    PRINCE

Only caught the first tune so far (still have the whole thing on tape though). Compared to 99% of what you normally see on SNL -- last night it was pretty slammin'. Not precisely my cup of tea, but way more so than not. I went through a sort of Prince phase a bunch of years ago, probably circa 1992-94. Still have some bootlegs to prove it. Sure, not everything he's ever done has worked -- but at least he's (mostly) still tryin'. And I'll take anybody who isn't afraid to try new things (and/or weird old things) -- and strike out swingin' sometimes (even a bunch of times) --- over people who just stay with the same ol' formula for the sake of sales and/or radio-play. Long live Prince. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt practically every time.
  2. Must confess, I've never heard any other jazz violinists live in person before (other than her a bunch of years ago). Yes, that means (totally hangs head in shame ), I never caught Fiddler Williams live - though I probably had the chance on a number of ocasions (if I had made the effort). Sounds like maybe she's still not ready for prime time.
  3. Regina Carter is performing here in Kansas City next month, and I'm curious what people here think of her? I don't have tickets yet (but could maybe get me some cheap). I saw her once or twice(?) live (I forget which) -- but quite some time ago (circa 1998? maybe '99 - whenever the last Kansas City International Jazz Fest was - I forget the year). I distinctly remember seeing her as an unbilled sideperson (sidewoman?) - can I just say sideman? - with Steve Turre's group. I may have seen her as a headliner too, but maybe I'm remembering wrong (only the Turre gig sticks in my mind). Anyway, back then she seemed "good", but not quite ready for prime time - if you know what I mean. In some ways, she seemed like someone with potential, who was probably thrust into the spotlight before her time - simply because she was marketable (not that "marketable" is always a bad thing - though it often is). Opinions? Should I go? - or save my cowrie shells? (I've borrowed a disc or two of hers over the years, but she's not enough my thing to have bought any.)

    PRINCE

Missed all of it, but I've got it on tape for later viewing tonight probably. Fell asleep less than two sketches after the monologue.
  5. Good listening, man. Is the album even in print anymore? I sure as heck don't think so. I thought I had almost everything Tolliver ever recorded - both leader dates, and as a sideman. This enja thing hardly comes up anywhere, not even in most Tolliver discographies. Best I can tell, it's never been on CD. Long out of print, unless I'm totally mistaken.
  6. I just skimmed a couple articles quicky, and I'm impressed. I'll be back for more, for sure!! Everybody, check this one out.
  7. Happy to report that I just won a copy of the enja "Impact" on eBay. I was the only(!) bidder, and got it for only $10 (plus $5 shipping). Can't wait to hear it. I've got the Tolliver Select ordered and on its way too. Saw the Downbeat article too. Hope that big-band of his records, and soon!! DAMN, I really wanna hear them.
  8. Great idea!! BUT, is there any precident for releasing a date as a Conn, that had previously been released (in the U.S.) as a McMaster?? I didn't think there'd been any dates like that, but there might have been one or two (at most). Anybody know??
  9. Don't know about the "new" Japanese reissues, but I'm pretty sure the older Japanese issues of at least Agartha (both CD and perhaps even Japanese vinyl), were longer - unedited versions. Don't know about Pangaea, but somebody here (Undergroundagent?) went nuts when I offered my Japanese Agartha CD's for sale 3 or 4 years ago -- specifically because of the longer material.
  10. Word. Double Word.
  11. yeah right can we hold you to that? Maybe. And by that, I mean maybe YES. Part of the reason I bought so much this time around is that I'd only bought one thing from Mosaic for the last 3 or even closer to 4 years (the Andrew Hill Select, my first pre-order). It wasn't that I have such great self control (I certainly don't). It was purely because I didn't have the income to really justify being able to buy as much music as I had in previous years. But now I've got a new job again (starting late last Summer), and with the combined "sale" thru Feb, and "price increase" in July -- I quickly became a "motivated buyer"!! (Well, I guess the other half-an-exception was getting the Byrd/Adams set right before it went OOP - but I traded my Don Cherry set to someone else on the board, and they bought me the Byrd/Adams -- so in a way, that doesn't count, since I didn't pay for it.)
  12. Boring. Yup!!! They're not automatics, are they? Yup, all of them are automatic -- why??
  13. Oh shit, I forgot Woody was on there. DAMN!!!
  14. Any other totally unreleased dates worth asking about?? I know there's a Jackie McLean lead date with Tyrone on it, but Jackie won't let it out (I think cuz of the drummer, who really didn't click - if I remember). I've got the complete BN discography, and I'll look up the details later tonight - unless somebody beats me to it. Anything else?? Now that all the Hill material is out (which I STILL can't believe sometimes ), there's really not a whole lot else left in the vaults. Which is another reason I think we have a real shot at getting some of that "trainwreck" out.
  15. My wheels: dark blue '92 Honda Accord wagon(!) -- but I'm gonna trade it in on a new Prius come June or July, though. My wife's car: maroon '93 Accord sedan (2-door). She gets the Prius, and I get her car -- which is fine, cuz I can walk or bike to work quite a few days of the week (whether permitting). And she has a little longer commute than I do (though she takes the bus a couple days a week too, when she can). edit: I love my wagon too, and wish we could keep it -- but it's burnin' oil, a good two quarts every 3,000 miles. My wife's car still runs like a top. Both have been GREAT cars, each with about 150,000 miles on them. I hope my wife's car (soon to be mine) lasts another 5 or 10 years.
  16. While at the same time, XM also defended their right to have allowed the full line-up to have been announced "on the air".
  17. Dear lord, Joe Henderson's POWER TO THE PEOPLE desparately needs to be issued for the very first time (domestically) as a release of its own. It's a crime it's never been issued by itself, all these years. IMHO, it's Joe's single best non-BN leader date. (Edit: I understand Power To The People was issued as a single disc in Italy (I think), in a mini-LP style format. I think this is the only release it's ever seen on CD, in all these years.)
  18. I thought it seemed chilly in here.
  19. I agree - and I really hope they can either do a 2 CD set (a "two-fer"), or else some minor edit to fit both dates on one disc (I know some hate this idea, but I'm OK with it). My concern is that If we only get ONE of the dates as a single disc, then we'll NEVER see the 2nd one. Sales for the first one won't justify releasing the 2nd one. Gotta be a two-fer, and get both of them out of the way at the SAME time -- the way I see it.
  20. IMHO, the Dizzy Reece and Elvin Jones ideas aren't gonna fly right now. Both of those dates are currently still in print as part of the Reece Select, and Jones full-size box. Singles from those sets ain't gonna happen while the larger sets are still in print. The Creeper -- yeah, that's the one. VERY interesting day, but I'm not entirely sure it totally works. (That's not a huge slam - The Creeper is probably my favorite date on the entire Byrd/Adams box, cuz my tastes lean more towards late 60's material, even if the earlier stuff "works" better.) Maybe, since the Byrd/Adams box is OOP -- but it just went out of print like yesterday, so I really don't think anything in that set is up for consideration. Same thing with the Blue Mitchell material, though it's been OOP a little longer.
  21. Whether I had enough real info to come to that same conclusion or not, that was my 15-second take on the book too. All I remember thinking was "Road Manager??"
