  1. So what are all the albums that I'd need to get in order to have all the material in the Art Blakey box?? If I'm not mistaken, all (or nearly all) of them are or were recently available domestically, correct?
  2. Another one that's relatively easy to get are all the Don Cherry BN recordings (all three). As a result, I recently traded my 2-disc Cherry Mosaic (the first Mosaic I ever bought, I might add), in exchange for a brand new 4-disc Byrd/Adams set - just a few days before the Byrd/Adams went OOP (a pretty good trade up, me thought).
  3. Tina Brooks and Herbie Nichols. As an added bonus, one of the Tina Brooks Conns has one or two bonus tracks that were discovered after the Mosaic was released -- so the Conns are the only way to go to get his complete BN leader output.
  4. McMaster's remastering hasn't bothered me on releases since the mid 90's. The only McMasters I've ever had much of a problem with are the late 80's issues (yuck), and maybe a few from the early 90's.
  5. No idea the answer to your question, but the ordering info on the Black Jazz website says... Black Jazz Records™ accepts Checks Credit Cards and Money Orders. To assure the highest protection for purchases Black Jazz secures all Credit Card orders via Pay Pal. You can also phone in your order. (510) 452-5299 All Checks & Money Orders payable to: Black Jazz Records® P.O, Box 71204 Oakland, CA 94612-7304 My thought is that if they take credit card orders over the phone, then that implies (at least to me) that they might be able to run your card directly (without having to go through Paypal). But Paypal appears to be their only on-line credit card payment method. When/if I put an order in with them - I'll let you know what I use. My Paypal spending limit is dangerously low (I think barely $60), because I refuse to give them my bank account numbers. So I'm sure I'll be looking for some alternative to Paypal.
  6. Billy Harper!! Sure wish I could be there.
  7. I mostly can't stand The Today Show, and I pretty much never watch the CBS Evening News. So this change is one I'll never even notice, for all practical purposes.
  8. So akanalog, just to confirm, you got the Black Jazz disks direct from Black Jazz (http://www.blackjazz.com), probably paying through Paypal (that seems to be their only payment method for on-line transactions, unless you call them and place an order that way). And, also to confirm, their shipping charges really are sometime like $2.00 total (not $2 per disc) for the first three(?) discs. nd shipping appears to go up to $5.00 total for four(?) discs or more (up to some limit that I'm not going to worry about now). I've been wanting to place a good-sized Black Jazz order (probably for myself, and few local buddies too), but really wanted to get some feedback from somebody (here, or anywhere) that they really were active, and fulfilling orders in a real and timely way, etc... I was wanting to order enough (maybe 5 discs or more, maybe even closer to 10), that I wanted to make sure they were legit and active before I dropped that much with them. Thanks!!
  9. That is singularly THE most fucking outrageous collar I've EVER seen on ANY shirt (or could have ever seen -- in a THOUSAND lifetimes). I mean, that's like 5 times wider/bigger/pointier/more-dangerous than ANY collar, in any bad 70's movie, or any Salvation Army store, or any bad 70's-themed Halloween party.
  10. What? Your link just goes here... http://www.comcast.net/news/national/index.jsp?cat=DOMESTIC
  11. Must be nice to have handwriting that doesn't suck. The version I'm running didn't come with that feature, and I've never bothered with any of the upgrades I'm afraid.
  12. I could have sworn that it used to be that when you edited a post in the middle or at the end of a thread, the board would return you to that same post (the one you were just editing), when it redisplayed the thread (meaning right after you hit the "Submit Modified Post" button). Now when you edit something, it redisplays the thread starting with the very first post in the thread. Kinda hard to see exactly how the edits turned out "for real". Don't know when this change happened, but it was within the last couple months at most. Is this something that is tweakable with board settings (either at the user level, or at an entire board level)?? - or just a change I/we have to learn to live with?? Thanks!! -- Rooster T.
  13. Not quite the same thing, but from another thread - this worth another mention...
  14. Well, why didn't you just say that before?? I guess I've got myself mostly convinced to get it.
  15. Speaking of which... $99.99, $129.99, $144.00, $144.95. Chinatown (Original Soundtrack) at half.com Ain't no better at Amazon's used marketplace -- $95 to $200 there too (CLICK) WTF??
  16. So, did any major on-line news outlet (other than one associated with a newspaper) ever have a story on this?? I kept checking CNN.com and ABCnews.com, and never saw anything. Was there at least something on NPR?? I mean, THAT'S the first major media outlet I'd expect to cover such a thing.
  17. 'tis true. And it may just be that very enthusiasm that has me so torn. I mean, if it were just bad vocals -- I'd hate the date, and be done with it. But I have NEVER heard anyone sell something (and something so god damn awful) as utterly convincingly as Tyrone does here. THAT'S probably what's got me so conflicted. For those of you that don't know the back story of my prior relationship with "Do Right" -- after I first discovered the thing on eBay about 6 years ago (and then seeing copies of it go for $100 or more in something like three different auctions over two years) -- about 4 or 5 years ago I finally won a copy of my own for about $50 or $60. Sangry first mentioned it years ago on the old BNBB, saying he only vaguely remembered maybe just once seeing some mysterious third Tyrone leader date. And he wasn’t even sure it ever really existed, or if he was just dreaming it. But I didn't fall in love with it at first spin. It just didn't seem anything like what a real Tyrone Washington album ought to be (like "Natural Essence" or "Roots"). So I decided to live with a burn of it – and I promptly sent my LP of it to Sangry about a week after I first got it (totally free of charge too, I might add). As much as I loved Tyrone, I figured Sangry loved Tyrone even more than I did - and probably more than anyone I'd ever know. (I still wanted it, sure -- but I figured Jim NEEDED it.) I've only spun my burn of "Do Right" about once a year since then, but I still failed to connect with it very deeply. BUT, in trying to decide whether to drop $25 more on it (on CD - which I really prefer over LP's, by the way), I've spun the thing like 20 or 30 times since I first started this thread. And damn, if it isn't finally starting to grow on me. And, weird as it is, I think it does somehow fit in the Tyrone cannon. I could never explain it (or at least not as well as Jim probably can), but there is some really freaky kind of conceptual continuity to all of Tyrone’s work –- and yes, even "Do Right".
  18. Fuck yeah!! I'd pay $25 for THAT date in a heartbeat. If anybody reads this thread a few years from now, and "Roots" has since been released on CD - get that MF as quick as you can. It's a monster!!!
