I may have some huge, gaping holes in my collection... But if nothing else, I do have a near complete Tyrone Washington collection (both as a leader and sideman).
-
No Keith Jarrett for me either. (Like I said before, I don't own any "vocalist" leader dates.)
-
Hardly any big band stuff, except I have quite a bit of Gil Evans, and I DO own the Gerald Wilson Mosaic ( ) (Which for me is really saying something, since for years the Gerald Wilson was the only non-BN Mosaic I owned -- well, other than the Woody Shaw).
-
Almost no Mingus (none before Spontoonious made me buy Changes 1 & 2 a few months ago, when we discovered them cheap ($6 each) out used disc hunting). Very little Monk (two leader dates, if I recall -- OK, three since the newly discovered Monk/Trane thing came out). The only two Parker recordings I own are Massey Hall, and the recently discovered Diz & Bird at Town Hall thing (which is really fantastic). Barely half a dozen Coltrane discs total ( ), and yet I have nearly every leader date that Joe Henderson ever did (probably 25 or more), plus probably 70% of Joe's sideman work. Very, very, very little of any jazz recorded before about 1955 or so. No Count Basie. Not much Ellington, though I do have almost all of his piano trio recordings for some reason. No vocalist-lead dates of any sort, and next to none with vocalists as sidemen/women (with some exceptions for some weird stuff from the 70's and very late 60's). There are LOTS of holes in my collection (includeding some REALLY big names), and then some more obscure names I have nearly complete collections for. Go figure.

FS Carmell Jones Mosaic Select
Rooster_Ties replied to connoisseur series500's topic in Offering and Looking For...
I think a buddy of mine here in KC would be interested at that price. Just tried to give him a call, but his line was busy. Anybody else feel free to jump in, but absent any other takers - I think I might have found a home for this thing. I'll try to find out yet this afternoon, or tonight. (Would've bought it myself, 'cept I just bought it as part of a big Mosaic order back in late January.) -

another quick thing... Don't forget to change the CDU links on the Root Doctor and Organissimo pages (meaning the band sites), so those generate a little for you guys too. Like here: http://www.rootdoctorband.com/music.html and... oh, I see you've already fixed it on the main Organissimo band page. No CDU links that I could see on the "Big O" records page (all CDBaby links, that I could see). Edit: Found another CDU link here: http://www.rootdoctorband.com/index2.htm -

Sounds great, but really, Jim -- you shouldn't feel like you have to go to much extra work just on our account, to please everybody. I'm sure we'll ALL be pretty happy with whatever format you want. (Or, since the poll is split, then do which ever one you like better.) Doubling the number of skins only doubles the amount of maintenance when you add other things later. (Or so I noticed, in terms of there currently being no "Today's Active Topics" link at the bottom of the test skin you currently have. Probably lots of other custom stuff missing too from the test skin.) SO, if lots of links and other things are "skin-specific", I'd just pick one CDU link format/placement, and make them all consistent (across the four skins you already have). (cuz maintenance on 8 skins is a hell of a lot more than just fixing 4.) Another unsolicited opinion, like usual. -
tempting... very tempting.....

I think it looks much less cluttered in the top right, on the same level as the Big O logo. Doesn't have to have its own separate box either that way (or a separate color for the separate box). "Unobtrusive" is the aesthetic I'm looking for. Would've voted twice if the software had let me. Might re-register with my work e-mail address, just to vote again. PS: How about moving it down slightly (within the top, meaning the full-width box with the Big O logo), and move it to the lighter colored part of the top. Would make the darker text slightly more visible - more contrast that way. Maybe put it more at the level (vertically) as the word "forums" in the logo. -

VERY cool!! And heck, I just discovered that CDU's price on something as obscure as Tyrone Washington's "Do Right" is only $0.80 more than Dusty Groove wants for it. By the way, how much does the board get on each CDU sale?? Some simple straight percentage?? Or a flat fee per disc?? Or some combo of both?? -

"No honey, I'm not really buying more music again. I'm just trying to support the organissimo forums!!" -
I buy from The Bastards™ all the damn time. But I really doubt they have any kind of pay-back/referal program (or if they did, that'd be news to me).
-
I think it would depend on how many people here bought titles from Amazon all that often. I may well be in the minority here, but I rarely buy CD's from Amazon, as I can usually find cheaper prices elsewhere. Isn't there some sort of similar pay-back referal program with CDUniverse? My general sense is that maybe more people here buy from them (CDU) than they do from Amazon, but I might be all wet behind the ears on both counts. Not that I don't think the idea is good - I just think it might warrent a poll or something to see where people are actually buying stuff online - when they buy brand new titles. (Or at least among places/sites that offer some sort of small pay-back per disc for referals.)

