doing in late 1969 (Bitches Brew), 1970 (Jack Johnson), 1971 (etc...), maybe even 1972?? Everybody here needs to get this thing (if you don't already have it), and Jim Sangry -- that means you too. I really want to hear your thoughts on this date, Jim. I don't suppose you already have one, by any chance, do you?? -
A helpful forum member has posted the lineup in this post already. Sorry, Rooster! At least I didn't ask how it compared to "San Francisco" --- again.

If I might ask, what is the complete line-up on "The Peace-Maker"?? (And thanks in advance!!)

And speaking of Strata East, I also picked up what is maybe THE best post-1970 straight-ahead solo piano date I've EVER heard. John Hicks - solo piano "Steadfast" (Strata East, recorded May 21st, 1975).

Cecil McBee's "Mutima" lp is something of a mixed bag. A long arco bass duet with McBee overdubbing, a sprited freeish piece, a Pharoah Sanders like number with tinkling percussion, a groovier cut with McBee Jnr on electric bass and two short pieces, presumably the openings to longer works. I just picked up Mutima, and I have to say the glass is definitely half full (or more). Yeah, the 11-minute arco bass duet for one is a bit much, but everything else is top-drawer Strata East material in my book. George Adams is everything you'd expect ( ), and the obscure trumpeter (Tex Allen) is a REALLY fine inside/outside kind of player, with some serious chops (at least back then). Maybe not THE best Strata East date ever, but for those that like Strata East -- I'd say it's among the best, or very much in the same ballpark.

Not too often that the audio of TV appearances get any kind of official release, even if only as material on a bonus disc. Frankly, I'm having a tough time thinking of too many others. Maybe a few couple promo-only Brad Mehlau things from some radio appearances (pressed on promo-only legit silver CD's), but those weren't ever commercially available. (And the Mehldau things were radio things, not TV.) Can anybody else think of any jazz TV appearances/performances that have appeared legitimately on a commercial release??

New National Recording Registry just announced
Rooster_Ties replied to Brandon Burke's topic in Miscellaneous Music
from link just provided... "The Library will also announce the discovery and preservation of a previously unknown recording of one of the world’s most celebrated jazz instrumentalists." So, what/who was it??? -
Yes, officially released in Japan on Sony in 1993 -- in addition to one or two non-legit versions since. (Mine is legit. )

I was just spinning the live "Blow Up" date just mentioned, and I just noticed on the first track ("Spiral"), that Cowell quotes Wayne Shorter's "Mescalero" in his solo (at time index 9:54, on the JMY issued version). Now I'm not seeing it at all. Here's another copy that doesn't require hot-linking.

Hutcherson Land Quintet - "Blow Up" JMY 1005-2 (Italy, 1990) Hutcherson, Land, Stanley Cowell, Reggie Johnson, Joe Chambers Spiral - 13:30 Blow Up - 14:20 Herzog - 14:15 Maiden Voyage - 11:40 Man on Mercury - 1:40 Juan le Pins, July 25th, 1969 Sound quality is very good. Long out of print, and never a legit release to begin with. The track times above are from the CD case, and vary slightly from the actual track times (which include a few extra seconds for applause, and maybe a stage announcement). I had this one many years ago (purchased in the mid 90's). I loaned it out (I guess), and never saw it again (no idea who I loaned it to). Found another one on eBay about 4 years ago, so it's worth keeping your eyes out for. Edit: supposedly recorded on the same date (and at the same location) as this... details

On tenor or soprano, I've always thought Wayne played like there were about 14 "nearly half steps" in any given octave. Not a complaint, but simply an observation. Much love for Wayne here!

The Long-Distance Journey
Rooster_Ties replied to Christiern's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Terribly depressing. I don't blame McDonalds (or for that matter, Wal*mart) directly for this kind of thinking -- that "every second counts" -- but this certainly is indicative of the kind of competitiveness that McDonald's and Wal*mart's kind of thinking leads too. (And yes, I realize that they didn't invent this kind of thing either.) -
Tyrone Washington -- "Do Right" (circa 1974)
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Re-issues
FWIW, I pulled the trigger on my Dusty order today, and I got "Do Right". It'll be here within a week. I'll regret the $25 spent (a little), but I'm betting I would have REALLY regretted it if I had not gotten one when I had the chance. It'll be a fun to play for my jazz buddies that already think I'm wacked in the head about liking strange jazz . -
favorite remakes of tunes first or best known on BN
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I did not mean to attack the thread topic - sorry Rooster. I jumped in right away and had second thoughts later. That's OK, Chuck. Over time, I'm even starting to get used to it. ( ) -
Thanks for bringing back a great memory, Joe. I was at this gig too (years before you and I met).