Overdubbing, how prevalent is it in jazz?
Rooster_Ties replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Miscellaneous Music
FWIW, Greg Osby has overdubbed some extra sax parts on one or two of his more recent releases (a couple of the last two with Jason Moran). He's the only sax player listed on the date, but there are clearly two or three lines going on at the same time on one or two tunes. Kinda cool, actually, although my brain always says to me "hey, wait, that can't be happening in real time!!" - when ever I hear it. -
I've occasionally seen listed on eBay 30-40 minutes of video of a Blakey date with Lee and John Gilmore. Is THIS footage from that date with Gilmore?? (Hard to tell from the clip, but I see nothing that indicates that it COULDN'T be Gilmore.) How is this date?? - both performance-wise?? -- and video-quality wise (assuming the typical version that's floating around)? Is this date only available through gray-market channels?? -- or is there a comercial release of it out there somewhere?? (meaning a legit copy).

Don't delete the thread!! We need to be reminded that there is a cost to keeping this forum. Amen to that. Don't you dare delete this thread, Jim. I've mostly been just lurking off and on for going on a month or so -- but I saw this thread earlier today, and immediately gave enough to cover 10 people at $5 each (since I hadn't given in a while). This place ain't free to keep running, and Jim's time alone to keep the place up and running is MORE than worth the value of my contribution --- let alone his out-of-pocket expenses associated with paying for the "utilities" (which are now $1,800 per year, I might remind people). In that context, my $50 was mearly a drop in the bucket. Thanks for starting this thread Jim.

BFT#25, disc #2 answers will be posted in a couple days
Rooster_Ties replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Blindfold Test
I figured that was already a given. I'll get to it when I get to it. God forbid I make any attempt to set a deadline on anything, cuz I know there'll be people hounding me when I don't hit it. And with everything I've had going on in my life, you'd be missing deadlines too. (I'm lucking I'm getting most of the more important ones, like those related to my job, and school, and all the volunteer organizations I'm involved with.) For instance, this past week alone I was up until 2am three or four nights this past week, working on a project for a fundraising/development class that I'm taking through the Midwest Center for Not-For-Profit Leadership (at UMKC). And I had half of a mega-boring, totally dry 600 page text book to read on top of that, for a test today (on the theory of not-for-profit fundraising). ZZZzzz..... I'll post the stuff when I can, and I'll know better than to have anything to do with BFT's ever again. -
Word. AMG says it's been on CD at least 4 different times. (no year given) CD Epic EK-30986 1971 LP Epic 30986 1995 CD Columbia 4670632 1990 CD Epic 30986 CS Epic PET-30986 1987 EPIC/ Legacy 0986 2006 CD Sony International 505066 Does it matter which version I pick up?? I'm not a freak about getting THE very best sound, but are there any issues of this on CD that are to be avoided??

Really? I would have guessed a list price of more like $14 or $15, or at the very least - $13. In any case, I'm not gonna dicker over a couple bucks for one or two titles that might have somehow been released cheaper elsewhere. What matters is that Mosaic has found another way to get more cool stuff out (and hopefully better keep themselves afloat), even if each and every title (or its price) isn't precisely the bee's knees.

I never miss the Grammys -- but I almost always tape 'em, and play it back later. ZAP - and suddenly a 3½ hour show turns into less than one hour of actual viewing time. Some years I could easily skim through the whole thing in like 40 minutes. I will say this - one of the best things this year was Helter Skelter. Paul did it at Live8 - and it really does work pretty well. As I told my wife: among all the things McCartney could have done, that was certainly the coolest thing he could have chosen. That said -- like everyone else here, I thought this year was pretty snoozy. Somebody drag up the thread for last year's Grammys. I seem to remember they were a bit better than some other recent years. Not this year, though. No way.

How about a fast-foot place with nothing but healthy and/or at least "mostly healthy" choices?? You know, where you could pick anything on the menu - and not go wrong?? I'm serious. Seems like there'd be a serious marketshare for that sort of thing. No, not EVERYBODY is gonna do the healthy thing. But I'm guessing there's LOTS that would -- a good 30% of the marketplace, at least (and that's a hell of a lot of people) Wouldn't it be great to go somewhere where the food was great, and nothing on the menu was bad for you?? (I know, pipe dreams)

Can anyone discern any patterns to what they've chosen for the first six discs in this series?? I mean, its inevitable that we'll all start speculating about what "singles" they should do next -- and it'd be good to know what MC and Co are thinking - in terms of the scope and nature of the series.