Good question about the the O getting credit on book sales (through Amazon). Another observation -- there appear to be three choices in the drop-down list for where to perform the search... 1) [blank] 2) CD Universe 3) Amazon.com Although Amazon appears to be the default. (It's the 'blank' that I'm pointing out.) -
Would you care to elaborate on this, Allen? I'm not looking to point the finger (and no names need be mentioned), but I'm currious about "good" vs. "bad" management issues, relative to Jackie -- or artists similarly managed poorly. Was it simply an unwillingness to negotiate, and take lesser-paying gigs here and there, enough to justify a string of dates that would form a real "tour" (and thus the possibility of reduced expenses from driving/bussing from city to city) -- rather than just a series of one-off dates (which would presumably require airline costs)?? Did Jackie not have enough frequenty of gigs to justify having a working band? Or did he have to fly in his working band from all over the place, because they all had gigs elsewhere - because they had to eat, make rent, etc... Maybe those were some of the issues, maybe not -- I'm just totally speculating. Even speculation on the subject, Allen, from your perspective (or anyone elses) would be welcome.

Boy I'm gonna get picky now -- and Jim, just tell me to shove off if you've had enough of my type... That said, any chance the search function could default to CD Universe, instead of Amazon?? If I recall, there were quite a few more requests for CDU when the option was to add just one. Happy to shut my trap about it too - just say the word. -
favorite remakes of tunes first or best known on BN
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Go with whacha know, I always say. -
Let's get this whole album out of the way, right up front... New Directions (Osby, Shim, Harris, Moran, Mateen, and Waits) -- nearly all remakes of classic BN-era tunes: Blow Up, Sidewinder, Ping Pong, Beatrice, No Room For Squares, Song For My Father, Tom Thumb, Big Bertha, and Recorda Me. Another favorite (that slightly predates the best known version on BN), is from this... Bobby Timmons with Wayne Shorter, Ron Carter, and Jimmy Cobb -- doing Wayne's "Tom Thumb" I've got plenty more favorites, but I'll post more later...
-
If you ask me this week, I'd probably rank 'em thusly... 1. 65-68, 2nd Quintet 2. Jack Johnson Complete 3. Miles & Gil 4. IaSW Complete 5. Miles & Trane 6. Seven Steps (haven't actually gotten this box yet, but I know most of the material) 7. Bitches Brew Complete. I'm not including the Cellar Door, cuz it's more like the Plugged Nickel (all live) -- instead of everything else nearly all being almost all studio material. (Apples and oranges.)

2006: The Tax Man Wants All Your $$$$$
Rooster_Ties replied to Soulstation1's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Got ours done in the Rooster household about 4 or 5 weeks ago. Got our refunds (federal and state) in something like 8 days (Federal), and some crazy quick turnaround (3 days? - less than 72 hours?) for the state refund. Still can't believe that one. Turbo Tax makes doing taxes a hell of a lot easier than in years past (I think this is the third year we've used Turbo Tax). Well, that and the fact my wife does all our taxes, and she's 1000 times more organized than I am, in terms of keeping things and filing them in ways that actually allow for finding them again when you need them. I think she spent 2 hours doing our taxes, and then we both spent another hour about a week later double-checking everying together. I really HATE doing taxes (or anything involving forms), so the fact she does them is a blessing. -
The Bastards™ have a wonderful/evil tracking system for "want lists" -- which is VERY useful/dangerous for tracking the kind of obscure stuff they carry (most of which is so obscure that it can't be tracked in other places, like half.com want-lists). You can track in-stock and out-of-stock items, and it even lets you prioritize stuff. Highly recommended and/or consider yourself warned.
